csa to test ballast-Water systemsCanadian shipowners are searching for practical ballast-water management systems with the help of an Ame-rican testing facility. The Canadian Shipowners Association (CSA) has partnered with the Great Ships Initiative (GSI) to test ballast-water management systems in the cold, fresh waters of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway (GLSLW). «Our membership has a track record of leading the use of innovative technologies and best management prac-tices to improve performance and safety and to protect the environment,» said Robert Lewis-Manning, CSA’s president. «Our partnership with GSI is important because it builds on our industry’s leadership and demons-trates the commitment of CSA members to find solutions that are practical, work in our unique operating environ-ment, and achieve the necessary results in a cost-effective manner.»The majority of tests will be carried out at the GSI ballast treatment facility in Superior, Wisconsin. The govern-ment-funded facility is a project of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, a regional non-profit research centre based in Washington, D.C. The results of the testing are expected by the end of August. No new invasive species have been detected in the GLSLW or Canadian territorial waters since Canada and the United States jointly began to require ships to conduct mid-ocean ballast-water exchanges in 2006.

Ionada, with headquarters in Canada, is a technology leader in air emission and water treatment technologies. A pioneer in developing and implemen-ting membrane exhaust scrubbing solutions, Ionada has developed a game-changing technology for the marine Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) market. With the introduction of the first marine membrane scrubber system, Ionada is applying the high efficiency, reliability, and low energy consumption of membrane technology to EGCS. The result is an EGCS that is is 50% smaller, and 30 % more energy efficient than competitive salt water scrubbers – making it the ideal solution for ship owners. Ionada’s mission is to provide emission abatement technologies that not only keep our air and waters clean, but provide a financial benefit to its customers.

port metro vancouver introduces neW Gps dashboardIn early 2013, Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) announced Smart Fleet, a three-year action plan to improve collaboration, reliability and long-term sustainability of the container truck sector. PMV has equipped 700 Truck Licensing System (TLS) container trucks with GPS transponder units, which represents approximately 50% of the fleet. It has also made avai-lable a new, real-time GPS Dashboard that provides the most current sta-tus of road and average in-gate wait times based on the previous hour, as well as marine container terminals’ turn times.

Port Metro Vancouver has also launched a new app for Apple iOS and Android devices. The free app is packed with helpful information, including how to identify the dif-ferent types of ships in harbour, and the ways that the port contributes to community and facilitates quality of life.

short-sea shippinG project in nanaimo, british columbia The Nanaimo Port Authority and Canada’s Ministry of International Trade will partner to develop a short-sea shipping project in British Co-lumbia to further bolster Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI). Under APGCI, the Government of Canada is contri-buting up to $4.65 million to modernize the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area and rehabilitate an aging dock that has been inactive for more than a decade because of its condition. The project will enhance the port’s ability to handle increased volume in a more efficient manner, thereby creating local jobs, economic growth and prosperity. It will also decrease road congestion and travel time for users by establishing a direct water link for Vancouver Island importers and exporters to Asia-Pacific markets.
