August Program: Corvid Natural History and What Is Wildlife Rehabilitation?

An educational Crow Program from the West Sound Wildlife Shelter

Monday, August 13th, 7pm

Ed and Ebeneezer, the American crows, have given programs to hundreds of children and adults, sharing facts and stories about crows, life in the wild, and wildlife of all types. Together with their handler, Elena Fox, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, these clever birds will give you a unique insight into their world. A Word About Outings All PWC outings and other activities are open to anyone, but if you enjoy our company and what we do, we would like you to become a member. The persons sponsoring trips should not be considered instructors or leaders. If you are unsure of your abilities, discuss the trip thoroughly with the organizer. Each participant is responsible for his or her own comfort and safety on any outing. Always carry the 10 essentials. Please Call Early As a courtesy to the sponsor of an outing in which you are interested, please try to call at least two days before the trip for single-day outings, and as soon as possible for overnight outings. This allows the sponsor time to make necessary arrangements, or alternate plans, should a trip be canceled for some reason. Pet Policy Please leave pets at home when attending PWC outings unless the trip is specifically listed as welcoming them. Carpool and Ride Sharing We strongly encourage carpooling and ride sharing as a way to reduce impact to trailheads, minimize our environmental footprint, and reduce costs. Please be considerate to your drivers, including situations when you ride with different drivers in each direction. The amount you contribute to your driver(s) should reflect the distance driven, the cost of gas, and tolls/parking fees – short trips might be $5 per person, long trips could be considerably more. The WEBSITE: A Source for Outings Our PWC Website calendar is at: http://www.pwckitsap.org/content/117-pwc-calendar.html If you don’t see something that interests you in this newsletter, check the website for additional trips and last-minute trips and updates. If you are a trip sponsor, have a new trip to list, or need to update an existing trip, please see the end of this newsletter for more information.

Upcoming Trips & Events:

EXTREME DAY HIKE Friday, Aug 3-4 Contact: David Boyde at 360-692-9325, or email: [email protected] Dayhike the 45-mile long Low Divide Trail from Lake Quinault to Lake Mills (or vice versa). We will leave for the trailhead(s) sometime Friday afternoon or evening, and then hike until we get to the other end. Due to transportation issues, it will be much easier to have two groups – a south-north, and a north-south group. This will enable a key swap mid-route.

Snow Lakes / The Enchantments Sunday, Aug 5-7 Contact: Jay Thompson at 360-509-9918, or email: [email protected] Jay has a few spots left on his Enchantments permit. This area, in the Central Cascades near Leavenworth, Washington, is spectacularly scenic and so access is carefully regulated to prevent degradation of the campsites and trails. Call Jay for more info. SunshineTrip: Lava Lake Campground Monday, Aug 6-12 Contact: Bob Brown at 360-569-2878, or email: [email protected] Join Bob Brown on this car camping trip to Lava Lake Campground near Bend, Oregon. Bob created a promotional video which is available at the following link: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/33747134/BendCarCampPromotionalVideo.mp4 MAP Meeting at Emily Grice's house Thursday, Aug 9 at 7 pm Contact: Emily Grice at 206-842-7883, or email: [email protected] All members are encouraged to attend this PWC event-planning meeting (''Membership Activity Planning''). Those present try to coordinate proposed outings to offer trips on most weekends. Trips that are agreed upon are subsequently published in the Penwicle and listed in the Calendar. Feel free to bring snacks or drinks to the meeting to share. This month's MAP meeting is hosted by Emily Grice. Directions: Mapquest (not Google) will get you to the feeder drive, four driveways south of High School Road. There will be a tall cedar sign with Emily’s number at the top. Turn in and up the paved drive, turn left at mailboxes, on dirt, go straight to the end. You are welcome to come early and bring family members. Emily has a 2-acre pond and a canoe - or you can bring a small boat, inner tubes if really hot (deep water swimming only - shallow water has a parasite), and fishing gear.

the pasture through the day. The Bighorn, Beartooth, Absarokee, and Wind River Mountains frame the scene. If you have never visited the Black Hills in South Dakota, you have not experienced one of the most beautiful geologic anomalies in North America – a granite intrusion in the otherwise flat Great Plains, with many national parks and monuments, and Custer State Park with its buffalo. This portion of the trip will include riding the George S. Mickelson Bike Trail that runs south from Deadwood for 109 miles to Edgemont, SD. Drive across the Bighorn Mountains and/or the Bear Tooth Highway (above 10,000 feet), or visit Devil’s Tower, on this trip for an added experience. Contact Bob for more information at 360-569-2878 evenings.

Other Outings (General information describing trips and events that recur over multiple weeks)

Recurring (Weekly) after-work Green Mountain Hike Wednesdays, Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and Sep 7 at 6:10 pm Contact: Jay Thompson at 360-509-9918, or email: [email protected] Weekly Wednesday after-work Green Mountain hikes will begin starting May 9th and continue throughout the summer and into fall. Be at the Gold Creek trailhead at 6:05 pm and be prepared to hike by 6:10. Bring headlamps in early spring and late fall as a precaution. Hikes will occur every Wednesday evening, rain or shine. These hikes have been very popular and are a great opportunity to meet hikers of all abilities from the Peninsula Wilderness Club, Kitsap Outdoors Meetup and the Kitsap Hikers Group on Facebook. We have had as few as 3 and as many as 22 hikers on past events. All are welcome to attend and share a snack or two at the summit. A good place to rideshare from is the parking area at the Wildcat Lake County Park (not to be confused with Wildcat Trailhead) as a park-n-ride. It's free to park there. A Discover Pass is required at the Gold Creek trailhead. To see images from last year's hikes, see the club website. The PWC website also has a detailed description of the Gold Creek Trail, including driving directions to the trailhead in their Field Guide. Road Bike Rides with Tom Leurquin Sundays & Thursdays, Aug 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26 and 30 Contact: Tom Leurquin at 206-842-5906, or email: [email protected] Tom will be two-wheeling on Thursdays and Sundays. The ride location, length, and pace will be oriented towards the group. Many of the rides will be on Bainbridge Island, and will be about 20 miles with 1500' elevation gain and greater.

The Sunday rides may be anywhere, such as Bainbridge Island, Olympic Discovery Trail, Burke Gilman Trail, Vancouver Island, or elsewhere. Start time will generally be 10 am. Starting location will change by week. Check the PWC Website calendar or call Tom for the specifics of that day's ride.

Into the Future (Trips that require group planning or reservations by each attendee)

Fall 2012 Grand Canyon Trip Sep 15-30 (Tentative) Contact: David Boyde at 360-692-9325, or email: [email protected] David is currently in the planning phase of a September trip to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. Initial plan includes a day hike Rim to Rim via the North Kaibab and South Kaibab Trails, 22 miles (optional), and a 6-day, 5-night Grand Canyon trip. The Grand Canyon route will be the Royal Arch Route, which includes a 20-foot rappel, and the dates on the permit are Sep 20 through 25. There may also be a 2-day Zion Narrows backpack trip, which is 16 miles, mostly hiking in the Virgin River; a 2-day West Rim backpack trip, also 16 miles, plus an optional side trip to the top of Angel's Landing; and a Huber Wash - Chinle Trail - Coalpits Wash 12-mile loop day hike. This will be determined on July 5. There is only one opening left for this trip. Trip to Nepal with Brian Steely Starting approximately October 1, 2012 Contact: Brian Steely at 360-297-3825, or email: [email protected] Brian will be returning to Nepal to an area he loves (Tilicho Lake) and going to an area he has not been (Dhaulagiri Base Camp). This will be a totally catered affair and all you will have to carry is your day pack. It will be professionally guided and the camps will be set up for us and the cooking will be done for us. This is a visually stunning part of the world and one of those experiences of a lifetime. Please note: This is not a commercial endeavor on Brian’s part and Brian is only a person of contact. All participants will be making their own arrangements for flying to Nepal and back, and dealing with the Nepal agent. The agent, Dipak Dhamala, is a personal friend of Brian’s, and has arranged his previous trips. For itinerary and details, contact Brian. See the PWC Website calendar for more info.

PWC Join or Renew Membership PWC

The Peninsula Wilderness Club is an informal organization for persons interested in active outdoor pursuits. Main activities include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, rock climbing, skiing, kayaking, and bicycle riding. All outings, from casual hikes to technical mountain sports, are initiated by individual members. These members are volunteers who generously offer to make minimal arrangements so an outing can take place. They do not accept responsibility for the safety or care of any participant. The PWC does not conduct instructional programs and members are expected to have whatever clothing, equipment, skills, and physical conditioning are appropriate for the outing they wish to join. Members are expected to practice responsible environmental stewardship and must accept that there are dangers and a risk of injury in most outdoor activities.

Dues are $25 per household per year. Send a check or money order to: Peninsula Wilderness Club P.O. Box 323 Bremerton, WA 98337-0070
