“The Dog Days of Summer.”When I was young I would hearthis term used whenever Augustrolled around. I always tried tofigure out what this meant. Tomy young mind, my dog wasdoing fine and I did not know ofany special days she got in thesummer. Then I found out thatit referred, in the negative, to thehot temperatures that came inAugust. Being an August baby, Iwas never quite fond of theterm. While it is hot in August, Iquite liked the month of mybirth and found lots of funthings to do.
As you might remember, Igrew up in Idaho. As I havestated to some folks who ask, Ifind the weather between hereand there to be somewhatopposite. There we enjoyed thesummer and heated the house in
the winter. Here, we enjoy thewinter and cool the house in thesummer. As such, I submit toeach of you to look for funthings that you can do in thesummer to “beat the heat.”Some ideas that we like to do asa family is have an indoorpicnic, go to the movies (we takea blanket because those theatersare cold), sit and sip lemonadeand eat cookies with friendswhile you tell fun stories (youwill find lemonade and cookiesat the bar each day to enjoy forguests or residents), play a boardor card game, or turn out thelights and tell ghost stories. Allof these are items we have cometo enjoy living in San Antonio.
“The Dog Days of Summer”—I have now found I like this termand look forward to this time ofyear. I hope you enjoy this timewith me.
