UMECRA Member, Debbie

Searle Completes Tevis!

July 25, 12:47 PM Chicago Horse Examiner Kimberly Rinker

Rider Debbie Searle, 48, completed her very first attempt at the

Tevis Cup, a 100-mile endurance ride that begins at Truckee, CA

and ends at Auburn, CA, over some of the toughest and most

demanding terrain found anywhere in the United States.

Searle, a resident of Beecher, Illinois, regularly competes on the

UMECRA circuit in the Midwest with her 13-year-old Arabian-

Quarter Horse cross, Ranger.

―I really enjoy trail riding because of the various types of trails

that you encounter,‖ said Searle. ―I’m not as competitive as I am

adventurous. I wanted to do the Tevis because it’s a different kind

of challenge and to see if I could.‖

Searle completed the journey—which was first run in 1955—in

just under the required 24-hour time limit at 4:49 a.m on Sunday,

July 25, and thus, earned the coveted ―Tevis belt buckle.‖ She

began the ride at 5:15 a.m. the previous morning.

―I’d never do it again,‖ she admitted. ―It was scary and horrible.

We rode over steep terrain and 12-inch wide trails with 6,000-feet

drop-offs and we were riding in the dark. It was the toughest

thing I’ve ever done. Once was enough. I’ve certainly got this one

out of my system.‖

But Searle said she’ll continue riding in the Midwest when not

caring for her racehorses at Balmoral Park, the home base of she

and her husband, trainer-driver Steve Searle.

―Our rides here in the Midwest will now seem like a piece of

cake,‖ she laughed.

“Endure for the Cure” Ride Benefits from AERC Trail Grant Project

This was the tenth year for the Arabian Horse Distance

Riding Association’s ―Endure for the Cure‖ ride at

Farmdale Park, near East Peoria, Illinois. The ―Endure for

the Cure‖ ride is a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for

the Cure Foundation and its fight against breast cancer.

This year, the ride raised almost $8,000! Over ten years

this ride has raised more than $170,000 for the Foundation.

Tim and Ruth Casserly brought in the most donations and

won a custom made saddle which was again generously

donated by Kristi Kesick of Native Spirit Saddlery. Donna

Lee Ozment brought in the second largest amount in

donations and won a Garmin from the Distance Depot,

another generous and repeat donor to this cause. Lucy

Veigel brought in the third largest amount in donations and

won a set of Oster cordless clippers donated by Odds on

Racing and Big D’s Tack Shop. A big thank you to Donna

Lee Ozment, Robin Schadt and Deb Searle for their hard

work in coordinating the fundraising and drawing.

In last month’s newsletter the winners of the drawing were

listed, one of whom was Robert Harms, shown here with

some of her many winnings, including an afghan made by

Dr. Cindy Schlund for the event and a pink wheelbarrow

donated by Ace Hardware.

Although there are plenty of stream crossings and water on

the trail at the park, for the previous nine years tanks and

trucks needed to be arranged to bring water in for the ride

camp. This year, though, through the support of an AERC

trail grant, the supply of water at the ride camp was greatly

facilitated. This AERC grant supported the installation of

a water line and hydrant. A trench and water line had to be

laid from the well at the Army Corps of Engineers’

Maintenance Building 900 feet down the hill and under a

road to the corner of the parking lot at the park. The trails

at Farmdale Park are multi-use, shared by hikers, mountain

bikers and equestrians, so the water supply and hydrant

will benefit all users of the park.

For the 2010 ―Endure for the Cure‖ ride 101 riders

competed on 122 horses over the three days of endurance,

limited distance, competitive trail and driving events. This

year’s ride was also the site of the National Shagya

Distance Challenge, sponsored by the American Shagya

Arabian Verband (ASAV). The Shagya Challenge Cup for

the fastest 50 mile Shagya was won by Ellen Rapp on SA

Belshazzar, who was also first across the line.

Point Standing Update: Sorry there is no points update for the

newsletter this time, please check www.umecra.com for the next

update. Testing of new points keeping program has set me back a bit on the

results, they will be up shortly. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Susan B Komen Raffle

Winners!

It’s been a busy summer! Fall rides are coming soon – check the ride schedule and get out there and RIDE! Got some extra time while you are at a ride? Check with the Ride Manager – they often need help at the vet checks (scribing is a great way to learn what the vets are looking for), setting up for pot luck, or help out with a Novice ride. You will be glad you did! Where else can you get a chance to meet new people and catch up with old friends? The Ride Managers will appreciate it!
