Roof is centre of attentionMarley Eternit has provided 130,000 of its Thrutone fibre cement slates forThe Cavell Centre mental health unit inPeterborough. Thrutone satisfied thestrict selection criteria of quality, andan aesthetic finish which would blendin seamlessly with the surroundingarea. Thrutone is a fibre cement slatewith a smooth surface and square cutedges in blue/black colour. The fibrecement slate offers the twin benefits of matching the aesthetic appeal ofnatural slate with the performance and cost attributes of modernmanufacturing capabilities.

Baldwin Boxall’s VIGIL EVAS systemhas been installed at the flagship IKEAstore in Wembley. Installed by LogicFire Systems, the 14-zone emergencyvoice alarm/public address system willensure that, should a situation arise,clear, pre-recorded instructions will be heard, minimising panic and aidingsafe evacuation. The system isaccessed by a combination ofmicrophones, each with descendingpriority; all-call emergency firemansmicrophone, EVAS 16-zone rack-mounted control panel, three 16-zonepaging microphones and two localhand-held microphones. There is also a satellite input providingadvertisement and spotannouncements to public zones and a background music facility.

Baldwin Boxall keeps vigilant

The need for a distinctive façade combinedwith the requirement for effective shading toa full-height atrium were key factors in thedesign of a new Travelodge at Borehamwoodin Hertfordshire. Elegance SC solar shadingfrom Sapa Building Systems provided thesolution. The hotel operators wanted toavoid solar gain from the sun in the south-east in the early morning and the south-westerly glare during the late afternoon andevening. Sapa’s Technical Support Team metwith the project design team and, utilisingSapa’s shading calculation software,designed an optimal layout for Elegance SC which ensured that the shading workedmost effectively at these key times. The result is a neat and clever layout withthe 44 rows of 150mm Aero blades arrangedat 195mm centres, with the blades joining in a crisp 90° corner.

Latitude has attitudeThe £180m mixed-use Latitudedevelopment in Leeds city centrehas been built with a unitised wallsystem comprising of bespokecomposite panels from PanelSystems. Panel Systems’composite panels consisted of a3mm powder coated aluminiumtray, a layer of Styrofoam insulationand a steel backing panel for thecurtain walling of the development,which will also be used as flats,retail and leisure units.

Nobel’s K-Series protectsAlder HeyNobel Fire Systems has been chosenby Alder Hey Children’s Hospital toinstall its K-Series fire protectionsystem in the new main kitchen. Nobel Fire Systems satisfied all costand operational needs and ensuredthat the entire installation was carriedout with speed and efficiency, keepingany potential down time to an absoluteminimum.

Kawneer goes back to collegeCurtain walling, windows and doorsfrom Kawneer will feature on the £86mredevelopment of West Kent College.Specialist sub-contractor APIC UK willinstall Kawneer’s AA100 and AA110curtain walling with inclined mullion-drained profiles for double-glazedrooflights, AA601 top-hung casementwindows and series 190 heavy-dutycommercial entrance doors and AA605low/medium-duty swing doors in twostages for design and build maincontractor Galliford Try.

Westfield goes greenPrater has brought green roofs toWest London with the completionof Europe's largest urban shoppingcentre, Westfield London. Spanningover 149,000m2 the completedproject includes five AlumascSedum System green roofs,designed to reduce stormwaterrun-off. Working with supply chainpartners, Prater provided thecomplete design and build packagewhich included the green roofs and structural wall panels.

Masonite engineered timber I-Joists,used as part of the TRADIS closed panelwall and roof system, have beenselected for an exclusive development of four luxury low energy homes nearPenrith. One home owner (fourbedrooms and four person occupancy)now living on the site reports an averageenergy consumption of just9,350kWh/year approximately, which iswell under half the 20,438kWh/year citedby the Energy Saving Trust as beingtypical of the total annual energy consumption of an average UK home.The TRADIS system consists of pre-insulated panels designed to providethermal performance to the highest standard. This timber frame walland warm roof system comprises Masonite engineered timber I-Joistsand Beams; Panelvent sheathing boards; Warmcel 500 insulation;Paneline internal sheathing board and a vapour control layer specified toprovide the minimum vapour resistance difference between the warmand cold side of the panel.

BSF project boastsbiggest school green roofA landmark school building in theNorth East of England is boasting thelargest green roof installation on aneducational project ever undertaken byspecialist Blackdown HorticulturalConsultants. Blackdown installed theimpressive 5,256m² extensive greenroof to the Washington School inSunderland, as part of the newenvironmental standard set by theGovernment’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

Rib deck soffits called forimaginative detailing to preservethe acoustic and fire performanceof drywall compartment walls andpartitions in a major new hospital.Using high performanceplasterboards Knauf Soundshieldand Knauf Fireshield, drywallsubcontractor Astins cut 60,000individual profiles to create thenecessary notched head detailingat Peterborough City Hospital,which has 20 miles – 32,000 linearmetres – of drywall. The hospital,due for completion in 2010, is thelargest of three developments in a £335m healthcare facilitiesupgrade in Peterborough. Knauf Drywall systems are used throughout.

Stirling Lloyd’s advanced solutionshave been used to provide acomprehensive waterproofingpackage for phase one of theSnowhill development inBirmingham. 4,000m2 of Integritankmembrane was spray applied tothe podium deck, providingseamless protection for thebasement car park, as well as thenumerous roof terraces. The bridgedeck waterproofing membrane,Eliminator, was spray applied tothe associated rail viaduct and theSentinel Saba Expansion Joint wasused to provide a solution for theperpendicular joints between thedeck and viaduct, providingcontinuous protection againstwater ingress.

A complete package

Comprehensive contractPace Installations has completed a £180k floor, wall and ceilingcontract for the Village Hotel,Wirral. Pace was able to valueengineer the acoustic floating floor,which resulted in the installation ofa higher performing and more costeffective timber deck system. Forthe dry lining and suspended ceilingworks, Pace installed over 2,000m2

of high specification plasterboardand 1,000m2 of ceiling panels.

Kingspan kicks offThe Vale Pavilion is thecentrepiece of the new trainingfacilities for Cardiff City FC andCardiff Blues RFC, and has beenclad with the Kingspan RenderPanel system from KingspanInsulated Panels. KingspanRender Panel uses an innovativegasket to minimise the visualimpact of jointing, can provide U-values as low as 0.15 W/m²K andan air leakage rate of 5m3/hr/m2

or better.

The new £4m sciencebuilding, part of ClevedonCommunity School in Bristol,is blending in serenely withits rural surroundingsthanks to Natura claddingfrom Marley Eternit.Located in the beautifulSomerset countryside, thebuilding’s exterior is clad inNatura fibre cement panelsin a dark grey Anthracitecolour. Natura has a subtle tinted, semi-translucent applied coating whichallows the texture of the fibre cement to show through. This, combinedwith an extensive choice of colours, provides designers with the ability tocreate striking and aesthetically pleasing buildings. The Anthracite panelsused on Clevedon Community School were specified by internationallyrenowned architectural practice Aedas, which took its inspiration for thebuilding’s design and the choice of cladding colour from the granite rockfound on the tors in the south west of England.

The main entrance, ticketoffices and information hubs were allfitted with Slimdrive SLs on glass,providing a stylish, practical solution.

In the area ofSouth John Street, Vetter UK usedmore than 200 linear metres of theInterspan FS 160 expansion joint.
