onthecover: “Celebration of your achievement is as important as your achievement!”

The PRT is a group of interested stakeholders, working on four Task Teams, based on the key growth drivers for this area. The report to Council made 28 key observations on everything from transportation and strategic planning, to sustainability and infrastructure. In summary, both Gary and Linda agreed that the PRT is strong and valid, providing both municipal Councils with valuable insight into the needs of the Business Community, that it needs to prioritize its recommendations; that it needs to dovetail with some of the existing work that is currently underway, such as sustainability; that it needs to stay involved and provide input regarding transportation, planning and infrastructure. The future appears to involve a lot more public/private partnerships, so creative thinking and cooperation will be key. Linda and Gary agreed to look at a couple of specific initiatives such as pre-existing agreement for industrial land which could negate the need for the municipalities to “bank” employment land. The PRT used the occasion of the Plenary Session to launch its website www.prosperitypeterborough.com where you will find a complete description of the PRT, the Task Teams and a copy of the Spring Newsletter. For a copy of the report to Council go to the Chamber website at www.peterboroughchamber.ca

Prosperity Round Table Annual Plenary Session

t he Prosperity Round Table (PRT) held its annual Plenary Session at the Navy Club on June 22nd. Having delivered its first report to the City/County Joint Council meeting in December, the group was eagerly anticipating a response from the CAO’s for both the City (Linda Reed) and the County (Gary King).

Smart Tax Reform lays Foundation For Stronger Economic Growth

lSales tax harmonization, in combination with

other tax reform measures contained in the provincial budget (including reduced corporate and personal tax cuts and the elimination of the small business surtax) will put Ontario on a path towards increased competitiveness, productivity and economic recovery that will benefit every Ontarian and every business operator in the province.

Ontario businesses will benefit in numerous ways:• Virtually all PST paid on business inputs will

be rebated - firms now pay over 1/3 of all PST collected or $5 billion• Firms retain their GST rebates on business inputs• The cost of production will go down, giving companies the opportunity to lower prices, or invest in machinery and staff• Instead of collecting and remitting two taxes (GST and PST), businesses will collect and remit one (HST), saving about $500 million in administration costs• The marginal effective tax rate on business investment will be cut in half (when lower corporate taxes and single sales tax are taken into account)

Consumers will also benefit:• While some prices will go up, others will go

down as seen in Atlantic Canada where the consumer price index fell slightly

• Consumers will no longer pay tax on tax as the taxes on the production side will be eliminated

• More jobs will be created through more competitive businesses

• Sales tax credits for low and middle income earners

• One time transitional funding for families• A few exemptions and rebates for municipalities,

academic institutions, schools, hospitals, charities and non-profit associations

While a single sales tax may not be perfect, it’s a big improvement on the inefficient layering of tax that we have now with the PST.

This is an important move forward for Ontario and reflects courageous leadership by both the federal and provincial governments. Ontario just might be the catalyst to full sales tax harmonization across the country, finally putting Canada on equal footing with over 130 countries in

the world in the global competition for business investment and job creation.

Len Crispino is President& CEO for the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. For additional information on Ontario Chamber of Commerce activities, please refer to their website www.occ.on.ca

eadership is not about taking the easiest course of action; it is about taking the wisest course of action.Sales tax harmonization is one of those tough but important choices. It will prove to be the single most important stimulus to the Ontario economy. And yet, as Stuart Johnston, Vice-President of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, stated at a luncheon hosted by the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, “it takes an hour to explain it and two minutes to demonize it.”

CElEBRATINGmatters“Celebration of your achievement is as important as your achievement!”

tSix years ago, the Greater Peterborough Chamber Of Commerce and the Small Business Week Committee established the Peterborough Business Excellence Awards in order to promote the advancement of responsible business leadership and prosperity within the community.

It is our goal that many noteworthy and accomplished companies will be recognized and honoured with this prestigious award.

There are numerous benefits of participation:•Your company will gain recognition as a top achiever and will join leading companies in Peterborough, as an outstanding member of this community

•Your business will be recognized by media and in business newsletters

•Three Finalists for each category will be recognized in a video presentation at the Awards Dinner on Wednesday, October 21st.

We will announce the three finalists for each category in the September 28th Peterborough Examiner, with the final winners revealed at the Awards Dinner on October 21st, and the Finalists and Winners will be included in a special supplement of The Peterborough Examiner following the event. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to celebrate your company’s achievement and enter your nomination prior to August 31st.

We encourage interested businesses to nominate themselves, or to nominate any qualified individual or business for any of the award categories (you may submit nominations for more than one category, providing you address the specific category criteria).

This year we have simplified the nomination process. Nominators choose the appropriate category(ies), provide 100 words to describe why they feel this company should be nominated in that specific category, and then submit the nomination form(s) to us. They need only complete Part 2 if they can, otherwise we will contact the nominee for the additional information required for the judging process.

Each of the nomination forms are now an editable .pdf for each of the categories. So, now you can complete the form and submit it online, or print it off and complete it manually, whichever is more convenient for you!

Please Note: For those companies who are self-nominating, please ensure to complete both Parts 1 & 2, as judging will be based on the information provided

The Business Citizen of the Year form has not changed.

There will be a total of 17 awards presented, including our prestigious

Business Citizen of the Year Award and although the number of categories hasn’t changed, a few of the categories have:

•There is now only one Entrepreneurial Spirit Award

•There is now only one Manufacturing Award

•The Retail category has been split into two: - Retail – Chain/Franchise - Retail – Non-Chain/Non-Franchise

•A new “Local Focus” category has been created

To check out the various category criteria, nomination forms and ticket order forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce, or are available as an editable .pdf on the Chamber website at www.peterboroughchamber.ca/pbea/

As a result of the past five Excellence Awards celebrations, the Chamber has highlighted 240 Finalists, with 80 receiving the award. Don’t pass up on an opportunity to celebrate your business, and submit your nomination today!

Plan to celebrate your company’s achievement, or recognize another company’s achievement, and mark your calendars now for the 6th Annual Peterborough Business Excellence Awards!

he Peterborough Business Excellence Awards publicly recognize and honour local businesses who have demonstrated a passion for excellence.

burnham mansion restaurant brad and jill hunt

Jill and I found winning the Restoration Award for Burnham Mansion in 2006 very validating. Burnham Mansion is truly a memory bank of the past for the decendants of the Burnham’s and later the Turner family. During the Hay Days of George Nicolaides Burnham Mansion hosted many graduations, weddings and other family events. The tradition continues today where people revisit their past lives and their children do a repeat performance. Yes the Restoration Award definitely validated the time and expense.

The May Speakers were Lisa Doyle and Mary Jean Roblin of Jackson Creek Retirement Residence, located on 481 Reid Street, gave us a view into the world of retirement living in the Peterborough area.

The residence offers all inclusive independent living for Seniors. As well, for Seniors who haven’t made that final decision to sell their home and go to a retirement home, they have packages where you can stay and experience the amenities they have to offer, prior to making that very important decision. For a complete list of the vast services they offer, please visit their website at: www.chartwellreit.ca/home_locations/jackson_creek.htm or give Lisa or Mary Jean a call at 742-0411 to arrange for your tour of their establishment.

The speaker at the June Breakfast Club Meeting was Steven Bark, of Steven Bark Chartered Accountants, who provided his own point of view on Peterborough. Due to space limitations this month, we are unable to run the full article Steven wrote, however, we will provide you with his overall message, which was:

“It is business health that sustains a community – not necessarily stimulates the community – but sustains it. A city that becomes a retirement town is by definition commercially unproductive. The solution to finding a vibrant sustainable future can start with the Chamber of Commerce members.”

Steven can be reached at 745-8600 or [email protected] or check out his website www.stevenbark.com

Mike Nickerson gave a phenomenal presentation to Club Laurus on Thursday, May 28th at Mexicali Rosa’s. Mr. Nickerson is the author of three books, his most recent book Life, Money and Illusion: Living on earth as if we want to stay, which will be published this summer. Mr. Nickerson reminded us of the important relationship between Human Beings and Earth: the law of nature and human responsibilities; the monetary system; the illusion of expansion vs. reality; celebration of life, and more. Mr. Nickerson’s passion is an inspiration to all and Club Laurus is one of many groups who have had the privilege to meet and hear him speak. For more information on Mr. Nickerson and his work, you can visit his website www.sustainwellbeing.net

Peterborough’s Business Excellence Award winner Doug Armstrong, the 2008 Business Citizen of the Year, spoke with the Chamber’s Club Laurus group on Thursday, June 25th at Mexicali Rosa’s. Mr. Armstrong discussed his many accomplishments

and the huge impact his contributions have had on the City and Community of Peterborough. Mr. Armstrong goes above and beyond with all of his involvement, keeping in mind that the citizens and business citizens of Peterborough are his main priority. Club Laurus attendees received great advice from Mr. Armstrong and possibly a glimpse of their own future, as a result of contributing to the City of Peterborough and our Business Community.

Many thanks again, go to Pat Marren and his team at Nationwide Barter for being our Official Club Laurus Sponsor.

Club Laurus would like to thank Jon Bryan and the staff of Mexicali Rosa’s for hosting Club Laurus for the past 6 months.

Please note that Club Laurus will be moving to a new venue starting August 27th, 2009. Please join us at the 2nd Floor Lounge, 172 Simcoe St, from 5 – 7 pm for our `back by popular demand’ Trivia Night!

MEDIchair Trent - Home Medical Equipment Specialists recently moved to 329 McDonnel Street, the old home of Peterborough Volkswagen. The new premises provide room to showcase the latest healthcare equipment aids. It also hosts the Wheelchair Downs Racetrack where ‘Mind That Mary’ nosed out ‘Big Boss Stu’ in the featured race for the day. Mary LaRocque and Stuart Harrison were great sports and provided a demonstration of wheel chair racing, which is obviously a lot more challenging than many of us perceived.

Thanks to the hospitality of Allison, Ron and their highly trained personnel, Chamber members were treated to a wonderful selection of foods and beverages while learning about a new industry, and socializing with business colleagues, clients and prospects.

MEDIchair Trent provides a comprehensive selection of home health care products, including manual and electric wheel chairs, scooters, lift chairs, walkers and stair lifts. They also offer a full range of home accessibility solutions and soft disposable health care products such as incontinence supplies, wound care, compression and bracing. Their health care products enhance the quality of life for people experiencing disabilities, injuries, surgeries and aging.

It is comforting to know we have such wonderful professional consultants and caring people to service us right here in our city. Thank you to the team at MEDIchair Trent for being such wonderful hosts!

38thAnnual Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament by Cathy Martin, Event Coordinator

On June 10th, the Chamber hosted yet another wonderful Golf Tournament on the links of the beautiful Kawartha Golf & Country Club. Co-sponsored by Higgins Hardwood Flooring and Cabinetree, and organized by a dedicated team of Chamber volunteers, the sold out tournament boasted fun contests, great prizes, wonderful weather, great golfing and excellent networking opportunities!

The day kicked off with a delicious barbecue lunch sponsored by Mexicali Rosa’s and Labatt’s. Jon Bryan and the staff of Mexicali’s cooked up delicious pulled pork sandwiches and veggie burgers, served with a cold beer, courtesy of Labatt’s. All golfers were given a tournament goody bag filled with lots of great giveaways, then sent out onto the course for the 1pm

shot-gun start, which was officially kicked off by our Honourary Starter, Gary Dalliday. Each group of golfers were given a special tournament scorecard which recognized each of the wonderful Hole, Cart and Contest Sponsors, as well as provided details of the various contests and activities on each hole.

We were thrilled to have Bell host their annual putting contest again, this year in support of the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Foundation. Thanks to the contributions of all of our generous golfers, Leigh Prentice of Bell, was able to present a cheque for over $750 to the foundation at the end of the tournament!

The day was rounded out with a wonderful dinner prepared by the Kawartha Golf & Country Club and our Awards Ceremony hosted by our Event M.C., Bob Doornenbal

and Morgan Smith, 2009 Golf Committee Chair, had the privilege of handing out the individual and team prizes from the day.

On behalf of the 2009 Golf Tournament Committee, and the Chamber, we would like to thank all of the golfers and sponsors who participated in this year’s tournament making it another overwhelming success!

The Chamber’s 39th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on June 9th, 2010 and sponsorship opportunities are now available. Contact Anne Arnold at 748-9771 x200 or [email protected] for more information.

On May 14th the Chamber sponsored a breakfast training program entitled “Thriving in Challenging Times – Plan to Prosper”. On that cool rainy morning 18 interested participants braved the weather to increase their knowledge and wisdom.

We all know that we make up, or dream up, a story when we hear a phrase or the title for a seminar. This is simply the part of our brain that tries to constantly make sense of the world and to keep us safe. When the participants read the above mentioned title for this program they envisioned, dreamt up, an idea of what the seminar would entail. This also happened for all those who read the newsletters and promotional pieces for this May seminar and did not attend. This dreaming either brought you into the room or did not; and now for the rest of the story…..

To answer the question of ‘Plan to Prosper’, the seminar took the participants to the land of conscious and intentional being and doing.

The seminar was a highly interactive and participatory three hours for the attendees. There was specific information presented around being aware of what is trying to happen in a situation, and what your conscious intentional response is to what is happening. There were specific tools and training around ‘Locus of Control’ – allowing the participant to clearly see where they had control in a situation, what they had influence over, and what was outside of their influence and control. Then there was an experiential learning using a Business Metaskill Wheel. Participants were able to know and feel what conscious and intentional was and felt like. Then there was an action program to take this new learning and apply it immediately in their businesses.

So, what did the participants say about the program? The participants rated the program with a 98.1% effectiveness rating. And even though the seminar was not close to their original dreams

of what it would entail, they rated the material at 91% effective. And there was a 100% rating on ‘Was the workshop fun?”

Gary Harris, of Harris Coaching & Consulting, was the facilitator at this event. Gary is a Chartered Accountant and a certified business and team coach, with over 30 years of business experience.

benefactsby Brian BulgerCertainty in Uncertain Times

The economic world is changing all around us. Businesses large and small are looking at their operations and trying to navigate through uncertain waters. This means looking at all aspects of their operations and searching for ways to reduce costs - from capital expenditures, to labour costs, and even employee benefits.

Employee benefits can be viewed as a cost in the short-term or as an investment in your company’s future success. Employee benefits are an important tool for employers to attract and retain the best employees. Although the current economic pressures have affected individuals across the country, long-term projections still show a shortage of skilled workers in the future.

Employee benefits should be viewed as an investment in employee engagement and retention. Your employees are your most important asset, and an engaged and healthy workforce is a key

component to any firm’s future success. Even giants of industry struggle with the issue of providing benefits for their employees. According to the New York Times, Wal-Mart’s benefit costs have risen by 15% per year on average since 2002.

Your Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan is available exclusively through your membership in your local Chamber of Commerce or Board of Trade. For over 35 years, the Chambers Plan has provided affordable and competitive benefit plans to businesses like yours all across Canada. Your financial concerns are understood and the renewal rates for participating firms have averaged less than 5% a year over the past 5 years.

The need to satisfy the needs of many employee groups in your organization is also well understood. Young Generation Y employees (born after 1980) want their employers to be interested in them and their good health. Generation X

employees (born 1965 - 1980) have competing responsibilities - working on their careers, raising a family and perhaps contributing toward the care of elderly parents. And Baby Boomers (born 1964 and earlier) have started to focus on health issues as they grapple with the effects of aging.

Whether it’s covering prescription drugs for Baby Boomers, having Best Doctors, or Employee Assistance Programs available for Generation X’s, or the services of a Massage Therapist or Dietician for the Generation Yer’s, the goal of the Chambers Plan is to give you and your employees security and peace of mind.

If you want to achieve certainty in uncertain times think Chambers of Commerce Group Benefit Plan for you and your employees.

This article has been brought to you exclusively by your Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan Agent/Broker, Brian Bulger. For more information, Brian can be reached at 741-1400.
