The seventh annual Kitz 4 Kidz cam- paign, held at Value Drug Mart, began as an initiative to help families in need with school supplies. “It was recognized that there were some kids at the start of the school year that didn’t have the supplies they need- ed to start the school year. We wanted to give them the tools they needed to do well in school,” said Gord Morck, manager of Value Drug Mart in Strath- more. Each year during the month of Au- gust, people can wander through dif- ferent Value Drug Mart locations gath- ering school supplies to donate, while shopping for their own back-to-school needs. There is a bin located next to the Kitz 4 Kidz sign, where people can leave their donations. There are also two different kits available which people can purchase for $5 that have an assortment of pre-selected items for those in a hurry or unsure what to pur- chase. “The idea was formed so that people could donate and it could be given to the schools anonymously,” said Morck. Parents can inform their child’s teach- er or principal they are in need of a kit, then the teacher will request the items from their school board. “It doesn’t identify the children who are in need and it allows them to ex- cel.” In previous years the campaign has done well with over 22,000 kits sold equaling over $110,000 in donations. “We’ve done really well in the past, been close to the top of the locations for collections of donations,” said Morck. One year, he said, there was even a computer donated. This year however, is sadly lacking in donations so far. The bin is near empty and there are concerns about having enough supplies donated to fill the need. Many people are on vacation, especially with September coming up fast, and Morck hopes more donations will come in be- fore the end of the month. Many people have jobs they like but just aren’t doing what they would love to do. Most people would likely stay at their current job anyway instead of tak-ing a risk and a leap into something they love. Jeremy Goertz is one of the rare few who, once realizing he wasn’t in love with his work, decided to take the risk and it paid off.

“A lot of it had to do with, I turned 30 this year and I mean I had a really great job with really great people but I didn’t love what I did and so I thought, you know what life is short, if there’s something you want to try, you may as well go for it,” said Goertz.

Goertz was recently

picked as one of the top 37 photogra-phers picked out of 1,500 entries to be in Photolife magazine as the top new emerging photographers.

The contest wasn’t about judging an individual photo; it was to showcase the vision and style of the photogra-pher. After images had been submit-ted and reviewed, each photographer’s other work was reviewed.

“These up-and-coming Canadian photographers expose the simple won-ders of daily life, capture images found in their imaginations, mix ordinary ob-jects with the extraordinary and pique our interest with intriguing subjects, compositions and colours. Demonstrat-ing a fearless and no-taboo approach to photography, the 2010 emerging

photographers re-mind us of the im-portance of a true, uncompromised photographic vi-sion,” said Photo-life magazine on August 3.

Goertz’s wife had studied photography at SAIT, and when she stopped for a while he picked it up and taught himself.

“Online is a huge re-source and you can learn anything you want know

I prob-ably shoot 500 to 1,000 pictures a week, all of them trying d i f f e r e n t stuff. Set-ting up stu-

dio lights etcetera,” said Goertz. “I’ve read my camera manual prob-

ably 20 times cover to cover and it sounds stupid but if I am having any issues it’s nice to know exactly what to do.”

He had submitted three images to the magazine in April. One day, about two months before the magazine was printed, he received an email saying he was in the final and they needed the full size file.

“I thought it was spam at first. I called saying I think I have a prank email and they said no (it’s not a prank),” said Go-ertz. His favourite photo subjects are people and he prefers doing creative portraitures, kind of like fashion with a theme.

“My idea is I’ll go out and shoot for like three hours and if I can get one good picture out of 1,000 I’m happy.”

Goertz shoots with a Canon EOS 5DMK2 and is always checking light-ing. He found the best way to learn is just to shoot, shoot and shoot some more.

“I guess my ultimate goal is to earn a living and support my family while do-ing something I love. That’s the whole goal. I’m not looking to get rich and famous. If I can pay the bills and live a happy life and absolutely love what I’m doing, I don’t think you could paint a better picture than that,” said Goertz. He now has a job he loves to do ev-eryday, and being picked as one of the top photographers for Photolife maga-zine is already helping him continue to work his dream. It’s led to a shoot with Mode International, PocketWizard is looking to possibly sponsor him now, and The Camera Store in Calgary may have him teaching some light seminars.

Q: What do I need to organize for my loved one’s funeral?

The family is responsible for deciding what they would like to incorporate into the service; music, tributes/eulogy, pallbearers, where the service is to be held, officiating clergy, and obituaries, just to name a few. As far as preparing for the actual service, your funeral director will work hand in hand with the family to make sure all the details regarding the church and/or hall, contacting the clergy, arranging for a luncheon, preparing all of the paperwork both legal and funeral stationary, musicians, transportation, arranging cemetery plots or cremation particulars, and publishing obituaries have been taken care of. In general, the family is responsible for making all of the decisions, while the funeral director ensures that those wishes are carried out to the final detail.

Amber Dawn Fleury entertained pa-trons at the Co-op pancake breakfast during Heritage Days on July 30. This was not the first time Fleury has per-formed before a crowd, though this one was smaller than one of her pre-vious gigs. Fleury was a contestant on Canadian Idol in 2005, during season three.

“I mainly tried out just to get a pro-fessional opinion on my voice. I never thought I would make the top 10,” said Fleury.

She made it to eighth place before she was eliminated from the show. Currently Fleury works as a paralegal in Calgary, but she hasn’t given up her musical dream even though she did take a small hiatus. When she was 13-years-old Fleury took part in a country music competition in Edmon-ton. She won the competition and the prize was to record a CD and a music video.

Fleury was 26 when she was on Canadian Idol and said it was a great ex-perience.

“It’s just a re-ally great ex-perience for singers who are trying to expand their musical knowl-edge and just build their k n o w l e d g e when it comes to the indus-try itself,” said Fleury.

She made a lot of contacts by being on the show and making it so far into the season. About a year after season three ended Fleury, Ashley Leitao and Casey LeB-lanc, who were also on the show, were approached by the piano player on the show. The piano player was a producer and has his own studio and thought the girls would work as a trio. In 2006 all three girls moved to Ontario to re-cord and promote their CD.

“Unfortunately about a year after that the group disbanded just due to personal reasons. Since then we’ve just kind of gone our separate ways,” said Fleury.

Fleury wrote a few songs with one former band mate and when she met a member of her back up band, Pistol Noon, for the pancake breakfast, they began writing songs together.

“We’re planning to take these songs into the studio probably in September, just to make a really good demo and then hopefully shop the songs and see what kind of feedback we can gener-ate,” said Fleury.

“It’s a tough industry to crack into and it helps if you have money behind you as well, which I don’t. Any little bit

that we want to do we have to save up for it and that makes it kind of hard.”

Fluery is working on put-ting a full time band together. She said she has the play-ers and now it’s just a mat-ter of getting together and figuring things out. While she has always had a country b a c k g r o u n d Fluery has no-ticed she’s be-gun gearing towards classic rock, and said Sheryl Crow is one artist she admires.

Suzi Rawn was one of

Fleury’s closest friends on the show. Rawn made it to the top four before be-ing cut, and Fleury said they still keep in touch occasionally.

Canadian Idol has been cancelled for the past two years due to the economy, but even if it were to come back Fleu-ry won’t take part again. She doesn’t think after making it to the top 10 she would be able to. Anyone who has missed hearing her voice will have to wait until her CD is released or catch her at her next gig.

The 26th annual Gleichen Fall Fair takes place from August 20 to 22, with most of the fun and excitement taking place on Saturday the 21. The day will be filled with fun for the whole family from morning until night. Gleichen is also cel-ebrating its 100th year as a town.

“It became a town on May 6 of 1910. That’s what we’re celebrating, is the fact

that Gleichen has been a town since 1910,” said Gleichen resident Doris Lind-man. Gleichen was incorporated as a vil-lage in the 1890’s and as a town in 1910. It dissolved to hamlet status under the ju-risdiction of Wheatland County in 1998.

Saturday will start with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m. the official reopening of the campground will be taking place and both M.P Kevin So-rensen and MLA Arno Doerkson will be attending.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and peo-ple can expect it to be as good as, if not better than, in the past.

“We’re hoping to have 75 (entries) or so like we did last year,” said Alice Booth, a councillor for Wheatland County and an organizer of the parade.

This will be the second year for the bed derby. Last year there were four en-tries and Booth said they are at six so far this year.

“Years ago, for fun, people used to make up a bed and get somebody into the bed and four people would push it and they would race to see who could get to the finish line first,” said Booth.

“It was one of the things they used to do in Gleichen years ago, so we brought it back to put some fun back into people’s lives.”

The beds aren’t being judged on time or distance. There are five people per bed. One person lies in the bed dressed up in old-fashioned garb, or whatever they would like, and there are two peo-ple at the back of the bed and two peo-ple at the front of it.

Participants will have to maneuver around pylons or other items instead of going straight down the street and each team will be collecting a poker hand. At the end a judge will figure out who has the best poker hand.

Gordon Stewart, president of the Glei-chen Agricultural Society, brought in jousting this year, which takes place at 1:30 p.m.

The Fall Fair has another added treat this year to help commemorate its 100th year as a town.

“We’re doing heavy horse pulls, that’s as close as we can get to our old history,” said Lindman. The heavy horse pulls take place at 3:30 p.m. The horses, draft

horses, will be pulling two logs with planks nailed across and some weight on them.

“This use to be a real big event many years ago, these type of horses used to pull around machinery,” said Lindman.

The car show will have the usual an-tique cars, new cars and motorbikes. It will also have antique farm tractors brought in and there will be a hubcap tossing contest. The people instead of judges decide the winners of most of the events. People are given a sheet to mark what they think of cars in different cat-egories, they also make comments about the bed derby and other events taking place.

“That’s what we’re looking at is getting the people involved to say what they like, because that’s what makes the fair,” said Booth. The Ag grounds is where most of the activity will be, though the rodeo, which starts at 6 p.m. both Fri-day and Saturday night, will be held at the Wilsons grounds just outside of Glei-chen. For anyone who still has energy left at the end of the day, there will be a dance at 9 p.m.

Fall Fair keeps fun in Gleichen

It seems as though someone is always talking about the realignment lately and about how it has affected other towns. One thing no one has heard is exactly how Vegreville and other towns have been affected. Paul Ventura is the own-er of Canadian Tire and his first store as a Canadian Tire dealer was the Veg-reville location in 2000. Vegreville has a highway bypass, which was implement-ed years ago.

“It was not as far away from Highway 16 as the proposed bypass for Strath-more but it still had a significant effect on the town,” said Ventura.

Ventura was in Vegreville for a year and a half, he has talked to a lot of people and when they did the bypass it killed the town.

“Basically it prevented businesses from growing and expanding including the Canadian Tire there,” said Ventura.

“I do know that the bypass in Veg-reville significantly hurt the town and significantly hurt a lot of the businesses including gas stations, restaurants, that sort of thing.”

In Lloydminster there was an over-pass implemented instead of a bypass.

Both towns have roughly the same size Canadian Tire store.

“I found it very interesting that Lloyd-minster is doing much better than Veg-reville and that has a lot to do with the bypass,” said Ventura.

Ventura said about 25 to 30 per cent of his business is from people driv-ing by and stopping into the store. He employs between 60 to 75 people and wants to continue growing business here, but said the bypass will hurt the town big time.

“Yes, they say it’s 10 to 15 years out, but as a business owner, and looking at all the other businesses in town, you’re not going to invest in other businesses coming into town when they see a by-pass on the horizon,” said Ventura.

In an August 13 interview the Minister of Transportation Luke Ouellette said his office was now looking at keeping the bypass close to the town so people would be able to see the highway busi-nesses.

“Visible and convenient are two dif-ferent things. I don’t think it’d be a big issue as long as people can still get here conveniently,” said Ventura.

Ventura would like to see an over-pass put into place if anything has to be done. The option of an overpass was

presented to Ouellette who said, “We could divide the town in half, make it free flow through town with a couple of overpasses over it. Then there would be two service roads, with an overpass at each end, and then nobody would have to come to the town anyway,” in an in-terview on July 23.

Ventura said Lloydminster is thriving because an overpass was put in and people can see all of the businesses and it is convenient for them to stop.

Because Vegreville was bypassed, it is semi inconvenient for people to stop, and there is only a sign for the town, people are not able to actually see any of the businesses from the highway. According to Ventura, Vegreville could have been a thriving community in Alberta but taking the highway going through it, killed the town.

“I see the ill effects of that by looking at two businesses, in my case two Cana-dian Tire businesses, where one is thriv-ing and one is struggling because of the fact there is no traffic,” said Ventura.

As any business owner knows, traffic is what keeps a business going whether it’s vehicular or foot traffic.

“I’m very passionate about this be-cause I’ve seen first hand what it did to Vegreville,” said Ventura.

What are the benefits of having my shaved

into a lion cut?

If you have a longhaired cat, there may very well come a time when you consider giving her a shave, whether to help keep her cool in the summer or to make her easier to groom in general.

A lion cut is where every part of the cat is shaved down except for the head and mane, the front legs, back feet, and tip of the tail. It is very time consuming to keep your long haired cat mat free. A lion cut prevents mats, cuts down on hairballs and shedding. Some older cats can be poor groomers and this cut helps them maintain their cleanliness. Don’t hesitate to ask your groomer

if a lion cut may be beneficial to your cat this summer.

Bake until fruit is bubbly and crust topping is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream.

Kevin SorenSon office

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is pleased that Pub-lic Safety Minister Vic Toews is preparing measures to crack down on human smuggling operations and prevent further abuses of Canada’s generosity towards refugees.

Sorenson says, “I agree with the high level of concern and outrage expressed by my con-stituents over the recent landing of the foreign vessel MV Sun Sea with 490 refugee claimants on Canada’s west coast. Clearly, the intent is to take advantage

of our compassionate treatment of refugees. I agree with calls for our government to follow through on our commitment to prevent these incidents from re-peating in the future.”

Canadian security and pub-lic health officials are provid-ing updates on the processing under Canadian law of those who were found aboard the ship which is suspected to be part of a large human smug-gling operation. The passengers were found to be in better than expected condition after hav-ing had access to food, water and elaborate sanitation facili-

ties during the three month op-eration. Passengers are being processed by Canada Border Services Agency officials under Canadian law.

“As we deal with this current situation under Canadian law, Minister Toews has his Depart-mental officials examining all available options to strengthen our laws in order to address this unacceptable abuse of interna-tional law and Canadian gener-osity. Human smuggling is a de-spicable crime and any attempts to abuse Canada’s generosity for financial gain are utterly unac-ceptable,” Sorenson concludes.

Aspen Crossing Theatre will be holding auditions for its 2010-2011 Dinner Theatre season on August 29 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Those wishing to audition may come to one of the two audition times and should bring a resume and photo, as well as have prepared one monologue.

The audition will include some scene-work, improvisa-tion skills are essential and accents are an asset. The cast-ing will be for six shows during the season, so a variety of actors will be needed. Shows are evenings and weekends, but there is one weekday matinee show during the Christ-mas season, requiring older actors, both male and female who will be available during the afternoon.

All shows will be performed at Aspen Crossing in Moss-leigh. Questions can be directed to Gail Whiteford at [email protected].

School buses are essential modes of transportation, taking thousands of stu-dents to and from school every day. While school bus accidents are rare, rid-ers should still practice safety aboard and around the bus.

In the early days of education, stu-dents were educated in local schools within walking distance. If they needed to travel, it was by horse-drawn wag-on. As the nation’s roadways began to evolve, so did the methods of getting children to school. Eventually school buses became the norm.

In addition to safety procedures re-garding ridership, school buses are built with certain standards in mind. Mirrors, lights, braking systems and the like are regulated to provide the utmost safety to passengers. While catastrophic acci-dents involving school buses are very rare, buses are built to handle much more than the occasional run-ins with passenger cars and light trucks.

Maintaining school bus safety is a team effort. Students need to do their part while riding the bus. Here are the safety precautions that should be fol-lowed.

* Walk to the bus stop, don’t run.* Always use caution when crossing

roadways.* Walk on the sidewalk whenever pos-

sible. If no sidewalk is present, walk in

the opposite direction of traffic to be aware of on-coming traffic.

* Don’t fool around at the bus stop. Accidents can happen when individu-als are unaware of their surroundings or distracted.

* Stand at the bus stop in a safe loca-tion. Do not enter the street.

* Arrive at the bus stop early so there is no need to rush and be distracted.

* Wait for the school bus to come to a complete stop and for other traffic to halt before approaching the bus.

* Promptly take a seat, and remain seated throughout the entire ride.

* Do not distract the bus driver with loud yelling, music, etc.

* Don’t throw anything around the bus.

* Keep the aisle clear to avoid tripping hazards.

* Follow the driver’s instructions in the event of an emergency.

* Remain seated until the bus has stopped at a particular drop-off location.

* When exiting the bus, take three steps away from the bus so that visibil-ity of the driver is improved.

* Watch for traffic when crossing the street. Always cross in front of the bus.

* If something is forgotten on the bus, don’t try to run back and retrieve it. The driver may not expect a student to be returning to the bus.

Even toddlers know how to go online, a fact that only highlights the importance parents must place on cyber safety.

With the first decade of the 21st century now a thing of the past, historians can look back on the last 10 years and begin reflect-ing on the decade’s most memorable moments.

Historians can also begin looking at what changed in the last 10 years, and which trends made the biggest im-pact. Perhaps nothing made a greater impact than the Internet. Though prevalent at the end of the 20th cen-tury, the Internet became even more so during the first decade of the 21st cen-tury, changing nearly every facet of society along the way.

While the Internet made things easier in many ways, it’s made things more dif-ficult in more subtle ways as well. Take, for example, kids and the Internet. While computers were once a place for kids to play games and write papers for school, nowadays the household computer is a means to reaching a whole new world, one that isn’t always so safe for kids. That real-ity highlights the impor-tance parents must place on safeguarding their kids from the ills of the Internet. Fortunately, there are sev-eral steps parents can take to keep kids of all ages safe from whatever or whoever might be lurking online.

* Establish a list of Web sites that are on and off limits. Parents must talk to kids about the nature of the Internet, and how some Web sites are geared toward adults and some are more kid-friendly. When having this discussion, ask kids why they might go on-line, and from there parents and children can begin to establish a list of Web sites that are acceptable, and those that are off limits. Parents can even safeguard access to Web sites outside the realm of what they’ve deemed acceptable by es-tablishing passwords to get on certain sites.

* Don’t share passwords and change them regularly. Nowadays, more and more

sites require passwords to gain full access. E-mail ac-counts, social networking sites, online banking, and even online retailers require a password. Kids and adults alike should always keep these passwords secret and change them regularly. Do not use the same password for every Web site. If any-thing seems out of the ordi-nary or if you feel security might have been breached, immediately contact the Web site and change the password.

* Do not share personal information. Today’s kids are growing up in an en-vironment that’s seemingly less private than ever be-fore. Social networking Web sites have made it common-place to share information easily and without much discretion. However, this has the potential to be very dangerous for younger and older kids alike. Younger kids could be unknow-ingly making themselves accessible to online preda-tors, while older kids, even those in college, should be made aware that prospec-tive employers have begun to visit social networking sites to research an ap-plicant’s background. The more that’s shared online, the less privacy a user has. So it’s best to exercise dis-cretion whenever sharing information online.

* Do not arrange to meet anyone you have met on-line. Though older kids might feel they have enough wits about them to avoid falling victim to an online predator, it’s precisely that attitude of invincibility that online predators count on. Younger and older kids should never meet an on-line acquaintance without first discussing it with their parents. Simply because someone says they’re some-thing online doesn’t mean they are, and many a hor-ror story has resulted from online predators taking advantage of trusting kids, young and old, and even adults.

* Beware of online virus-

es. Online safety does not just involve protecting oneself from physical harm but also financial harm. Online viruses can destroy even the most expensive computers, so it’s important for com-puter users to exercise careful control when visiting Web sites. Oftentimes, a virus will surface through a pop-up window or spam e-mail, so it’s best for adults and kids alike to avoid clicking on any pop-up windows or opening any e-mails from mailers they don’t recognize.

Geraldine Grant and Val Heck had their heads shaved outside of Sobeys to raise money for cancer and diabetes. Grant was doing it for cancer but said diabetes is every bit as deadly as cancer. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a penny you donate or $1,000. It could be the penny that finds the cure,” said Grant. Marshall Billings, an employee at Sobeys decided to get his head shaved with the women. “Anything I can give back to support a cause is good for me,” said Billings. The Fun Country Riders held a well at-tended Show and Gymkana on August 8 at the Strathmore Rodeo grounds. Unfor-tunately the weather did not co-operate for long enough and only the first Gym-kana event (Barrels) was completed be-fore the downpour of rain cancelled the

remainder of the events. Our thanks go to Rob Charette for judging the Show classes and thanks to all the riders and volunteers who tried despite the weather!

The Westmount School Gang, cheering each other on - Jill Rossi, Marie Van Driel, Janice Sumner, Jamie Fairbairn, Tracy Gillis

Photo Contributed by Janice Sumner

Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

Being extremely fit and in superb shape is not a necessity to have taken part in the Strathmore Women’s Triath-lon as Janice Sumner learned. Last year Sumner and her friend Marie Van Driel went to the triathlon workshop because they wanted to sign up for the 2010 tri-athlon because entries were done for 2009. Sumner said there were approxi-mately 20 women at the workshop and they were going around the room telling the others how many triathlons they had done.

“It got to me and I was like ‘I’m here because I’m a wannabe, I wannabe like you guys,” said Sumner.

Deanne Jabs, the race director, told her she didn’t have to be a wannabe any-more and that she and Van Driel would be able to take part in the 2009 triathlon after all. Both women had only a week to prepare, and the workshop taught them what to do and not do during the events.

“It was truly one of the most empow-ering experiences of my life. It was such an amazing experience,” said Sumner.

Since last year’s triathlon Sumner and Van Driel have continued to train for this years events.

“We’ve done boot camp three times a week and all kinds of things and we’ve become pretty fit because neither of us was very fit a year ago,” said Sumner.

“I’ve had to work pretty hard because things just aren’t as easy when you’re 40. I wish I’d discovered this when I was 20. But better to discover it late than not at all.”

This year on August 15, five staff mem-bers from Westmount Elementary took part in the triathlon. Sumner said the amount of support they gave each other was wonderful. She also gushed about Deanne and what the experience has done for her.

“I just can’t speak highly enough of Deanne, I went to her at the banquet and told her she has truly changed my life.”

Marian Cook also took part in the tri-athlon and found it to be a great experi-ence.

“It was a great event, well organized and a great experience. Special thanks needs to be extended to all the volun-teers and that “special little person” on the run route who was respectfully ask-ing the participants if they wanted to be sprayed with water. What a fantastic treat,” said Cook.

Since competing in her first triathlon, Sumner has taken part in every one she possibly can. It’s something she plans to continue doing as long as she can, and she compared the anticipation of this year’s triathlon to Christmas.

“For me it was like Christmas day, I had been looking forward to it since last year. I knew last year I was going to reg-ister for this year. And it was, it was like Christmas, it was just fun from the min-ute I woke up. I’m kind of sad because that was what I was looking forward to most this summer and now it’s over,” said Sumner.

She managed to shave 15 minutes off of her time from last year, finishing in an hour and 45 minutes. She said it doesn’t matter if you’re an ironman competitor or a beginner; the Strathmore Women’s Triathlon fits everybody.

Empowerment is what it’s all about, at least according to Deanne Jabs, race director for the Strathmore Women’s Triathlon. On August 15, 370 women gathered together to take part in the eighth annual triathlon.

“Its not really a race, we call it more of an empowering event, because it’s really empowering to finish a triath-lon,” said Jabs.

“It’s to encourage women, because women are often intimidated by events that have a lot of men. It’s nice to have a women’s only environment, where they are not intimidated by competi-tive men.”

The women’s triathlon is not a com-petitive event according to Jabs; the main goal is crossing the finish line.

The women were mainly from Cal-gary and surrounding Towns, with one woman coming in from Winnipeg to take part.

“We started it here because this is a beautiful location, a great biking area and its nice to have it in a small com-munity,” said Jabs.

The triathlon started with a 500m swim, then a 20-kilometre bike ride followed by a five-kilometre run. Some of the women walk the five kilometres instead of running.

“You don’t want to have people swimming last just in case someone drowns after being tired from biking and running,” said Jabs. “No one has ever drowned, but you just look at something like a swim (first) and bik-ing is the next highest risk of the three and then the run.”

Participants ranged from ages 16 to 63. This year a relay was introduced, which had a 10-year-old swimming in it. Jabs said the relay was exciting be-cause all of the relay participants went head to head. For those doing the tri-athlon, there were different groups who went at different times. When one swimmer exited the pool another would jump in so that it was a contin-uous feed. The route changed a little this year to incorporate some of the new bike paths.

“The reason I put this event on, is because my life has totally changed from triathlon and I want everybody to have that feeling. It’s very empowering and very gratifying,” said Jabs. She and her volunteers do not participate in the Strathmore triathlon, but she said she does take part in others.

For over half of the participants, this was their first triathlon. Jabs said some women may train all year but many are at home with kids or busy with work, and they fit in workouts and training where they can.

“We have yet to have someone who couldn’t finish. Most people finish and go ‘wow I did it’. Most people surprise themselves that they can actually do it,” said Jabs.

Water and sports drinks were pro-vided to participants to help keep them hydrated and after the last wom-en crossed the line there was a ban-quet. In the past all the women who took part were given a flower finisher medal. This year Jabs provided all of the women with the medal in the form of a charm, so they can wear them in-stead of tucking a medal away into a drawer.

Every Tuesday and Thursday af-ternoon a group of seniors strap on their pad-ding, lace up their skates and hit the ice. Pete Greene plays at the Fam-ily Centre twice a week for an hour in Pensioners Puck Hockey. Greene is 80-years-old and has been playing for the past five or six years after his friend Al Brown talked him into it.

Greene used to

play hockey when he was younger but quit back in 1962. His doctor and some of his friends are a little amazed he is still able to hit the ice.

“I’m just an old guy learning from the young guys. I can’t skate fast enough, that’s a primary issue. I’m average on the other stuff,” said Greene.

There are no goalies in his game. Instead there are two targets placed in the net. One is high and the other is low and

to score a goal a target must be hit. The age range for the players is from 60-years-old to 80 and they try to keep it competitive without risking any injuries. Some of the players may not be as strong at skating, while oth-ers may have mi-nor puck handling capabilities but the team doesn’t let it deter them.

“We try to bal-ance it out. We want to keep it as competitive as we can,” said Greene.

For Greene it’s about getting in some good exer-cise while spend-ing time with peo-ple he likes.

“I enjoy the guys mostly and it’s nice to see if I can stand up longer than the time I did before.” Not many people would strap on skates at his age but Greene plans to continue playing as long as he can. We should all hope that at 80-years-old we too can still hit the ice, or do what-ever it is we have always loved to do.

Age is not a factor

Pete Greene, 80, has been playing Pensioners Puck Hockey for the past five to six years. He can be seen on the ice at the Family Centre every Tuesday and Thursday, where he plays for an hour.

Jordan Arbuthnott recently went to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming. Arbuthnott has been a part of the Alberta Finals for the High School Rodeo, but this was the first year he had a chance to go to the Nationals.

He was there from July 18-24. There were only three other teens in the prov-ince who were picked to go. Arbuthnott was the only one in the area who had been picked to go show off his bull rid-ing skills.

“It was pretty exciting there,” said Ar-buthnott. Unfortunately he was bucked off of his two bulls, but that didn’t dim the trip for him.

“It was worth it,” said Arbuthnott. The experience alone was exciting and though this young bull rider can’t go back next year, he plans to keep rid-ing. Because he recently graduated high school, he no longer applies for the high school rodeo circuit but plans to use the experience gained from it in the future.

“I want to do it as a career. Hopeful-ly everything goes well throughout the winter and everything,” said Arbuthnott.

He plans to continue practicing and riding and would like to join the pro rodeo circuit next year if he’s able. This year at Heritage Days, local Mark Johan-sen won the bull riding event, and next year Arbuthnott may be that local.
