As you know, this past week we resumed daily Masses indoors and it looked a little different from before the pandemic. I was present for most of the daily Masses and I want to personally thank each of you who attended for your cooperation and willingness to follow the directives that are now in place. Thank You! These directives are in place to promote the safety and well-being for all those present. However, I want to remind you of the following directives and ask for your continued cooperation.
• Church doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of Mass and close immediately after Mass.• Face masks are required to enter the church and are required to be worn while in the church.• Hand sanitizer is available at the doors of the church; please use as you enter and leave.• Social distancing of six feet must be maintained from anyone not of the same household.• Pews in each church are labeled as either “A” or “B” and only “A” pews or “B” pews are to be
used for a particular Mass. For Holy Trinity, “A” pews will be used on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and “B” pews will be used on Tuesday and Thursday. For Saint Malachy, “A” pews will be used on Thursday and Saturday and “B” pews will be used on Friday. For Saint Mary, Help of Christians, “A” pews will be used on Monday and Wednesday and “B” pews will be used on Tuesday.
If you would like to be notified in the event of a possible COVID-19 exposure, please bring with you a paper with your name, address and phone number on it and place it in the basket located in the church. You will need to do this for every daily Mass you attend.
Some of you have asked if there is a limit on the number of people that can attend a particular Mass. The answer is 25% of the seating capacity. In terms of numbers, the limit would be 137 people for Holy Trinity; 150 people for Saint Malachy; and 124 for Saint Mary, Help of Christians. For the next few weeks, all public Saturday evening and Sunday Masses will continue in the parking lots. We will keep you updated on when some of these Masses will move indoors.
All individuals vulnerable to COVID-19 and all who are sick are asked to please stay home. Please visit archangelgabrielparish.org/sunday for resources on how to pray from home.
Together, let’s continue to pray to our Lord for an end to this pandemic. May God bless you and stay safe!
Publicly scheduled Mass may be moved back outdoors — specifically if sanitization becomes too challenging or public health restrictions are not followed.

Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.
R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness.The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works.R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season;you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works.The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

This spring’s pandemic robbed us of our public celebrations of Holy Week, including:
• The sacrament of Confirmation, planned for Archangel Gabriel that week with Bishop Waltersheid;
• The Chrism Mass, from which we get holy oils to be used through the year in baptisms, confirmations, and anointings of the sick;
• The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, commemorating our Lord’s institution of the priesthood and the sacrament of the Eucharist;
• The Good Friday observance of our Lord’s perfect sacrifice.• Our celebrations of our Lord’s resurrection on Easter Sunday and the
following Sundays.
We’ve begun to recover. We resumed public Masses outdoors. Our confirmations resumed last week, albeit with me instead of the Bishop. Bishop Zubik this week celebrates the Chrism Mass. All these can be understood as revivals of our shared celebration of priesthood. Even Confirmation is a strengthening of the Spirit so that we can share in the priestly, prophetic, and royal offices of Jesus Christ.
Priesthood is about sacrifice, turning things from earthly purposes toward God. The word “priest” comes from the ancient Greek word for “elder,” linking age to reaching our ultimate purpose. But from the 1st century of Christianity, we reserved “priest” for senior clergy who officiate at the sacrifice of the Mass. We call clergy of other religions “priests” if and only if they offer sacrifices appropriate to those religions.
There’s a sense in which all Christians are priests. We all offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, prayer, and penance, for our own salvation and for the welfare of others. We call this “the priesthood of the baptized.” Even our participation at Mass is an exercise of this kind of priesthood.
But not all sacrifices are equal. The only one that really counts is the sacrifice of Jesus, who in wholehearted love and obedience gave his life to the Father for our sake. All other sacrifices take their meaning and power from the sacrifice of Jesus, our one true High Priest.
At his command, the sacrifice of Jesus is made available to us in the sacrifice of the Mass. You could think of it as Jesus bringing himself to us, or Jesus bringing us to him in a space-and-time-travel sort of mystery. Either way, it’s an opportunity for us to be in attendance at that moment in which the whole world was saved and made holy. The sacrifice of the Mass is offered by Jesus, but in a secondary sense by the ordained priest, who has been authorized to represent Jesus in the sacrifice.

Faith Formation UpdateSteve Swank (Coordinator of Faith Formation, pro tem)
Safety is always a critical concern when planning our faith formation ministry. Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, Family Catechesis will be offered both in-person and virtually in the fall. For virtual instruction, the in-person sessions will be livestreamed so that families can participate remotely and in real time. Families will make their selection of in-person or virtual instruction in early September.
Faith Formation at AGP is scheduled to start as follows:EDGE – Wednesday, October 7Fam Cat Matthew Section – Sunday, September 27Fam Cat Mark Section – Sunday, October 4Fam Cat Luke Section – Sunday, October 11Fam Cat John Section – Sunday, October 18
To see the complete schedules for the year, go to archangelgabrielparish.org/children and scroll down to “Faith Formation Files and Forms.” If you have questions, please reach out to me at [email protected].
We extend a major thank you to Diana Mosur for her many years of catechetical service to our parish. After 41 years, Diana is stepping away from children’s catechesis and wants to thank the many families who have touched her life over the years. Diana is excited about the next thing God has in store for her as she continues to serve God through Archangel Gabriel Parish.

The next principle is The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers. When Catholic immigrants arrived in our country beginning in the second half of the 1800’s, they had to find work to sustain their lives. Most of the time the work that was available to them was the hardest labor, and the wages they earned were at the bottom of the pay scale. In the mills, mines and factories, building cities like New York and Chicago, and doing the work no one else wanted, they were subject to inhumane working conditions, often detrimental to their health and well-being.
In his encyclical, Centesimus Annus, Pope John Paul II brought forward the original papal letter of Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum, written in 1891, to address the plight of workers. Subtitled, “On the Conditions of Labor,” Leo articulated the Church’s response to the social conflict that had arisen in wake of capitalism and industrialization. Child labor and exploitation of the poor were rampant in industrialized nations. The Church’s call for just wages, a limit to working hours and the right of workers to organize led to reforms.
Catholic teaching proclaims that the economy must serve people and not the other way around. Work is not only a way to make a living, it is also participation in the work of creation which belongs to God. Work, therefore, is holy, and as such, the dignity of work must be respected, and the rights of workers honored.
In Laudato Si, Pope Francis wrote, “Work should be the setting for this rich personal growth, where many aspects of life enter into play: creativity, planning for the future, developing our talents, living out our values, relating to others, giving glory to God.”

New Church HymnalsDr. Vincent Rone (Director of Music)
Friends, I’m writing to update you about our music ministry. We’ve been striving to keep music a relevant, consistent presence within the liturgy – in the streaming and parking-lot Masses. The clergy, staff, and cantors have been extremely flexibile and helpful throughout these times, thanks be to God. As our traditional music program lay temporarily dormant, we have some excellent opportunities to implement changes originally intended to occur after the merger.
I, therefore, have met with laity, staff, and clergy over the past few months. In order to unify our voices in song, we have decided on a common parish hymnal: Worship IV by GIA Publications. The hymnal has some historical roots with St. Malachy and currently serves Holy Trinity Church. It also contains hymns, canticles, the three-year lectionary readings, and musical settings of the Psalms all rolled into one.
Purchase of these hymnals for Sts. Malachy and Mary churches requires a one-time expense, as opposed to annual subscription renewal fees for St. Malachy’s Breaking Bread and St. Mary’s Daily Reading, as shown in the figures below.
Current Annual Expenses:Breaking Bread (St. Malachy) - $5,600/yr
Daily Reading (St. Mary) - $2,500/yrTotal yearly expense: $8,100
__________________________________
One-Time Projected Costs for Common HymnalWorship IV (800 Copies @ $17.50) - $14,000
Lectionary Psalms (30 Cantor Copies @ $35.95) - $1,078.50Worship IV Keyboard Accompaniment (2 Copies @ $120) - $240
Total one-time expense: $15,318.50 The common hymnal investment will pay for itself in under two years and will give our parish some notable relief from yearly expenditures. I welcome your questions or thoughts, so please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call my office at 412-787-2140 x118. Thank you so much for helping Archangel Gabriel Parish continue in God’s work to make disciples in Christ.
