The Billings Clinic Classic returns this year with a raffle, silent auction and seven golf

events. Your participation and support of the 2021 Classic will support a $3.5 million

capital campaign for the construction of a new family centered, state-of-the-art Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Billings Clinic. The Billings Clinic NICU opened 22 years ago,

and since then technology and the delivery of care have changed dramatically. One of

the biggest changes over the years has been the increasing integration of families into

the care of their babies. There is evidence that parents are critically important to a baby’s

wellbeing while in the NICU, and when they are present, the outcomes are improved,

costs are reduced, and there is greater parent and staff satisfaction. The infants cared for

today are more unstable and critically ill than in the past. The smallest among them stay

for an average of 90 to 100 days, and 25 percent of the babies come to Billings Clinic

through the transport of its highly trained MedFlight team.

The most common reasons babies are admitted to the NICU include premature birth,

respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, and neonatal abstinence syndrome, which is when a

baby is withdrawing from certain drugs they were exposed to in the womb prior to birth.

The specially trained staff at Billings Clinic’s NICU, on-site 24 hours a day, includes four

neonatologists, neonatal nurses, pediatric specialists, occupational therapists, physical

therapists, pharmacist, lactation consultants, and respiratory therapists.

In its current configuration, care areas are stationed in open bays with curtains without

internal walls and doors, which makes noise very difficult to control. Privacy during this

challenging time for families is minimal, and there is no natural light given the NICU’s

current location in the center of the Family Birth Center. Supplies and equipment are

often stored away from the NICU, as there is not adequate storage space in the unit. This

lack of space has the greatest impact on the parents, making it difficult to comfortably

stay with their sick child and requiring them to leave the unit to use the restroom or get a

drink of water.

Your gifts will help to create a greatly improved patient and family experience, bring

in natural lighting to promote healing, enhance patient and family privacy, create

dedicated family space for overnight stays with a private restroom, outfit the NICU

with updated technology and equipment, and build dedicated space for supplies

and equipment.

Fighter Pilot for a DayYour flight will begin with one to two hours

of ground school where we will cover emergency egress, use of ejection

seats, and straining techniques used to

counter the effects of high-G

maneuvers. The actual flight will last approximately 45-60 minutes and will include whatever type of flight profile you desire. This can be a simple tour, a fast low-level strafing run, or over the top aerobatics. The flight will be catered to the individual with an emphasis on having fun. You will even have the opportunity to fly the airplane if you desire.You will be flying in an Aero Vodochody L-39 “Albatross.” The Albatross is a light air to ground jet fighter plane and trainer. The Albatross has a max speed of Mach .85 and can maneuver at up to 8 positive Gs and 4 negative Gs. This airplane was built in Czechoslovakia and flown in Russia.Participants must be in good general health and not of unusual proportions. In general, if you are under 6’3” and weigh less than 250 lbs, there shouldn’t be a problem. Also, you must be able to climb a ladder to get into and out of the airplane.The pilot will be Troy Downing. Troy is a former HH60-G “Pave Hawk” helicopter flight engineer in the US Air Force/Air National Guard with over 8,000 hours of total flight time in both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. Mr. Downing has participated in numerous combat sorties, medevacs, and combat rescues in southern Afghanistan. Our Current nicu

Neonatology services are more sophisticated than ever before. We are in desperate need

of a redefined space to match the world class care provided by our team to

the tiniest of patients, while allowing for the best

family experience.

Our NICU opened 22 years ago, and since then, technology and the delivery of care have changed dramatically. One of the biggest changes over the years has been the increasing integration of families into the care of their babies. There is evidence that parents are the “active ingredient” and when they are present, the outcomes are improved, costs are reduced and there is greater parent and staff satisfaction.

The infants we are caring for are more unstable and critically ill than in the past. The smallest among them stay on average 90 to 100 days, with 25% of the babies coming to Billings Clinic through the transport of our highly trained MedFlight Team. The top reasons the babies are admitted to the NICU include premature birth, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, and neonatal abstinence syndrome which is when a baby is withdrawing from certain drugs they were exposed to in the womb prior to birth. Our specially-trained staff, on site 24 hours a day, includes 4 neonatologists, neonatal nurses, pediatric specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, pharmacist, lactation consultants, and respiratory therapists.

In our current configuration, isolettes are stationed in open bays with curtains, and the absence of internal walls and doors make noise very difficult to control. Privacy during this challenging time for families is non-existent, and there is no natural light given the NICU’s current location in the center of the Family Birth Center. Supplies and equipment are often stored three floors below, as there is not adequate storage space in the unit. The lack of space has the greatest impact on the parents. Imagine not having the ability to comfortably stay with your incredibly sick baby and having to leave the unit to use the restroom or get a drink of water.
