August 16, 2018 Stewart Middle’s football team has not lost a game since the 2012 season For the record, the Stewart Middle football team is 40-0 and counting … and don’t count out the Bulldogs on extending their record streak with yet another undefeated season. That’s be- cause most of the players are returning as eighth-graders. “We won predominantly with seventh-graders last year and we’ve got a lot of those kids coming back,” noted coach Greg Mathis, a former Zephyrhills High assistant who enters his fourth season at the Zephyrhills-based middle school. Stewart has simply been dominant on the east side of the county for quite some time. The team has not lost a game since 2012, has five straight unbeaten seasons and captured six of the past seven Pasco County Middle School Athletic Conference East championships. Former coach Norm Scheuerman led the team to four of those titles in that impressive run and stepped down following the 2015 season to spend more time with his family. He remem- bers those championship teams fondly and is proud of the long- time winning streak. “I find it to be amazing that they’ve been able to do it,” he said. “It’s a combination of work, effort and luck.” There have been close wins and blowouts along the way, but the final game of the 2016 season nearly saw the streak halt- ed. Stewart held on to defeat Weightman 56-50 in a six-overtime thriller at Bulldog Stadium. Both teams came into that game un- defeated. “A good night,” is how Mathis remembers it and “the actual fact that those kids refused to give up. It was real impressive to me.” Last year, Stewart capped an unbeaten season with its most dominating performance by routing Centennial 54-0. “We just played hard and they were determined,” Mathis said, adding that he actually tries to downplay the streak. “I try to keep it down, because what I don’t want is for the kids to lose focus. Of course you want to win every game, but you’ve got to play with character; win or lose.” As for this year’s squad, quarterback Jaylin Mathis, the coach’s son, will lead the offense and have many options with a handful of players who can line up in the backfield or at the receiver slots. That group includes Sebastian Perez, Larence Graham, D.J. Pickett, Geoffrey Mathis (the coach’s other son), Bryson Rodgers, Kenneth McCullough and Justin Hicks. “All of them have great speed and good hands,” the coach said. Other targets, when they’re not blocking on running plays, are tight ends Jelani Cannon and Thomas Puhek. Up front as blockers on the line will be center Jakavious Clower, Calob Dur- ham, Xavier Salgado and Jackson Willis. On the other side of the ball, anchoring the defensive line at nose tackle and end are Jackson and Thomas, respective- ly. HAVE YOU HAD TO STOP DOING THINGS YOULOVE BECAUSE OF PAIN?

Sports are a great tool to teach young people various lessons. Sports can instill a sense of teamwork and responsibil-ity in youngsters while promoting a physically active lifestyle that can benefit kids into adulthood. The Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention estimates that roughly 30 million children participate in youth sports in the United States each year. Unfortunately, many of those young athletes suffer injuries while par-ticipating in sports. Injuries might be seen as an almost inevitable byproduct of participating in sports, but the CDC notes that more than half of all sports injuries in children are preventable. Parents and children can work together to pre-vent injuries. • Speak with your young athlete about pain. Johns Hopkins Medicine recommends parents discuss pain with their young athletes, encour-aging them to speak up and seek help if they feel pain or if any part of their bodies does not feel right after playing sports. •Emphasize safety during practice. It’s easy to overlook sports practices when consid-ering sports-related injuries, but Safe Kids USA notes that 62 percent of organized sports-re-lated injuries occur during practice. In spite of that, Safe Kids reports that one-third of parents do not have their children take the same safety

precautions dur-ing practice that they would during a game. Parents and coaches can empha-size to children that sports safety should be a priority during both practice and games. •Get a sports physical. Preseason physicals are typical-ly required for scholastic athletes,

but that might not be so for recreational athletes. Even if leagues don’t require sports physicals, Johns Hopkins advises parents to schedule such exams anyway. Such examinations can determine if kids are fit to play and may uncover injuries or conditions that may make kids vulnerable to injury. •Encourage adequate rest. Johns Hopkins notes that the most common injuries among young athletes are overuse injuries that involve soft tissue. These injuries affect bone, muscle, ligaments, and/or tendons. Overuse injuries can lead to stress fractures characterized by a lack of swelling and feelings of pain and tender-ness during movement. Encourage rest between practices, games and events, and make sure to schedule an offseason for young athletes so their bodies have time to recuperate before the next season. Young athletes’ injuries are often prevent-able, especially when parents and children work together and communicate about any aches or pains kids might be feeling.

most dedicated coaches, be-cause he’s out there with the kids every day,” Klotz said of Van Patten. “He’s such a good swing coach, in general; and he’s such a good mechanical and technical coach. I think he’s doing a good job in expos-ing that to the kids too.” As far as the Bulldogs competing for conference and district championships this

upcoming season, the coaches are not alone in their optimis-tic outlooks. Count key returner Tristan Charter-McCool, the lone senior and most experi-enced player who is expect-ed to slot into the No. 1 role, among the team’s believers. “I think we’ve got a chance to make the states this year,” Charter-McCool said of what would be a fi rst for a Zephyrhills boys golf team. As the only senior, he

welcomes a leadership role for this year’s squad, saying, “I see myself helping out the team and having a good posi-tive attitude. In golf, the most important thing is attitude.” Part of that positive atti-tude stems from the current group buying into the team concept, which is not always a sure thing in such an individu-al sport as golf. Ogilbee, a 2018 graduate who is back helping out as an assistant, explained the concept. “We’re individuals play-ing for the team,” he reasoned, noting that a golfer still must to the best he can for himself to help the team. Aside from Klotz and Ogil-bee, local golfer Carl Gennaro is helping out. Rounding out this year’s Zephyrhills team are: juniors Tristan Payne and Roddy Kight; sophomores Trevor Myers and Christian Hupp; along with freshmen John Helms and Evan Drink-water.

The secondary will consist primarily of a combination of the running backs and receiv-ers with those playing less on off ense more like-ly to get some playing time on defense. Jaylin Thomas will not see much time on defense, rea-soned coach Mathis, “because I really want to keep him fresh. He can really get the ball down-fi eld.”

A new wrinkle in the middle school foot-ball program this season is the addition of sixth-graders on rosters. That change has been ap-proved by the Florida High School Athletic As-sociation. Mathis said that while teams still will pri-marily line up eighth-graders and seventh-graders, he welcomes the arrival of sixth-grad-ers and would not hesitate to give one of those talented young players some time on the fi eld if it was warranted. Stewart opens the season on Sept. 4 with a home game against Centennial at Bulldog Sta-dium.

Kretschmar raised $1,000 in just the fi rst weekend he started selling the wristbands. He stated that as of Aug. 14, he had sold 700 of them. He hasn’t even started selling them at the school, yet. The wristbands are orange and black and say, “Zack Bites the Bone but Not Alone.” A Facebook page that can be found at www.facebook.com/ZackFightsTheBone/ is where people that want to contribute can fi nd more information about how to purchase the wristbands or t-shirts designed to support Zack. They can also visit the website www.Zackfi ghtsthebone.com. At the Aug. 24 pep rally in the gymnasium at ZHS, Kretschmar, Zack’s father Doyle, ZHS soccer coach John Soellner and senior cross-country runner Seth Pelfrey will all be shav-ing their heads to show solidarity. Kretschmar invited four local barbers to perform the hair-cutting. Fox 13 jumped on the story and will be broadcasting from the pep rally. Wristbands will also be for sale. The bad news hit home for some of Zack’s teammates. Nathan Bragg, now a promising sophomore runner for ZHS, remembers run-ning with Zack on the 4x800 meter relay during

track season and remembers Zack struggling through both cross country and track seasons, prior to his diagnosis. “I remember he would tell me his back was hurting,” Bragg said. “He would have to walk some races because the pain was too much to bear. I remember him having to step out of workouts in track season.” When the mass was discovered near Springfi eld’s lungs, the diagnosis followed; so did the support from his team. “Zack is really a friend to me, I would do anything to help him out,” Bragg said. Incoming freshman Madison Poe didn’t know Zack as well but could identify with what he was going through. “I lost my grandmother to cancer in 2016,” Poe said. “I can relate to his situation in a way, I just think it’s a positive thing for us to do to support him.” The team is still pressing on. They have Monday workouts where they pound the hills on the trail just off of US 301. Their numbers are way up from previous years. The team’s fi rst meet is Aug. 25 at Hol-loway Park in Lakeland. They host their own meet called the Colt Bolt at Colt Creek State Park in Lakeland on Sept. 22. Then the 40th An-nual Rattlesnake Run is Oct. 20.

CROSS COUNTRY: From Page 1B

Above: Sophomore Mason Bragg is the first to top one of the hills during a Monday workout.

Head cross country coach James Kretschmar started using the hills on the trail next to US Hwy 301 last season to create a new kind of workout for his runners.

Above: The 2018 cross country team takes stretches before a Monday evening workout near the Lowe’s off US 301.

Below: Numbers are up on both boys and girls teams this season.
