94TH BULKLEY VALLEY EXHIBITION | 3

It’s hard to believe it is fall fair time again! The theme “A Treasure Chest of Bulkley Valley’s Best” is very appropriate as we have so much of the best of everything here in the valley.

It’s amazing that 94 years ago the fair began – a time for old friends and neighbours to get together, who probably didn’t get the chance to see one another very often.

It’s such a pleasure to see the 4-H members with their animals – let’s face it, these are some of our future farmers. My wife and I both belonged to a 4-H Club in Nova Scotia. This was some of the best training we have ever received.

Many thanks to all the volunteers, without them, the fair would not be possible.

On behalf of the council and staff of the Village of Telkwa, we wish you every success.

Sincerely,Carman GrafMayor, Telkwa

I would like welcome residents and visitors alike to this year’s fair. The theme for 2013, “A Treasure Chest of Bulkley Valley’s Best,” refl ects how proud we are of what we produce right here at home.

From produce, livestock and other agricultural products, to music, art, and crafts, this valley prides itself on quality and uniqueness.

This is a big year for Smithereens as we celebrate our Town’s centennial: 100 years since our town was fi rst established back in 1913.

For 94 of those 100 years, the Fall Fair has been a hallmark event for our community and the entire valley. Today, one can hardly imagine the Bulkley Valley without the Fall Fair.

Once again, the organizers have done an amazing job. On behalf of Council, I would like to extend our thanks to all of the volunteers who make the fair so successful each year.

I look forward to seeing you down at the fairgrounds!

Taylor BachrachMayor, Smithers

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 94th Bulkley Valley Exhibition – A Treasure Chest of Bulkley Valley’s best!

Our treasure chest includes clean, pure water and uncontaminated soils that support a strong agricultural tradition in the Bulkley Valley, one that I know we all feel proud of. The fall fair is an opportunity to embrace this history and celebrate another element of our treasure chest –the friends and family from near and afar. Whether you come to strengthen those relationships, enter the competitions, participate in 4-H, or enjoy the music, rodeo or other events, there is something for everyone at the BV Exhibition.

Congratulations to the organizers and volunteers that work so hard to make this event a success. On your behalf, I will continue to encourage the provincial government to support the BV Exhibition and our agriculture sector that have our local waters and soil at their base.

I look forward to enjoying time at the fairgrounds with you all.

All the best,Doug DonaldsonMLA, Stikine

On behalf of the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association Board of Directors I would like to welcome you to the 94th annual Bulkley Valley Exhibition! A Treasure Chest of Bulkley Valley’s Best is what you will find showcased at this year’s Exhibition.

Our Staff and Volunteers have been hard at work to bring all your favourite exhibition

traditions: hall exhibits, horse, livestock and 4-H shows, antique tractor display, and the Kids Dog Show just to name a few!

They’ve also raised the bar with a new Family Zone & Petting Zoo which the kids will be sure to love; as well as brought in a fantastic set of Headliners to entertain on the Claude Dohler Stage.

As we celebrate the entire valley’s treasures, our sponsors and volunteers are at the top of our list. It is the incredible support from the community that makes our exhibition the tradition it has become and we thank you for all your generous support over the last 94 years! See you at the Fair!

Lindsay HeerBVAIA President

Welcome to “A Treasure Chest of Bulkley Valley’s Best” at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition.

This year our volunteers have been working extra hard to bring you the best show in the north. Our Division Coordinators and their committees work all year planning each division and show.

This year we hope you will plan to stay at the Exhibition into the evening and enjoy the great line up of entertainment we have scheduled. From headliners to local talent, the Claude Dohler Stage is a don’t miss place to be!

Many of the traditional favourites are back and are the heart of the BV Exhibition. Our agricultural exhibits in the hall feature all the treasures of the Bulkley Valley. Knitting to jam, photography to quilts.

The Smithers Rodeo Club is back again with their Bull-a-rama and BCRA Rodeo. Our Livestock, Light Horse and Draft Horse shows are a longtime tradition.

We would like to congratulate 4-H Canada for 100 years of helping youth build confidence, learn new skills and become leaders of tomorrow. Be sure to attend the 4-H Auction and Pavilion.

Our many sponsors and funders, local, provincial and national, individual and corporate, continue to support the BV Exhibition each year with their financial and in-kind sponsorships and grants. Without their support we would not be able

to host this annual community event. Thank you for your continued support!

See you at the Fair! Who knows what treasures you might find?

The BV 4-H District is made of three clubs, Topley, Quick Community and Evelyn Club.

The 4-H program provides young people with an opportunity to learn how to become productive, self-assured adults who can make their community and country a good place in which to live. This is fostered through project and program work, experiences with their 4-H club members and leaders and their participation in district, regional and even provincial programs.

The goal of the 4-H program is youth development. The objectives of 4-H clubs are knowledge, leadership, citizenship and personal development.

4-H stands for head, heart, hands and health. (The 4-H pledge describes the significance of the four H’s.)

The philosophy of the 4-H

program is explained by the following;

Motto: Learn to do by Doing.Mission: Inspire, educate and

develop youth into empowered community leaders.

Vision: The youth focused, community based organization of choice in B.C.

As a 4-H’er, you can have the feeling of accomplishment that comes from trying and succeeding at something new – whether it’s fixing a small engine, knitting a sweater, training an animal or presenting a speech or demonstration to an audience.

Opportunities include various provincial and

regional programs that members can attend to visit new places and make new friends! Senior 4-H members can also apply for scholarships and earn External Credits for Grade 11 and 12. See what kind of opportunities 4-H can offer you today!

Visit the 4-H Pavilion on site at the BV Exhibition located in the livestock ring area!

The Draft Horse Show starts on Friday, Aug. 23 at noon with Halter classes. Breeds showing include Percherons, Belgians, Shires and Clydesdales.

Get out bright and early for Wagon and Cart classes starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 followed by the Log Skidding Competition. The Log Skid requires the teamster to skillfully drive his team through a course of pylons while pulling a log as well as finishing with a series of stops which are measured exactly to the inch.

The main event in the afternoon is the Single Horse Pull to see which single draft horse can pull the most weight. This will be followed by a crowd favourite, the bareback draft horse barrel race!

The Teamster Competition starts off the program on Sunday, Aug. 26. All participating teams

must pull the same wagon through a series of obstacles and the teamster is judged on his skills. This is followed by various wagon classes including a Unicorn Hitch, Four-horse and Six-horse Hitch.

The Chore Team Fun Class is a real crowd pleaser. Come and cheer on the teams and their teamsters when they collect

eggs, hay and firewood, all while balancing a full pail of water!

The BC Championship Horse Pull starting Sunday at 1 p.m. always draws a big crowd. Up to 18 teams are expected to come from all over the northwest. The teams weigh between 3,200 to 4,300 lbs and compete to see who can pull the most pounds over their own weight.

Canadian pop country trio High Valley is made up of brothers Brad, Bryan and Curtis Rempel.

Growing up in a small rural community near the town of La Crete, Alberta, life on their farm was dominated by faith, family, hard work and lots of country music. The brothers formed High Valley before any of them were even a teenager, and as a result have played many shows wherever they could.

They recorded for the first time in Nashville in 2001 and released a debut album, the self-titled, High Valley, in the

fall of 2010. Their second album, Broken Borders, was named Album of the Year at the 2007 GMA Canada Covenant Awards, while the song Back to You was awarded Country Song of the Year.

In 2011 the band won five GMA Canada Covenant Awards, including Artist of the Year and Group of the Year. With their third album, Love Is a Long Road, released in June 2012, buzz was generated in the US and in Canada alike.

They have also just been nominated for 2 CCMA awards “group of the year” and “interactive artist of the year”

At age fourteen, Faber’s dad bought him a drum kit which Faber promised to practice on every day.

Faber may not have kept his promise, but that’s because he put down the drum sticks to become frontman and founding member of Faber Drive, one of Canada’s hottest young bands.

After beating out more than 500 other artists from across Canada to take first place in a radio competition, Faber Drive started opening for notable acts such as Nickelback, Simple Plan and Hedley.

With the release of their pop-punk infused debut album Seven Second Surgery, Faber Drive hit number one on Much Music, saw three top ten radio singles and was nominated for the Juno award for Best New Artist in 2008.

However, the Faber Drive that appears on its sophomore album can’T keEp A SecrEt is a band that has progressed beyond the Juno nominees of 2008.

Bulkley ValleyWonders of the

For over 20 years, Clinton W. Gray has been blending magic, music and mockery into high-energy, interactive comedy shows around the world.

Whether entertaining corporate CEOs at hospitality cocktail parties or college students at campus nightclubs, Clinton’s speciality is the ability to engage every spectator and literally bring the entire audience into the show!

With signature illusions like the Magic Telephone Hotline, the Cowboy Card Trick, and Regurgitated Balloon Poodle, it’s no wonder people say Clinton’s show is unlike any they’ve ever seen. With his charismatic and fun personality, he doesn’t merely fool audiences – he entertains them.

A wild combination of author, inventor, speaker, performer, and TV personality – look out, Freddy Fusion has become a dominant force in the science community!

E n v i s i o n i n g current trends and enhancing the enrichment of children at an early age has been the focus of Freddy Fusion’s “ O u t r e a c h Program” into schools worldwide.

Freddy Fusion turns the impossible into the possible, and breaks down the unexplainable into a format kids are able to download, absorb, and understand.

Kids from four to twelve are welcome to be in the show for free and compete in a fast-paced, action-packed, pedal tractor pull.

Each tractor has been modified for heavy pulling and is attached to a weight transfer sled. The sled is filled with a certain amount of weight which is determined by the age of each participant. The four-year-olds start with 25 pounds and the twelve-year-olds start with 250 pounds. As kids pedal down the path, the weight in the bucket transfers up the sled and makes it harder to pedal.

On the StageRed City

Red City is the newest brand of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) coming out of Vancouver, B.C. Amaris and Letty are the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers of EDM, set to take the world by storm with their catchy female vocals, hyped-up raps and music that will draw anyone onto the dance floor.

Originally starting off as the fusion pop/hip hop group The Proper Villains, they had success with their singles Your Heart and Shattered which received radio airplay on The Beat 94.5, The Sun 99.9, Sonic 104.9 and more.

In March 2013, the group decided to take on a new name that represented their love of electronic music and their transformation into a high energy EDM DJ group. They are ready turn every city they hit into a Red City.

Get ready to paint the city red!

David James & Big River

Big River is four musicians from the West Coast of B.C. whose main purpose is to present the recordings of Johnny Cash in the style and with the sound of Johnny Cash himself.

David James is “Almost Johnny Cash” – and nothing could be closer to the truth. Dave and the band are doggedly dedicated to replicating the most authentic Johnny Cash tribute the world has ever seen.

“When our audiences come out to hear us perform we want them to have the thrill of an authentic “Man in Black” show. Not just the words and music, but the full experience.”

The KerplunksThe Kerplunks are multi-award-winning

children’s entertainers bringing high-energy, colourful performances to the stage – with outfits that match!

The Kerplunks play catchy tunes guaranteed to get kids engaged, singing along and joining in on the actions.

Dinah plays the upright bass and really belts it out! She also plays the kazoo like a madwoman! Tina plays the trumpet, trombone, clarinet, baritone and also sings. Watch out for when she busts a rhyme, yo! Phil plays the drums, keeping everyone in time and really likes to “Go Bananas.” Aaron plays the acoustic guitar, sings harmonies and makes great faces.

This three-time JUNO-nominated band provides a unique live performance with a full four-piece multi-instrumental band, playing a variety of upbeat musical styles that even parents enjoy.

Proud to be part of Smithers’success since 1973.

Light Horse ShowOur show kicks off with our Halter

classes Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the Main Show ring with judges Joe Carter and Ben Gumm. Horses are shown “in hand,” meaning that they are led, not ridden, and are judged on their conformation and suitability as breeding stock.

The BV Exhibition Horse Dressage classes will be performing Thursday and Friday mornings at 9 a.m. in the Dressage Ring under the watchful eye of Judge Jill Yonge.

Dressage is a competitive equestrian sport, defined by the International Equestrian Federation as “the highest expression of horse training,” where “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.” At the peak of a dressage horse’s gymnastic development, the horse will respond smoothly to a skilled rider’s minimal aids. The rider will be relaxed and appear effort-free while the horse willingly performs the requested

movement. Dressage is occasionally referred to as “Horse Ballet.”

Trail is a competitive class where horses and riders in western-style attire and horse tack navigate a series of obstacles. Contestants ride the course one at a time. A typical trail course requires horse and rider to open and pass through a small gate while mounted; walk across a fake bridge; cross over a set of rails or logs at a walk, trot or lope; back up, often with a turn while backing; side pass, often over a rail or log; turn on the forehand or hindquarters within a confined area; and tolerate some type of “spooky” obstacle, such as having the rider put on a vinyl raincoat. The horse is asked to perform all three gaits in the process of completing the course.

The BV Exhibition course designer for our trail classes, Jan Ridenoure has worked very hard to challenge our competitors and their horses that will be judged under Joe Carter. Come out and see who is

up to our trail classes challenge on Friday morning.

Reining is a western riding competition where the riders guide the horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. All work is done at the lope. Reining is often described as a Western form of dressage riding, as it requires the horse to be responsive and in tune with its rider, whose aids should not be easily seen, and judges the horse on its ability to perform a set pattern of movements. The horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to completely. A horse that pins his ears, conveying a threat to his rider, refuses to go forward, runs sideways, bounces his rear, wrings his tail in irritation or displays an overall poor attitude is not being guided willingly, and is judged accordingly. Two opportunities to watch. Friday after our trail competition and Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. with Judge Joe

Carter.Driving, when applied to horses,

ponies, mules, or donkeys, is a broad term for hitching equines to a wagon, carriage, cart, sleigh, or other horse-drawn vehicle by means of a harness and working them in this way. Pleasure driving is a horse show class that features light breeds of horses and ponies hitched to a two or four-wheeled show cart. Most classes are judged on the horse’s manners, performance, quality and conformation. Come show your support at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, with fun events in the afternoon. Our judge, Chris Hassel, would be happy to hear the encouraging cheers of spectators.

People unfamiliar with horse shows may be confused by the difference between Hunter classes and Jumper classes. Hunters are judged subjectively on the degree to which they meet an ideal standard of manners, style, and way of going. Conversely, jumper classes are scored objectively, based entirely on a numerical score determined only

by whether the horse attempts the obstacle, clears it, and finishes the course in the allotted time. Jumper classes are held with a course of show-jumping obstacles, including verticals, spreads, double and triple combinations, usually with many turns and changes of direction. The intent is to jump cleanly over a set course within an allotted time. Time faults are assessed for exceeding the time allowance. Jumping faults are incurred for knockdowns and blatant disobedience, such as refusals.

This is always a popular and exciting performance for our spectators. Hunter can be seen on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and Jumper on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. with Judge Jill Yonge.

Gymkhana classes are mounted games which include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole race, keg race, flag race, and pole bending. All of these events are designed to display precise, controlled actions and tight

teamwork between horse and rider at speed, this can be very exciting to watch and allows for some enthusiastic cheers for the spectators to help the horse and rider team beat the clock. You can see the BV Exhibition Gymkhana on Sunday around 1 p.m. in the Main Show Ring.

The challenge is back for its fourth year and this year we are excited to have two ladies and a local trainer. We are looking forward to this new group of trainers and have some new ideas for this challenge.

All the judges are back for another year and we have a

new supply of horses. We like to get horses from different breeders each year, so as to showcase the local area breeders. The horse supply can be a challenge, as not too many breeders have three two-year-olds in one year.

The trainers are here to

showcase their talents and the fact that they are willing to train a horse in this short time in front of an audience is a feat in itself. So please make sure to applaud all their efforts and know it is all about the horse and their capabilities during the show.

Trainer of the North Challenge

Kaylee MillsKaylee is a certifi ed course four

Training Thru Trust apprentice. She started riding around the ranch by herself when she was two years old. She began competing in little britches rodeo at the age of four. She then continued on to qualify in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and breakaway roping. Kaylee has qualifi ed for the Canadians and Nationals in these events for many years, as well as winning the 2008 BSHSRA season leader and year-end champion.

Kaylee has competed in other trainers’ challenges winning the European Junior Trainers’ Challenge in 2009. She also placed third out of sixteen at the Canadian Horse Trainers’ Challenge and in 2012 she beat her two brothers Kyle and Kade in the Sibling Rivalry Challenge at the Farm Fair in Edmonton. Her goal is to help as many people as possible reach their goals with horses, using her dad’s (Doug Mills) program. Kaylee hosts many clinics and camps at the Mills Ranch, as well as other facilities upon request.

Larry WierengaLarry is a local trainer working

in the Smithers are. He has been riding and working with horses for about 30 years now. Larry was raised on a farm in Alberta, that owned horses and used horses in the day to day operation of the farm. When his children got old enough to ride, he started riding with them and resumed working with horses, rediscovering that he really enjoyed working with horses.

He started training horses about 25 years ago and uses a variety of methods picked up along the way adapting them to suit his style of training.

He works with consistency and fairness, giving the horse a chance to understand what he is asking. Larry works from his place on Lower Viewmount training horses for himself and other people.

Larry likes to show as well as train horses and he competes in local shows in Western and Reining classes. Many of the horses he has trained are being shown successfully by people around the valley.

Sarah NewmanSarah was born and raised

on a small Kamloops ranch surrounded by horses. Sarah began riding before she could walk. She was very active in little britches rodeo and high school rodeo. She qualifi ed for Canadians and Nationals all four years in all fi ve high school rodeo events. Sarah started working for Doug and Lynette Mills right out of high school and decided she really wanted to pursue horse training. She really loved Doug’s program and felt she could pursue her dream with this knowledge. Now she is a certifi ed apprentice of Training Thru Trust Program and has been training full time for the last six years. Sarah offers lessons, clinics and training.

There are many people who have made this fair what it is over its 94 year history. Look for the tributes throughout the grounds to honour them.

Behind the Fair Office and in front of the Antique Tractor Display is the newly-named Tomayer Trail in honour of past-president Anita Tomayer who is still to be found working hard on this extraordinary event.

Graeme’s Way along with the Graeme Johnstone Shed were named for Graeme Johnstone and the Johnstone Hall for his wife, Lisbeth, both active members of the Fair Board (Graeme as president) and of the BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions. The Davidson Hall was named for Phyllis Davidson and built with seniors in mind. The rest area is sponsored each year by her family. These great people, who contributed so much, were able to enjoy their tributes as part of the Exhibition.

Claude Dohler’s stage rings with music every year, Herb Dettwiller’s flagpole is right next to that. Not far afield, in front of the Fair Office, is Doris Stahel’s garden, set up as a memorial the year this great volunteer passed away.

Other memorials are harder to see and can’t be visited, but attest to the spirit of our community in the honour they bring. Trophies in just about every division bring names from the past alive. The Bill Kidd Memorial Trophy is given for most points in the Livestock Division. The First President’s Memorial Trophy in memory of Allen Kilpatrick is for

most points, all-round, in the Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers & Grains, Foods, Handicrafts, Boys’ & Girls’ Baking & Hobbies, Special Needs, Arts & Photography, Homemade Wine & Beer, and Textiles Divisions.

In the Beef Division there are trophies in memory of Lowell Davison, George Shuhyta, Mike Vandermeulen and a Brook memorial for Hereford Premier Exhibitor.

4-H honours the Bruhjell family with a memorial fund for showmanship, and trophies in honour of Rita Giddings, L.B. Warner, Graeme Johnstone, Paul Trobak, Dewey Cummins, and Bill & Barb Bryant are given out as well.

In the Johnstone and Davidson Halls you will find the displays for many divisions. Bertha Homenuke is remembered in the vegetable division. You’ll find a Irene’s Crazy Cookie Contest in memory of Irene Hug who delighted so many people over the years with her gifts of cookies. Most points in Baking, Cooking with Honey, Jams & Jellies, and Canned Goods will take home the keeper of the Vyvyan Bradford Memorial Perpetual Trophy. The Dr. L.M. Greene Perpetual Trophy will be claimed by a Women’s Institute display. The Granny Gyger Trophy goes for the most points in Knitting.

In the Lighthorse Division awards will be given in honour of Lexy Kirk in Junior and Senior Dressage, Sherry Motz for Sportsmanship, and Jerry Ridenoure for Sportsmanship in Gymkhana.
