The Lecture:
The study finds compelling points of contentions in comparing both nation-state and Muslim governance in terms of the 1933 Montevideo criteria (territoriality, citizenry, authority, and sovereignty) including elements of history, constitution, Hallaq’s moral predicament with modernity, and difficulties with democracy, secularism, capitalism, and nationalism. To go beyond this comparative conundrum, the study recommends to theoretically look into selected worldviews such as Alexander Wendt’s proposal of a World State theory and various Islamicate civilizational analyses (i.e. from Khaldunian sociological perspective to Şentürk’s Open Civilization thesis) as alternative world orders in order to encompass an inclusive pluralist understanding of units of analysis in the international system/society (nassef.info).
The Lecturer:
Dr. Nassef Adiong graduated his PhD at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey and currently doing his second PhD dissertation for Alliance of Civilizations Institute, an educational affiliate of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, in Istanbul.
