Lisa AaseboAlthough from Vancouver, Lisa has a deep love for the Kootenay’s and

all of its cultural offerings. Lisa began her fascination with this beautiful community while performing for three summer seasons at Fort Steele Heritage Town. In the summer of 2011 she performed for Kimberley Summer Theatre in ‘Lend Me a Tenor’, ‘Secrets every Smart Traveller should know’ and the brand new daytime Platzl shows. Lisa officially took on the role of Artistic Director of The Wildhorse Theatre at Fort Steele Heritage Town and ran a never before attempted, full theatre season! Lisa has now turned her focus to opening her own Children’s Theatre Companies with ‘Creative Monkey’s Children’s Programmes’ for 2-11 year olds, and ‘Theatre Boot Camp’ for 12-17 year olds, right here in the East Kootenays. Lisa has professionally trained in both the Theatre and Musical Theatre Programs at Capilano University in North Vancouver. She has toured Western Canada with 2 seasons of Jubilations Dinner Theatre, performed for over 25 years on stages and film sets throughout ‘The Coast’, and in between, spent many hours teaching and creating theatre for young people in Dance Studios, Rec Centres and Elementary Schools.

Playball is a unique and specialized, age appropriate sports coaching program which teaches physical competence, life skills and school readiness skills for two to eight year olds.

InternatIonally Proven Playball has proven itself in many countries over 25 years to become recognized as a unique and invaluable sports coaching program for young children. Tens of thousands of children in Australia, America, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa are benefiting from the many rewards of the Playball program.

ScIentIfIcally DeSIgneD Program The Playball Program is the result of many years of Research & Development. The Playball Head Office team created the Playball Sports Program by researching the developmental needs of 2 to 8 year olds through consultation with child development professionals. Playball understands the importance of teaching the right skills at the right time, so that children can develop a strong base of foundation skills on which to build. Not only do we understand which activities are best for each age group and developmental stage but Playball’s holistic approach helps children to function in their everyday lives as confident and able individuals. Playball’s objectives are to develop a child in all aspects; physical, emotional, social and intellectual. We use sport as the means to teach all of these essential life skills.

Dane RiesMy name is Dane Ries, I’m 20 years old and have lived in Cranbrook for 14 years. After graduation I’ve been enrolled at the College of the Rockies, and most recently SAIT taking kinesiology courses.

When I was in Calgary I discovered Playball. I have always been quite athletic and involved with sports since I was young. With Playball, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to continue my love of sport by teaching others. I was introduced to Anne Marie and we were able to make a great partnership right off the bat. After my year in Calgary we had kept in touch and thought of bringing Playball to Cranbrook. I couldn’t think of any better idea, I had falling in love with the program and love seeing what it can really do in children’s lives.

Playball Instructor

I’m privileged to be involved for the last 3 years in fostering the Playball Methodology in developing an all rounded child by teaching life skills through sport skills. Playball has been in operation in preschools, kindergartens and sport centers with over 500 students involved. Playball gave me the opportunity to combine my love for sport with my teaching background. The aim of Playball is to teach children competency in the class room, on the playground and on the sports field.

Page 11-20CommunityPitch-in 2013From its modest beginnings in 1967, PITCH-IN CANADA is now leading a multi-faceted approach to “litter” and overall proper waste management practices. These practices include: the 4 R’s, REFUSE - REUSE - REDUCE - RECYCLE, personal

responsibility, community sustainability and beautification. Through the use of education, community participation and partnerships with the corporate and government sectors, PITCH-IN CANADA works with all Canadians interested, to maintain a clean, green and beautiful country. Pitch-In was held in Cranbrook April 21-27 and was a successful event. Local schools participated in cleaning up their school fields and surrounding areas, and many other city residents pitched in to pick-up litter around their neighbourhoods and place of business. Amy Woodland was the winning school that collected the most litter and won a free swim for the whole school at the Aquatic Centre on June 26.Volunteers from the Baha’I Community showed their civic pride by cleaning up several areas of the city including empty lots around Home Depot and Walmart, and all of the Industrial area roads. In total, the group collected 67 bags, 2 boxes full, 4 tires and 5 signs. Way to go, and thank you from the City of Cranbrook!

bumps, jumps & pump track There is a new bike skills park located at Balment Park beside the Viking Skateboard Park. It is free for anyone to use and opened this past May. Children, teens and adults of all ages have been using the new park and enjoying its features. Planning for the bike park began in the fall of 2010. The Cranbrook Bike Skills Park Society was formed in the spring of 2011 and began working with the full support of the City of Cranbrook on location, licensing, insurance, process, etc. The funding drive started in 2012 when successfully acquired a $30,000 grant from Columbia Basin Trust through Cranbrook Community Initiatives. Local businesses donated dirt, equipment, supplies and time to allow the Society to spend two days installing a water line and shed, then three days this May with the builder and volunteers building the park. Equipment was on site for three more days to complete some final features and hydro-seeding.There are beginner bumps through to extra large jumps for expert riders so there is something for everyone including those interested in pumps tracks. The expert pump track is currently ridable but requiring some maintenance while the beginner pump track is still under construction during the development of this publication. A garbage can, bench and sign are still to come.We strongly recommend anyone using the jumps and pump track wear helmets, protective gear and ride within their abilities. The park is unsupervised and riders assume the risk of any injury that may occur. Users are maintaining the park and many are following the dirt jumper credo of “No dig, No ride”.

We respectfully request that people refrain from climbing or using RC vehicles on the jumps as this activity destroys the lips (the squared off tops) of the jumps and riders must repair them before they can ride again. Please support biking in our community by joining the Wildhorse Cycling Club.

Wallyball is a fast paced sport that combines handball (racquetball with no racquet), tennis, and volleyball. It is played in a racquetball court with the net hung above the center line, dividing the court in half. The ball is the same size as a regular volleyball and can be played with anywhere from two to six players per side. Much of the strategy used in wallyball is similar to that used in volleyball, with different rules. Many team’s create their own rules with an emphasis to enhance physical fitness and to have fun!For information about booking the racquet court for a game of wallyball contact Leisure Services at 250-489-0220.

CounT Your KliCKs Club are you training for a triathlon or just interested in improving your swimming endurance? This program is designed to track your total swimming distance and will help keep you in shape while tracking improvement in swimming skills at the same time. Come in during any lane swimming time and record your lengths. For more information see the Leisure Services desk.

Why Wear ShoeS? Aquatic shoes provide the wearer with more stability and traction for an upright stance when moving through the water. They reduce the effects of impact when jumping in shallow water and add resistance in deep and shallow water, thereby further helping build strength. They help to prevent accidental slips on the deck and in the pool. They also help protect the feet from infection and protect the joints from impact. what kind of shoes can you wear? Old trainers (as long as they are clean!), surf walkers, sport sandals, or specific shoes made for aquatic fitness. Ask any of our aquafit instructors where to buy these types of shoes, they will be happy to assist you!
