Avila College acknowledges the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of the land on which the College is built.

It’s a powerful message of the faith, hope and love of Jesus in the Gospel; the action centred witness of Nano Nagle and through the Presentation values of faith, vision, community, action, daring, justice and compassion.

It is also powerfully reflected in the contemplative writings of St Teresa of Avila who directs followers of Christ to “have a determined determination to never give up prayer”.

As people of “our Avila” learning community the challenge to look caringly and lovingly upon each other and grow as a result has been in abundance this past fortnight.

Just a few of these observations have passed my gaze:

• Student performers strutting the stage in the Catholic School’s spectacular, Time to Shine at The State Theatre

• Year 11 Interfaith Excursion reflections from Ms Carroll’s class on what makes people of faith in our broader community connected and empathetic

• Students selected to undertake the International PISA testing taking up the challenge with resilience and optimism

• Students participating in the Girls in STEM conference and Global Politics Students attending the Gillian Triggs lecture on a student free day

• MacKillop House spirit celebrated with gusto by students across all year levels

• Sporting pursuits in aerobics, volleyball, netball and soccer

• Year 8's leading our partnership with primary school students learning in the STEM-4-All program

• The book launch of the Quill and Ink Writers Guild's first publication attended by Holy Family Year 3 students

• Year 10's undertaking the Amazing Spaghetti Machine challenge

• NEAA student conference delegates from Year 9

• Student vs Staff Debate arguing about whether homework should be banned

• Public speaking Comedy Festival showcase of students and staff in the Old Lecture Theatre

• and celebrating 100 Days of Year 7!

Ever generous God,

You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop

To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ

and constant in bringing hope and encouragement

to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.

With confidence in your generous providence

and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop

We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit

so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness.

Ever generous God hear our prayer.

We ask this through Jesus Christ.AmenMary MacKillop

A Prayer

If everything we do begins with how we look at each other then I am a most proud Principal.

I’ve seen and heard hard work, academic diligence, care, compassion, resilience, persistence and joy all around Avila. I have seen students and staff looking at each other and looking out for each other in the ordinariness of daily life in a most extraordinary way. As members of a learning community we often take this a little for granted because it’s so common to us - but it is not common at all and something to be cherished and stewarded.

A reminder that enrolments for Year 7, 2020 close on August 17, all current Year 5 families, particularly those of siblings already attending Avila are reminded to submit applications to avoid missing out on a place.

Happy Learning!

Dr Cotter

St Michael’s Social Justice Group is hosting a screening of the uplifting and hope-filled documentary The Staging Post at 2.00pm on Sunday 12 August.

The film was directed by Jolyon Hoff, an Australian Documentary Filmmaker. He was living in Jakarta when Australia ‘stopped the boats’. He had never met a refugee, so he went to the staging post for boats travelling to Christmas Island.

Almost immediately he met, Muzafar Ali and Khadim Dai. Muzafar had already been filming life as a refugee in Cisarua in Indonesia on his mobile phone. Together with Jolyon and Khadim he made The Staging Post.

The school at the centre of the film, co-founded by Muzafar and Khadim, has sparked a refugee-led education revolution.

There are now around 1500 refugees learning at over 10 refugee-managed learning centres in Indonesia.

The film is a story of courage and hope, community and possibilities.

Here are two comments from previous audience members:

"Profoundly moving...beautifully crafted. It demonstrates the power of people to take positive action in dire circumstances and, in particular, the power of women in advocating for their children's education and a better future." Anni Webster

"What a fantastic night so glad I could introduce my son to this movie, he was most excited tosee the school via Skype at the end. Thank you, thank you. "Naomi Brown

30 students from Avila College recently participated in PISA tests. PISA is the Program for International Student Assessment. The students were randomly selected to represent Australia in the world’s largest student assessment program.

PISA is conducted every three years with students from over 80 different OECD countries participating. Students from approximately 800 large, small, rural, regional, urban, public and private schools across Australia were selected to participate.

PISA assesses students’ knowledge and skills in reading, mathematics, science and financial literacy, providing both a national and international perspective.

The results from PISA provide information that indicates to what extent young Australians are meeting important educational goals, and assists in identifying areas of strength

and weakness in the Australian education system.

This enables policy makers, researchers and teachers to compare Australian students’ performance with other countries and to learn from education systems around the world.

Individual results are not made available because that is not the purpose of PISA. Rather, it is the de-aggregated data that is useful to the government and policy makers.

The Australian report on this year’s 2018 PISA tests will be released in December 2019. Previous Australian reports can be accessed from the PISA database at www.acer.org/ozpisa/publications-and-data

We thank and commend the 30 Avila students from years 9 and 10 who undertook the recent PISA tests on behalf of Australia!

Parents are reminded that bookings may be made via PAM for the Parent-Student-Teacher meetings to be held on Thursday 16 and Tuesday 21 August.

Subject Selection for 2019Subject selection is in full swing with many students visiting the Careers Hub in the Library, seeking out subject specialists or talking with teachers about their selections. Homeroom teachers, Curriculum Leaders, the Directors of Study, Careers staff and the Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching may be consulted if required. Names and email addresses of these key staff were in the slides that were presented at the Subject Selection Information Evenings that are now available in the Parent Correspondence section on PAM.

All Years 8 to 11 students and their parents are reminded that subject selections for 2019 must be completed via Web Preferences by Thursday 23 August. Although students from Years 8 to 11 make their selections online, they must submit signed print outs of their selections (with copies of approval to accelerate for Years 10 and 11 selections where applicable) to their homeroom teachers no later than 8.35am on 23 August. Construction of the 2019 timetable grid will commence immediately and will be based on students’ subject selections as at 23 August.

Extension OpportunitiesYears 9 and 10 students who have applied for VCE acceleration will be notified of the outcome of their applications by Tuesday 14 August.

As advised to parents and students at the recent Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Information Evening, Avila College offers an accelerated program for highly able Year 9 Mathematics students. Teachers nominate a small group of students for this accelerated Mathematics program based on a range of criteria. The Year 9 accelerated Mathematics program compresses two years of learning into one year thus enabling highly able students to progress to VCE Mathematical Methods when in Year 10 in 2020. Invitations to accelerate in Year 9 Maths are issued via Caremonkey to parents of selected students. In order to minimize confusion and inadvertent errors, selection of Accelerated Maths in Year 9 is not done via Web Preferences.

Dante Alighieri Poetry SuccessCongratulations to Karina Parisi (Year 9) who won Second Prize in the state for the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. This was an amazing achievement and we commend her for it.

Starting the day with a Positive: Morning Homeroom

Each day at Avila College starts with students meeting in their assigned homerooms with their homeroom teacher. This fifteen minute block, from 8.35 to 8.50 am., at the beginning of their working day, serves a variety of important purposes in the students’ life at the College.Research has shown that for a modern teenager to have robust mental health they must feel a connection to something bigger than themselves. For Avila College students, this is often what they find as a member of a homeroom. It is a time when our students interact with their peers, celebrate special occasions, discuss current affairs, major events in their year level and social issues that concern them.

Having an adult mentor or advocate in the school is a great advantage for our students and this role is fulfilled by their homeroom teacher. A strong connection with this person is established in morning homeroom each morning, over the course of the year. It is an important point of contact with a trusted adult in their lives. Homerooms, in the company of their teachers, often establish their own ‘personality’, which can even extend to their own jokes. This all adds to a student’s sense of belonging.Often it is during homeroom that important information is distributed to students about their academic program. This information and that pertaining to extra-curricular activities is communicated when the Class Captains read the Student Messages to the class.

Mornings at Avila are alive with the buzzing sounds emerging from every homeroom. School has begun!

This fifteen minute period of the day also allows each student to organise their materials. It gives them time to settle and establish focus. Homeroom looks different for different year levels throughout the school. In Year 7 Gold, for example, you may see students discussing ways in which to make their homeroom really feel like home. Their decoration committee is a force to be reckoned with! At the other end of the school, the Year 12 Leaders have made Wednesday homeroom a time for the

year level to bond. This bond will prove ever more important as they move towards the final stage of their school journey.Every morning homeroom begins with a prayer. This communal prayer is a time for the sharing of a common faith and an all-important moment in the students’ busy day when they can engage in conversation with God.Who could believe that so much could happen in that short period of fifteen minutes!

On the morning of Friday the 27th of July, I was nervous, to say the least.

It was the day of my first public speaking competition at Avila and I had been preparing for a very long time. However as I caught the taxi over with other Avila girls, I realised we were all somewhat in the same boat. None of us knew exactly what to expect.

We could not have been more delighted with what we found waiting for us at Box Hill RSL.

Everyone there, from the competitors to the judges, were so lovely. Although there were challenges - such as the impromptu speeches - it was a lot of fun.

I got to meet new people and even make new friends while bonding over Marvel movies and sharing passions concerning social justice issues.

Abbey Stizza spoke insightfully about war veterans being shown care through the provision of prosthetics.

Kavi Arunagirinathan enthusiastically outlined the work of Chris Sarra and his "Stronger/Smarter Institute.

Mila Vargas provided a poignant speech on stories as the source of memories.

We had a brilliant day with Mila being a winner and Kavipriya, the runner-up.

The Legacy Public Speaking Competition was a great opportunity (with wonderful food!) and a really special experience.

Good luck to Mila for the Preliminary Final.

Junior Internal Debating PlayoffsTeams at both Year 7 and Year 8 competed in a debating "playoff" for a place in the Grand Final on the 9th August.

The topic was "that we should make Asian languages compulsory in Australian schools" and both sides of the debate were supported by great ideas and practical concerns about student choice.Congratulations to the students who won, especially to Jessica Loeding and Elisa Scholast who were awarded "Best Speaker Awards". Good luck to the students who will compete in the Grand Final at both Year 7 and Year 8.

Final Round of Senior DAV DebatingUnfortunately, the final round for debating was quite messy due to an error in the date for the debates on the advised calendar. This round has not yet been finalised as some debates needed to be postponed. This was a sad end to a season as the evening was not well-attended because of the postponements and some debates needing to be abandoned. However, across the season, the students have enjoyed the tone of the competition on debating nights at St Kevins this year. The venue has been a bustling hub of enthusiastic students from St Kevins, Xavier, Melbourne Grammar, Melbourne High, Genazzano, Sacre Coeur, Presentation Windsor, Melbourne Girls and Mac Rob.Congratulations for this round go to Bridgette Carpino, Matilda Baumann and Valerie Sova who were awarded "Best Speaker Awards".

“Private Peaceful” is a mournful yet hopeful story about two brothers, Tommo and Charlie. It is set in England in the early 1900s, with the themes of conflict, war, family and love being the heart of it. The story shows a bond between two brothers like no-other, no matter what, they will always have each others’ backs.

The former farmers from the countryside are now taking on the horrors that WW1 brings. This best-selling novel by Michael Morpurgo has turned heads, as it not only shows the tragic signs of war but also the bond and love between two brothers that will never be broken.

On Wednesday the 8th of August, the Year 7s of Avila celebrated 100s days!!!!There was music, (I was the DJ), everyone danced, jumped, sang and had a good time. Who knew that today was a lifetime? The cake was absolutely delicious thanks to Ms Kingston’s baking. But the star of the show would be Dr Michelle Cotter. Her costume was amazing. A blue cookie monster and sesame street on the teacher’s tops. What a big, fantastic, joyful and amazing day of our lives. I am very happy to be apart of this amazing school to be part of such an amazing celebration. 100s DAYS!!!

Over the last 100 days of my first year at Avila College, I have enjoyed all the new opportunities that have come my way. I have had so much fun and have learned a lot, joining many creative clubs.I have made many new and cool friends who are very nice and have helped me throughout the beginning of this year. Not forgetting the wonderful and supportive teachers who have helped, not only myself but all the Year 7 students over these 100 awesome school days.

Sienna Lucas Year 7

This year has been incredible and the people at Avila have inspired me to try my best. The girls here are so supportive and kind, they make everyday enjoyable. Avila offers a range of great activities, which I have enjoyed immensely. The celebration was a great way to celebrate 100 days of school and I hope to continue to have a great time in my future years at Avila.

Over the last few years a highlight of Year 11 Religious Education has been the Inter Faith Excursion. On this day the students have the opportunity to visit places of worship from other religious traditions such as Buddhist, Sikh, Jewish, Hindu and Islam. At each mosque, temple or synagogue we are warmly welcomed and a host explains the core beliefs, rituals, symbols and culture. This is an initiative of the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong and enables students and adults to have first hand experience of other faiths, which leads to greater understanding and connection.

Some of the places the girls were able to visit this year were: the Hoa Nghiem Buddhist Temple, the Emir Sultan Mosque, Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple, St Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church and St John’s German Lutheran Church. This is an integral part of our course and is a richly rewarding experience.

Avila Football

Sport & PE

On Thursday 26 July, Avila had the opportunity to field a junior AFL team in a round robin style tournament formed by SCSA.

This would be the first time Avila has competed in SCSA football. With over 70 girls putting their name down, the squad of 22 was easy to fill. All the girls brought excitement and enthusiasm, with many playing out of school and some girls new to the sport but willing to give it a go. The trainings with the squad brought the whole team together with new friendships being formed between Years 7, 8 and 9 students. These trainings helped the girls improve their skills and also communicate and learn about their new teammates. The competition day was a nerve- racking but enjoyable event.

The girls started off in their pool winning both of their games by considerable margins, allowing us to advance to the finals. From there, we were able to win our semi final to come into the grand final undefeated. With many hard efforts by our girls and a late injury running down the clock, we lost narrowly by 2 goals. Despite not winning overall, the girls showed sportsmanship, teamwork and resilience all day, demonstrating the true Avila spirit. We as captains could not be prouder of the girls and all their dedication on match day and at every session. Thank you to everyone who made this day possible and for providing the girls with an incredible chance to showcase their talents. Every single girl should be so proud to be part of the inaugural Avila College Football Team.

Avila College students Sarah Ang, Erin Choo and Emily Goncalves recently co-presented with teacher Mr Ziad Baroudi at DigiCon 2018, the annual conference of Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria.

Speaking to an audience of Digital Technologies teachers their session focused on designing digital techology electives that appeal to girls. The students discussed the curriculum and projects they had completed using coding language Python and public key cryptography.

They then answered questions from the teachers about why they selected these subjects to study and the perceptions of their peers about digital technology classes.

"Presenting was such a great experience and to be able to show everyone what we had achieved was so rewarding. I really enjoyed the robotics workshop, building a unique robot and watching it dance and move was incredible." Sarah Ang

"Being my first conference, I was surprised at how comfortable I felt while presenting and answering questions. I enjoyed listening to other presenters who touched on topics I was interested in and listening to reactions of the audience from our conference." Erin Choo

"Going to DigiCon was a really eye opening experience. Although I was quite nervous to present my work in front of a lot of people, I am really glad that I had the opportunity to do so." Emily Goncalves

Avila College is an allergy aware school. All college staff are trained in severe allergy management every two years and undergo bi-annual updates.

Our student management system alerts staff about students with allergies and other high risk medical conditions.

We also have a number of strategies in place to help keep students at risk of anaphylaxis/allergies as safe as we can.

We now have 24 students who live with the risk of anaphylaxis to foods and insect stings at Avila College.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life- threatening.

It must be treated as a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment and urgent medical attention.

Adrenalin (Epipen) is the only treatment for Anaphylaxis and an ambulance needs to be called (000).

In the time I have worked at Avila College, the majority of allergic reactions, that have happened at school have occurred when a student has eaten another student’s food and not known all the ingredients present in the food.

To assist with our allergy risk management we recommend the following:

• students should wash hands after eating especially if they have been eating nuts or foods which contain nuts.

• students should be aware of their friends with allergies and if they think their friend is having an allergic reaction, seek assistance immediately.

Pathways and Careers

Last week the senior students were involved in a Career Activities day.The day began with a Careers Expo which was held in the Gathering Space where students were given the opportunity to talk to representatives from Universities and Tafes.

We also had a representative from Antipodeans, a company that offers Schoolies programs with a difference. It was a pleasure to welcome three past Avila students as tertiary ambassadors. The students were provided with Course Guides, giveaways and excellent advice to help with their pathways planning.

The Year 10 and 11 students were also involved in further workshops where they had the opportunity to participate in research activities to help with subject selection and post school options.

VTAC GuideThe VTAC Year 11 and 12 Guide: Researching Courses and Applying publication is designed to lead students through course research and application processes. So, Year 11 students will benefit by using this publication to plan, research, and make tentative decisions, whilst Year 12 students can use it to plan, research, decide, and apply.

The publication provides information on key dates, how the application process works, useful tips on scholarships, VTAC personal statements, and much more!

Although each Year 11 and 12 student will receive their own personal copy, this guide is also available as a PDF - VTAC Year 11 and 12 Guide

See Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon & Mars (the red spot).

Bring the whole family along (even if you don't have interviews that night) and let local Astronomy guru Alfred Kruijshoop and his student helpers let you and your family see the planets like never

before. See the rings of Saturn, the planet-wide dust storm on Mars (which won't get as close again until 2033) and the craters and mountains on the Moon. Lots of telescopes, loads to see, don't miss it!
