16 HOW AIRBUS IMPROVED ITS QUALITY CONTROL IN PRODUCT FROM 3 WEEKS TO 3 DAYS Early detection of Non-Conformities Airbus is probably “The” European Company by definition with its different production plans/factories spread all around Europe between France, Germany, UK and Spain…with a final assembly in Toulouse, south west of France. The quality in the Aircraft industry cannot allow any percent of imperfection even if it only 0.1%. The challenge for such company is to maintain an equal quality of fabrication within its all factories. The only way to achieve such excellence is by controlling several time the same parts to make sure that nothing has been missing, displaced or damaged. These multiple check along the production is unfortunately a mandatory time consumer any Aircraft constructor cannot avoid. With the records of commands that Airbus Aviation has been signing during the past 10 years, it was necessary to improve the speed of these checks. In 2011, Airbus Aviation asked Airbus Innovation Group to find a solution to reduce the time of these inspection keeping the same level of quality inspection. After a year of Research and Development, Airbus Innovation Group launched in January 2012 its solution working on a windows ruggedness tactile tablet that is superimposing “As Designed” DMU (Digital Mock-Up) over “As Built” Reality, thanks to specific SensorPack hardware (HD camera + geolocation system) and advanced development based on Marker technology associated to SLAM algorithms. The user interface was directly developed with the quality inspectors following their onsite procedures in order to propose a unique and user- friendly interface that could be used by people who are not used to work with a tactile tablets. HMI is focused on simplicity and adequate process and has been improved over its first deployment in order to be easily used by operators (e.g. can be used after 15 min of light training). A Geolocation system will update automatically the Field of View of the DMU according to the moving of the operator with the tablet, and superimpose DMU over Reality. HOW AIRBUS

IMPROVED

ITS QUALITY CONTROL

IN PRODUCT

FROM 3 WEEKS

TO 3 DAYS

Early detection of Non-Conformities

Airbus is probably “The” European Company by definition with its different production plans/factories spread all around Europe between France, Germany, UK and Spain…with a final assembly in Toulouse, south west of France. The quality in the Aircraft industry cannot allow any percent of imperfection even if it only 0.1%. The challenge for such company is to maintain an equal quality of fabrication within its all factories. The only way to achieve such excellence is by controlling several time the same parts to make sure that nothing has been

missing, displaced or damaged.

The user interface was directly

developed with the quality inspectors following their onsite procedures in order to propose a unique and user-friendly interface that could be used by people who are not used to work with a tactile tablets.

All the different functions will facilitate the inspection check of the operator in order to reach the exhaustive parts in the list to be checked.

A report is automatically generated, including the snapshots created by the operator.

Before using MiRA, it took 3 weeks to perform the Quality Inspection of the thousands of little parts named brackets (between 80 000 to 120 000 depending on the Aircraft Model); part stuck on the bare surface of the panels that are essential to assemble the different equipment’s. After their training on MiRA, the inspectors were able to reduce the time to 3 days.

Todays, Inspector trainee is half day for inspection module and Integrator trainee is one day for DMU preparation module.

More than a simple inspection tool, MiRA is also a powerful paperless solution that provides in real time accurate information on the early

potential Non-Conformities detected. These defaults are now fixed right away instead of later on on the assembly lines.

Since the 1st of January 2015, TESTIA (an AIRBUS Group Subsidiary) has the mission to sale MiRA, under the name Smart AR Tool (SART) outside AIRBUS Group to any industries facing the same challenges like Shipbuilding, Trains/Railways, Automotive, Industrial & Power plants…

TESTIA’s genesis has over 20 years of expertise in the scope of Non-Destructive Testing and Quality Control for demanding aerospace environment and requirement. TESTIA know-how is deployed both in production and for maintenance all round the world.

The Augmented Reality is now a new add-on of TESTIA portfolio as a new generation of solution for Inspection and Non-Destructive Testing.

So far, SART Solution can be deployed on each system where DMU is available, and is compatible with a large range of CAD systems (CATIA v4-5-6, CADDS 5, Pro/Engineer, STEP…)

The next steps for SART is to fully integrate different modules such as the Assistance via Video Projection, The Step-by-Step Procedures liked with the 3D models and the Remote Expertise Assistance via Video.
