BE PREPAREDFrom about the age o 13 and into my early 20s, I was veryhappily involved in the Boy Scout movement. As you mayknow the scout motto is Be Prepared and its one that I havetried to ollow as best I can. heir secondary motto o courseis Help Little Ole Ladies and I have been aithul to it alsothrough many years o marriage.

In preparing or the worst, I now have all o the wood ornext winters heating already stacked away undercover. Ialso have about another two year supply on hand i neededhis is the earliest ever or being prepared, but due to thewet weather and the hot weather, it hasnt been attractive tobe out in the woods doing much resh logging and so morethings are getting done closer to home.

Another reason or my early bird readiness is ClimateChange. While most o us think o climate change as Globa

Warming, it also means strange and oten severe weatherevents such as tornados. While a major snow storm in Augustdoes seem unlikely, I do think that we need to Be Preparedor weather that is more extreme and unpredictable than whawe have traditionally experienced. So while it is possible thatwe could be sun bathing in December, other extremes couldoccur. As part o being prepared I am looking or a logging wench

or is it winch ... basically a tractor attachment or wie thatwill go into the woods and etch back trees that have beenelled. While playing around in the woods is one reasonto have a winch the primary purpose o course is to pullshort people out o deep snow banks. With over two tons opulling orce, I should be able to rescue the missus rom mos

situations.Anyone having a good used one (winch not wie) please give

me a call. Some urther thoughts: It takes

as much energy to wish as it does toplan.- Eleanor Roosevelt. As men get older, the toys get moreexpensive.- Marvin Davis. Plan ahead or ind trouble on thedoorstep.- Conucius. 800

tWO FOR tHE PRICE OF ONEIts that time o year when most garden centers are sellingtheir surplus stock or about hal o the usual market priceand wonderul, irresistible bargains abound. Many o theperennials on oer, (theres not much point in botheringwith annuals at this stage o the game) are root bound andin many cases dying or want o a good soaking. he bestapproach is to remove the pot rom the contents and placethe plant in a bucket o water or at least 24 hours, this willhelp to revive it and the roots can more easily be teased outo the point where they no longer maintain the shape o thecontainer that they illed. A hole needs to be prepared thesame depth and twice the width o the container so that thesoil level remains constant, a sprinkling o bone meal and

some good compost should surround the planting and a dailywatering schedule arranged or at least a week. Should theplant possess any blossoms it is well to remove the older onesat the very least, preerably all o them, allowing the plantto devote all its energy into establishing a good root systemwhich will pay dividends next year.

Black, red and white currants abound at this time and withminimum eort one can do a bit o a two or one gig withthem; have on hand a good pair o sharp secateurs along witha sturdy bowl or collection purposes. When harvesting romwood stock that is three or more years old or black, or our ormore years old or red or white, the cane should be removedas close to the ground as possible; those canes will only bearscantily in the uture and their presence will actually cause

reduced yield or the younger canes. Once this operation isconcluded the weaker or misshapen canes should be removedso that about a dozen remain on each bush, a mix o one andtwo year old canes. Surrounding the pruned bushes with agood compost/manure mix will ensure a bumper harvest ornext year and a major all job will be done at the same timeas harvesting the bounty.

Now all that remains is to decide on jam, jelly, wine, rozenberries, syrup etc. Next year there will be such abundanceyou wont have to choose, you will have enough crop to dothe lot! 805

gOSHEN 171St ANNIvERSARy SERvICEOn Snda, As 14h at 3:00pm the Goshen United BaptistChurch will celebrate its 171st anniversary service. Te guesspeaker or this service will be Rev. Greg Jones, area ministerrom Quispamsis.

Tis little white wooden church, nestled in the good land oGoshen in Albert County, has had services since 1860 in thisbuilding. Te pump organ is still in use and the seats are stillhard and straight, according to todays standards, but that didnot bother the settlers who put so much eort into constructingit o such heavy beams. At one time there were doors on eachpew; maybe they helped to keep the children in their placewhen amilies were so large. Te pulpit still in use was built bya ormer pastor. Tere is now electricity but in those days onlya Goshen breeze would cool the congregation. Te ladies musthave suered in the summer heat with those billowing longdark dresses! Men wore suits - or at least their best - with a hatsuspenders and vest, no doubt. It was a time to meet with yourneighbours and catch up on the news since travel was dicultand arms oen spread apart.

Some settler names rom long ago in this area are HaywardDeMille, Jonah, Babcock, Geldart, Blakney and Graves - nameson the stones in the surrounding cemetery.

Parking was no problem. Tere wasnt any need o a parkinglot, just a place or the horses to stand and patiently wait, and atone time there was a shed or that purpose. Many older churcheshave allen into disrepair, been turned into a cottage, or onlyhave annual services. We still meet every other Sunday in thebuilding except in the colder winter months.

I you would like the experience o an old-ashioned churchsetting, please join us! 835

SCHOOL DAySAs we start the wind down o summer to September, or manyo us the beginning o the school year looms large in our viewIt has been several years since my daughters were in school, butthis September marks the rst day o kindergarten or the grandgranddaughter. She has attended preschool and loved it. She hashad a visit to the school in May which included a short drive onthe school bus, which seemed to go well. Her biggest concernseems to be that school bus . . . maybe those Magic School Busstories have her a little worried?

As the parent o young children I enjoyed my summers withthem, but I was certainly ready or school to open by SeptemberLie could then resume some semblance o normality (which ispretty elusive at any time o the year with kids!), at least untilChristmas. I sometimes wondered what it is like in dierent

climates, where summer isnt much dierent rom winterWould two one month school breaks spaced throughout theyear be as luxurious as that two ull months plus o?

As a child, I loved the newness o the new school year. Newpencils, new scribblers, new books. Tere is something sosatisying about cracking open that new scribbler and writingthe rst words. A sense o the journey ahead and the new thingsto learn. For I always loved to learn. I we teach our childrennothing else, a healthy curiousity about the world will servethem well. Tey will need the reading and numeracy skills aswell, but it is that curiousity to explore that drives learning orthe shear joy o learning. Kids are born with it, but we need toencourage it to ensure it does not get lost. I KNOW it can beannoying to answer the tenth question in ve minutes, but how

else will they learn? We are all teachers, whether we realize itor not, and every moment is a teaching opportunity. Summer

vacation included . . . what are you teaching right now?Tey say that we are better educated than our parents generation

What they mean is that we go to school longer. It is not the samething. ~ Richard Yates. 801
