From Fr Doug Por el Padre Doug Our faith is a free gift from God, but on this side of God’s Kingdom, sustaining our faith is not free. It is, we believe, worth an infinite amount more than its cost on earth. We want our kids to be with us and our ancestors in our Father’s heavenly kingdom. That is what our Church and our parish are ultimately about: seeking communion with God and the saints as we follow Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit in our beautiful and historic little spot on this side of God’s kingdom. This will be my first monthly (approximately) report about the state of our finances. My hope is to preach about the gospel and to use this forum to talk about money. I was a lay person a long time and I did not appreciate fund-raising from the pulpit. Systemically, it is probably not possible to entirely avoid this, but I will do my best to keep it to a minimum and hopefully, one day, not at all. We are currently operating within our budget, which this year is balanced but without reference to looming debt payments. These significant payments were hoped to be serviced through our capital campaign which has not achieved its goals. But there is good news: our other revenues are slightly above our optimistic weekly projections. Our school enrollment has met its goal for our balanced budget with more potential students examining our facility. We can be grateful for this sustained momentum that started before my arrival, and I am grateful for your growing support of our parish as we move forward. Last week, our new leadership structure was informed of our paper debt and of our unseen, but very real, deferred maintenance debt that, if accurately measured, would be many dollars – in my opinion, close to two million of them. With all that said, here are our paper debt numbers that do not reflect our deferred maintenance: Line of Credit, due in full November 1, 2011: $90,000.00 Amount owed the Archdiocese that accumulated before Fr. Paul’s pastorate: somewhere between $124,626 (our number) and $208,591 (their number). The Archdiocese recognizes that we have maintained our responsibilities in paying our assessment for many years now and has no punitive desire to cripple us in a repayment plan. We must, nevertheless, establish a program to pay back this legitimate debt in an amount that is resolved reasonably and fairly. We owe $119,410 for a reconstruction loan on which we are currently paying only interest of 5.57% during the summer months. It is due in full on September 5, 2020. Good practice would be to start paying on principal year round. Our monthly payment on the Parish Rectory, the priest’s residence, is $1,325 and the total due is $93,586 as of June 30, 2011. Unfortunately, we must explore the risk of refinancing this property to help pay our imminent debt. We owe $56,336 plus interest for our fire safety system that was mandated by Carver County. We have three $20,010 payments remaining, one in October of this year and two next year (May and October). We owe $38,437 to Solid Restoration and Construction at the rate of $834 a month for continuing repairs. The total is between $522,595 and $606,360. With deferred maintenance, we have do have serious issues, but they are manageable for a parish this size if we become committed and share a far-reaching vision. Right now, we do not have ready cash to service these large looming debts. We appreciate your help that we will always need; as a parish we are in this together and our leadership will endeavor to always remain transparent. We now have a leadership structure emerging to keep this ideal a reality. There is reason for optimism based in recognition of where we are fueled by the vision of where we are going. We need to move forward by thinking imaginatively and optimistically, in consideration of how to best share our treasure with the treasure of faith passed to us from our ancestors on its way to our descendants. God bless all of you and keep up the good work!

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the departed, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. Godparents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, opposite page) to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by appointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… 1st weekend of the month following each Mass. For other requests, please contact the office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves responsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. © Copyright, J.
