Following last years successful Carnival which was well supporteddespite the rain, we are delighted to announce the Second AnnualCarnival, Saturday August 16th at Berry Brow Recreation Field.Once more, we are having a the Tug of War which proved verycompetitive last year, with teams from all over the area.

We have had an increasingnumber of West Indianfunerals and pre-bookingssince the first of Mrs GretaHamilton a year ago.These have been colourfuland musical, with themourners beautifully andelegantly dressed. Andthat's the men, - the ladiesare just fantastic. Thelargest to date was that ofMr Cebert Simpson, whereseveral hundred peoplearrived - and my umbrellatraffic control systemfailed. Somehow thehearse and six (or so)Highfield Rolls Royces plus several BMW’s - and all facing in different directionsmanaged to fit into the car park. As the cortege ground to a halt an immaculatelydressed gentleman said to me ‘Hey man, don’t worry. Who cares? Nobody wantsto hurry to their own funeral!” Very true sir.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, ‘we’ have been cleaning junk out of a barn which forover a century has been used for - junk. At various times bits of old vehicles, acircular saw which would send a Health and Safety Official into a care home, acoal fired central heating system etc, - and then newspapers from about 1950came to light. These have proved that you can learn from the past - but damn allfrom the future. The politicos, the quango and committee people who direct ourlives - just hate that thought. It beggars up their ideas of ‘New initiatives’ whichalways turn out to be old hat. And for a laugh of a sort. Did you know that theKorean War which cost the lives of millions but is now almost forgotten - was toend on July 28th 1953. That’s 55 years ago but officially the UN, which includes usof course - is still at war because neither side would admit defeat!

Kirklees’ main parks are joining in the ‘Summer Buzz’ fun with freesports activities.

In two-hour sessions organised by the Park Wardens, youngsters can trya mix of football, eurohoc, rounder, cricket and volleyball.

I have recently been to Denmark tovisit my son and family. My 8 yearold grandaughter speaks Danish aseveryone she is with most of thetime are Danish. She told everyonefor weeks “Grandma is comingfrom England”. Her Dentist said

The invite dropped on to the mat at mums, strawberry tea sconesand coffee. Mum being 88yrs of age I accompanied her to theafternoon treat, put on by the children from Emley First School. Iwas amazed, we were met at the door by 3 children, mums namewas ticked of a list and she was given a name badge so the children would know her name.Inside the tables were set and mum was shown to her seat bymore children and served strawberries, scones and a drink. Theremust have been at least 40-50 pensioners at the tea, and the children looked after them all, supported by teachers andvolunteers. Thinking how well they were doing and how polite, but there wasmore to come. Out came drums, recorders, a guitar, and balls,(yes huge footballs). The children sang and music was played,the balls were bounced to the rhythm of the drums. I just want to say a big thank you to all the children who took part,and how much mum and all the other pensioners enjoyed a lovelyafternoon, so much so that mum wants to know when we aregoing again?

Grandmas and Granddads

Busy babysitting and kids absolutely fixated to 1st Gear on the TV, orsomething like that, you know how it goes I can’t miss this bit as theclock ticks past bedtime set by Mum and Dad. Five more minutes thisbit is really exciting as another 10 minutes tick by. At last its finishedstraight to bed now, but we always have a story before bedtime, aren’tthey clever, my excuse of not having my glasses didn’t work, as we willread it for you grandma, this always takes longer so beware always takeyour specs when babysitting. At last all is quiet, time to put my feet up and watch the TV, and contemplate how much I enjoyed the kid’s story book. Highly recommended. Better than the newspapers with all their doom andgloom.
