Audubon Nature InstituteAnnual Report 20151

For all of us as Audubon Nature

Institute members, supporters

and employees, 2015 was a

landmark year, both beginning

and ending with the kind of

inspirational endangered

species stories we love.

We began in January with the

release of 28 sea turtles into

the warm and welcoming

waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

These cold-stunned turtles were

rehabilitated here at Audubon

thanks to your support of

Audubon’s rescue and

rehabilitation initiatives.

As the year drew to a close,

you celebrated with us as

Audubon Zoo’s endangered

orangutans took up residence

in their new exhibit, with

features for climbing, swinging,

exploring and watching the

world from one of the tallest

points in the Zoo.

In between, we celebrated

so much together—the 25th

anniversary of Audubon

Aquarium of the Americas,

births and hatchings of

precious new wildlife, events

that enriched our community

and programs that educated

our children.

Our partnership with you

created wonders across the

city and around the world,

as our collaborations brought

nature to life in vivid color

and full dimension—sights and

sounds with far more lasting

impact than anything our

children could ever see on an

electronic screen.

Along the way, you enabled

us to grow a legacy for

the future, both in brick

and mortar projects and in

enduring commitment to our

children, our wildlife, and the

environment we call home.

Please join me in looking back

at the incredible year you

made possible. From all of us

at Audubon Nature Institute,

thank you for being part of the

Audubon family.

Sincerely,

L. Ronald FormanPresident and CEOAudubon Nature Institute

Whether they came to Audubon

attractions or Audubon came to

them via our popular outreach

vehicles (ZOOmobile, Wetlands

Express, Bugmobile and AquaVan),

thousands of children, students

and families took part in Audubon

education programs in 2015.

Audubon’s family of donors

enabled us to extend our reach

with energized and imaginative

programs that drew people from all

around our area. These expanded

offerings sowed seeds for future

careers, as youngsters eagerly

jumped into science, technology

and conservation concepts while

nurturing a lifelong love of nature.

Wine and cheese gatherings and

photography classes inspired the

grown-ups to look at our world in a

whole new way. Adventures out in

thefieldincludedbugcollecting

and nature walks.

Programsforschoolsonfieldtrips

included Shark School and Jungle

School. Anyone for a shark dissection

class? Young conservationists and

seasoned nature experts eagerly

embraced it all.

A hyacinth macaw hatched at Audubon Zoo on July 8, 2015. The Zoo’s Bird Department staff hand-raised the little chick as the parents were inexperienced and unable to properly care for it.

CONSERVATION

There’s just something about our

local culture—it’s unlike any you’ll

findanywhereelseintheworld.

And, it has quite a bit to do with

our inherent natural wonders,

our fascinating wildlife, and our

incredible seafood.

Audubon Nature Institute made

conservation fun and tasty with Gulf

United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.).

freshest, most sustainable seafood to

Restaurant partners multiplied in

2015 as G.U.L.F. recruited more

New Orleans eateries to serve and

support sustainable seafood, while

an intimate dinner at the Aquarium

showcased G.U.L.F. partner chefs

and featured the best sustainable

seafood the Gulf of Mexico has

to offer. These dinners are set to

continue and expand in 2016.

Animals are the heart of Audubon

Nature Institute. When you

encounter the wonder of a newly-

hatched penguin or newborn baby

colobus monkey, or vote on a name

for the Aquarium’s new resident

white alligator (Chompitoulas,

overwhelmingly!), you know your

partnership with Audubon is doing

great things.

Together we reminisce about how

many of us grew up with the animals

at the Zoo and the Aquarium.

Today, we all delight in watching

our children and grandchildren

develop that same sense of joy and

stewardship. The animals who call

Audubon home are ambassadors to

the next generation of naturalists.

Thegentleflutterofabutterfly

and the incredible brilliance of

the world’s frogs fascinate our

youngest conservationists, inspiring

confidencethatourworktogether

has delivered the planet’s future to

excellent hands.

COMMUNITY

14

The Audubon family of donors and

supporters moves our community

forward. This community is made

of partnerships and programs,

but it also encompasses picnics

in Audubon Park or festivals at

Woldenberg Riverfront Park. Our

community is up-close penguin

encounters for youngsters with

special challenges and a day just for

Mom with Irma Thomas at the Zoo.

Community at Audubon means

relaxing concerts, challenging

runs, and volunteering. It means

partying with a purpose at the

elegant Whitney Zoo-To-Do and

family-oriented Zoo-To-Do for Kids

presented by Tulane Pediatrics—or

strolling in the evening breeze along

the riverfront enjoying Scales & Ales

and Toast for the Coast.

Community includes volunteer

experiences for youngsters that

could easily lead to an entire lifetime

of service volunteering at Audubon

or elsewhere in the community.

These events and initiatives weave

the fabric of our unique family,

speaking to the essence of who

we are, and how we will shape our

future. It’s all thanks to you.

OUR FUTURE

“Audubon Nature Institute has a vital role to play in making sure that parents know how to expose their children to a globalized scientific literacy that is not available at almost any school anymore. And that can only happen by taking a small child to the Zoo and letting them be fascinated by the flamingos.”

“What I love most about working at Audubon is the connection to the community. Audubon is the source of powerful memories for many people, and I’m grateful when they are shared with me.”

Audubon Nature Institute is grateful to all donors, members and visitors

who support our vision of creating an outstanding family of museums

and parks dedicated to nature. Audubon receives virtually no city, state

or federal funding for operations, relying instead on front gate admission,

concessions and gift shop sales, facility rentals and the generous gifts

from friends who help provide world-class adventures to more than

2 million visitors each year.
