ARTIST’S RECEPTION IN THE BSP GALLERY
We have been enjoying the gorgeous photography of Curtis V. Smith in the BSP Art Gallery and for
that we owe a special thank you to our own Valerie Bashaw for the connection!
Curtis was brought up in the arts, beginning with family trips to Florence, Italy, later
followed by his introduction to the science and the beauty of photography in his studies at
UMKC. His artistry has taken him from a degree in microbiology to taking photos of the moon
through the Warkoczewski telescope to myriad travel destinations you see in this beautiful
exhibit. He has traveled and photographed locales from Grand Cayman’s coral reefs to Taos,
New Mexico, to the mountains of the French Alps.
We are hosting a reception for Mr. Smith at 3:00 on Monday, April 3, in the Art Gallery,
so please come by to meet the artist and have some wine and cheese with your friends!

Attorney Steve Miller of Miller|Schirger, but, more importantly, son of BSP resident Bernadette Miller, will join us this month to discuss the challenges that face the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT). Steve’s long list of accomplishments as a lawyer are national, but his tireless work as chairman for the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) is what brings him to BSP. He is known for the leadership he provided and for keeping transportation as a top-of-mind subject for all Missourians. He kept MODOT’s long-term insufficient funding problems at the forefront and worked diligently to build non-partisan support for additional transportation investment in our beloved Missouri. Steve’s extensive legal bio can be read at www.MillerSchirger.com. What is not published is his non-stop board and volunteer and cause-driven activity. Mr. Miller was a founding board member of Turning Point: Center for Hope and Healing, The Don Bosco Centers, Christmas in October and much more. Please give him a warm welcome at our Speaker Series beginning at 3:00 on Thursday, April 6, in the Westport Room.

A QUARTET OF SYMPHONY STRINGS
JOHN WAGNER’S ‘MAXINE” CARTOON
In the mid-1980s, John Wagner was working on Hallmark’s newly launched Shoebox card line when he got the idea for a character who was a composite of his mother, aunts and grandmother. The character appeared on a couple of cards and was known in-house as “John Wagner’s Old Lady.” The cards quickly grew in popularity. And because the name “John Wagner’s Old Lady” didn’t exactly roll off the tongue, Shoebox soon decided to have a little naming contest. Artists, writers and a few other Hallmarkers were asked to submit a name that fit the character. “Maxine” showed up over and over, and since there was no evidence of anyone having stuffed the ballot box, it was declared the winner. This month we have the distinct pleasure of welcoming John to discuss his
greeting card and licensing bonanza, including the feisty and hilarious Maxine and her faithful dog, Floyd, at 3:00 on Tuesday, April 25, in the Westport Room.
Anne-Marie Brown stars as first violinist of the Kansas City Symphony, Kristin Velicer serves as assistant principal second violin with the symphony, Jessica Nance is acting associate principal viola and Alexander East serves as assistant principal cello. Ms. Brown holds degrees from Northwestern University and the Manhattan School of Music; Ms. Velicer’s master’s degree is from Rice University/Shepherd School of Music; prior to KC, Ms. Nance performed with the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Windsor (Ontario) Symphony; and Mr. East holds a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Be our guest to hear violin, viola and cello music at 3:00 on Friday, April 21, in the Madison Living Room. If you would like to read more about these accomplished artists, you can go to the website: www.kcsymphony.org/musicians.

And the disciples? They take a detour, as we often do on our own faith journeys, but that’s not the end of their story, or ours, for this reason: Jesus, crucified, then travels from death to life! On all our journeys, bumps and detours included, we walk in the light of the risen Lord. Let us pray for one another on our pilgrimage to Easter joy, bearing in mind that Easter is more than a holy day. It is a verb, describing the divine movement within us that calls us to act in love.
Let him easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us, be a crimson-cresseted east (Gerard Manley Hopkins)
— Chaplain Kathy Hall

Through the sounds of his piano, he transports listeners to a world of peace,

SPEAKER SERIES: DEAN GRAY WITH MRI GLOBAL
www.BishopSpencerPlace.org 9
SHAWNEE MISSION EAST GIRLS CHOIR
LUNCH & LEARN SERIES
KANSAS CITY ART INSTITUTE’S DONNA HOUTTEMAN
The entire Shawnee Mission East Choir group is comprised of more than 400 students within five choirs. Please join us for another engaging performance by one of the (smaller!) choirs, called the Shawnee Mission East Chansonettes Girls Choir, at 1:30 on Wednesday, April 19, in the Madison Living Room.
Kansas City-Based MRIGlobal conducts programs in the areas of national security and defense; life sciences; energy and the environment; agriculture and food safety; and engineering and infrastructure. Our tireless advocate, Bert Bates, has helped us secure another brilliant speaker for our speaker series — Dean Gray, Ph.D. Dr. Gray is the director of special programs and oversees the planning and direction of operations in support of national security and defense. He is a subject-matter expert in global narcotics and narco-terrorism research, plant product physiology, extraction and analysis.
The main topic of discussion will be regarding the CBCS: Containerized Bio-Containment System, named by R&D Magazine as one of the 100 most innovative projects of the year. Weighing in at 22,000 pounds, this flyable, containerized unit supports and facilitates a critical-care treatment environment. CBCS units improve on existing U.S. medevac capabilities, allowing for the safe transport of multiple people infected with a highly-contagious disease to clinical centers for life-saving treatment.
Please meet Dr. Gray and learn about this fascinating system at 3:00 sharp on Tuesday, April 18, in the Westport Room.
For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today? What forces and factors underlie what we read in the news, and what drives the current challenges the Middle East both faces and poses? In coming to terms with the present and future of the Middle East, an understanding of its history is not only highly valuable, but essential.
We begin this new series with two 30-minute talks on DVD called Turning Points in Middle Eastern History, followed by a group discussion. Lunch starts at 11:30 on Monday, April 10, in the Westport Room. Lunch will be provided (for ten points), so sign up with the concierge by Saturday, April 8, to reserve lunch from PB&J Restaurants.
Donna Houtteman is the leading voice behind the Art Sofa Series for Continuing and Professional Studies at the Kansas City Art Institute. Although she doesn’t call herself an “art historian,” her passion for art and enthusiasm for the history in which it was made is quite contagious. Donna also leads more than 50 tours per year at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Ms. Houtteman returns to BSP at 3:00 on Monday, April 17, in the Westport Room. She has already gained quite a following here after her initial talk in January!

THE MAX LEVY TRIO
AN OUTING TO THE KANSAS CITY ZOO
LUNCH OUT AT LIDIA’S RESTAURANT
Occupying a former railroad house just north of Kansas City’s historic Union Station, Lidia’s evokes the warmth of an old Italian farmhouse in the coveted Crossroads area. Enjoy lunch with your friends this month at this fun eatery! The BSP bus departs at 11:15 on Thursday, April 13. Please sign up with the Madison or
Jefferson concierge.
Musician Max Levy has a unique and spirited approach when performing music. He produces a robust sound reminiscent of swing and early bebop masters like Gene Ammons, Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins. Max is currently completing a master of arts in music with a jazz emphasis at the UMKC Conservatory of Music. Put your hands together for the Max Levy Trio as the group brings their energy to the Madison Living Room at 3:00 on Thursday, April 27.
Residents of Kansas City, Missouri, are supporters of the zoo through a one-eighth-cent sales tax paid by those who purchase items in Jackson or Clay County. The zoo offers a free-entry day and we plan to capitalize on their generous offer this month! A visit to our zoo is a journey around the world, an interactive experience that entertains, educates and engages visitors of all ages. The BSP bus will leave at 10:00 on Thursday, April 20, so remember to sign up with a concierge soon. This should be a delightful spring morning excursion to enjoy with your friends!
THE GREAT COURSES: MUSEUM MASTERPIECES OF THE MET
MOVIE CLASSIC WITH ROBERT BUTLER
Where else can you find masterpieces extending from the dawn of civilization to today; encyclopedic holdings from all the major cultures on earth; genres ranging from paintings to period rooms, sculpture to suits of armor, metalwork to musical instruments — all situated in a palatial building beside one of the world's most magnificent parks? In his visually-rich lectures, Professor Richard Brettell takes us again through The Metropolitan Museum of Art in a personal tour driven by his enthusiasm and ceaseless curiosity. This month, lectures three (Ancient Egyptian Art) and four
(Asian Art) will be held at 3:00 on Wednesday, April 26, in the Westport Room.
Adam’s Rib is director George Cukor's famous film of the battle of the sexes — this one between two married lawyers. The Oscar-nominated screenplay for the sparkling, MGM classic screwball comedy of the post-war years was way ahead of its time. It was written by the husband and wife team of Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. Come enjoy Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn as Adam and Amanda Bonner as they are both drawn into a case of attempted murder. Robert Butler is our host again at 2:00 on Friday, April 7, in the Westport Room.

GARDEN TIME
The robins have been working on the crabapples, both in the tree and on the ground outside my window. When I was a child, we considered seeing a robin as the first sign of spring. These days, robins are in Kansas City year-round. You might say they are part of nature’s gardeners, cleaning up the dropped berries and then dropping the seeds. Human gardeners have been at work, too, cleaning flower beds and pruning bushes. If you are thinking of gardening, see below for information about the resident garden beds. — Article written by Barbara Lee

GARDEN BEDS AVAILABLE
BSP LIBRARY INFORMATION & NEWS
Would you like to plant flowers or veggies? We have two 6’ x 7’ raised garden beds available on the north side of the Madison Building (exit closest to Windsor Care) where you can plant your own little garden. The north half of the west bed is already reserved, but the south half of that bed is available, and all of the east bed is available. Let Bill Buckner know which of these three remaining half-beds you wish to reserve for your gardening pleasure. For your convenience, soaker hoses are in both beds, so watering will be automatic. Join in the fun and satisfaction of your own garden!
Our libraries off of the Madison Living Room and in the Westport Room house books for BSP residents to enjoy. Please check books out and in at the Madison Library by entering the books’ names and your name in the register on the round table and return books to the basket located by the window (please do not re-shelve them). Books in the Westport Room are in less demand, so it is not necessary to check them out. Please feel free to borrow books and return them to the wooden basket available on the north wall bookshelf. Many thanks are due to Susie Harman, who works tirelessly to keep the libraries in order and up to date. In other library news: in memory of Douglas Gilmore, the family has generously donated subscriptions to several magazines, including The Week, The Economist, The London Book Review and more.
