WHO IS RESPONSIBLEFOR YOUR WELL BEING?

Page 42: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

YOU ARE!

Page 43: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

The single most important way you can help to

prevent errors is to be an active member of your

health care team.

Page 44: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

Make sure that all of your doctors know about

everything you are taking: this includes prescription

and over-the-counter medicines, and dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbs.

Page 45: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

Make sure your doctor knows

about any allergies and adverse

reactions you have had to medicines

Page 46: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

When your doctor writes you a prescription, make

sure you can read it!

Page 47: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

ASK FOR INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR MEDICINES

What is the medicine for? How am I supposed to take it, and for

how long? What side effects are likely? What do I do

if they occur? Is this medicine safe to take with other

medicines or dietary supplements I am taking?

What food, drink, or activities should I avoid while taking this medicine?

Page 48: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

Double check again when you get your medicine from the drug store.

Make sure that you get a written sheet from the

drug store

Page 49: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

If you have lab work make sure that you are told the results

Page 50: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation

When you go to see your doctor take someone responsible with you.

Write down questions you have before you go to the doctor’s office.

Take a pen and paper with you to write down what the

doctor tells you.

Page 51: Audio-visual equipment provided through a grant by Texas Medical Association Foundation
