THE SKILLS OF LISTENING

Tests have shown that even well- motivatedstudents often remember little more than halfof what they hear immediately after they haveheard itand probably no more than a fourthof it after a two-month interval.' With so muchattention being given in schools to the commu-nication of information by spoken and audio-visual means (as contrasted with reading, forexample), it is clear that activities calculatedto improve listening skill3 deserve seriousstudy.

Teachers who believe that good listeninghabits and skills are "taught, not caught" may

mact on this belief in several ways. First, theymay consider the purposes to which the act oflistening is put in everyday life. These purposesare sometimes categorized as "practical" and"recreational."2 Examples ofpractical uses oflistening include:

Clearly hearing and understanding informa-tion, interpreting it, and acting upon it

Understanding and following assignmentsand directions

Obtaining answers to questionsGathering additional data for purposes of

judging likely consequences of proposedcourses of action

Learning how to act in new situationsIdentifying and evaluating truth, accuracy,

bias, propaganda

Several recreational uses of listening are rep-resented by the following examples:

Detecting humor, understanding its mean-ing, and enjoying it

Enjoying escape from real life by becomingabsorbed in themes and events portrayed inmaterials listened to

Enjoying sensory images by grasping themeaning of what is heard and by visualizingin imagination some of the. ideas acquireda Experiencing and -enjoying vicariously theemotional reactions and expressions of feel-ings and ideals through romantic tales, senti-mental verses, or dramatizations of mysterystoriesa Enjoying the rhythm and the quality andsuitability of expression in prose and poetry

A second way in which teachers must con-cern themselves with listening . is to analyzewhat efficient listeners are expected to do.Duker3 identifies six tasks essential to the

"process of listening." He states that the goodlistener should:

Prepare himself for the act of listening, ap-proaching the activity with an attitude ofinquiry and focusing upon it his previousknowledge of the subject at hand.

Know what was said, separating this fromwhat he expected to hear, what he would haveliked to hear, or what he believes he ought tohave heard.

Retain selectively what he hearsselectingimportant points or content worth remain-hering. .

Analyze what he hearsas it is heard andlater (as he reviews what was heard).

Evaluate what he hearsas to its objectivity,bias, authority, or logic.

React to what he hearsusing it in waysoriginally intended in the general plan of itspresentation.

Having identified some important purposesto be achieved through listening Lnd the proc-esses of achieving them., it remains for theteacher who wishes to improve the listeningskills of his classes to find opportunities forthoughtfully practicing listening in situationsin which such skills are needed and used. Manysuch opportunities present themselves in theclassroom. As examples, students may beasked to:

Summarize main points contained in broad-casts or recorded lectures, debates, documen-tary films, or dramatizationsII Prepare written outlines based on notestaken during listening experiencessuch out-.

Understand nonverbal cues in musictim-ing, sound effects, and similar devicesa Discern and identify various soundschar-acteristic tones of orchestral instruments, sing-ing voices, choral or instrumental groupss Recognize and appreciate the form and con-

Recognize voices of well-known actors, per-sonages, or musical performers

Additional assignments related to the im-provement of listening skills may also be used.As two examples only, students may be askedto grasp and evaluate points of view, facts,prejudices, or inaccuracies revealed in broad-casts or recordings to which they listen; orthey may be asked to make inferences fromlistening materials without going beyond datapresented (learning to hear accurately withoutinjecting one's own point of view or additionalinformation).

Note taking has often been praised as onemeans of improving the ability of students tofollow, to comprehend, and to evaluate listen-ing experiences. When properly done (i.e., sys-tematically, sparingly), note taking focuses thelistener's attention upon important words,keeps him "on the track," and facilitates reviewof what has been said.

A creative teacher can make good use of either Spanish or English byrecording a narration that is suitable to the needs of the class. Here'show:

with the sequence.3. Show the film again and use a tape recorder to record your

narration to accompany the picture. (NOTE: Use a specialist forlanguage) Gear the narration to the comprehension level of yourstudents.
