AUDIENCE PROFILING

Age

Hip-Hop and Rap are both genres which actually only traget younger people. I researched the target audience from other magazines, such as ‘the source’, ‘complex’ and ‘XXL’. All magazines target an audience ranged between 16-40.

My magazine is also going to target young people, as low as the age of 16, as these teenagers, are very a very active audience, which would like the style of the magazine. The magazine also targets people as old as 40, as these middle aged people, still enjoy to relax, and to read about the music they love, which makes the fact that the magazine is more visual suitable for booth age limits.

TrendsA typical Rap Fan would wear sneakers, baggy jeans, a hoodie and a cap. Also it is known that many Hip-Hop and Rap fans either take up skate boarding or BMX cycling as a hobby.Research also shows that people who listen to Rap are more likely to prefer to be outside and to socialise, compared to staying is side.

Target Audience

My magazine will target people aged between 16 and 40. The genre has become mainstream, which means that it is no longer restricted to the lower income brackets associated with its origins. A lot of the hip hop magazines have quite a lot of copy (text) and this challenges class and cultural stereotypes about the genre. The consumers targeted are in between income groups B and H.As my research showed me that Rap and Hip-Hop magazines are mostly bought my men, I will also direct the magazine to more target men.Religion and Nationality are more or less irrelevant.

Young and Rubicam Maslow’s Hierarchy

The audience of my magazine in terms of the Young and Rubicam theory, would be aspirer or explorer, due to the motivating and ‘from rags to riches’ message, which is being passed over in many songs.

Looking at Maslow's theory of hierarchy, it would be hard, to decide for one specific level in the hierarchy pyramid, as Hip-Hop is a very ranged genre. I would see the target audience somewhere between Physiological and Love/Belonging.

Problems with Audience

As seen in the table below, people are now illegally downloading excessive content. The reason being, the fact that you don’t have to pay for the content, and downloading takes a lot less time, an can be done from home, making it a lot more efficient for the person. This trend could have an enormous effect on the music magazine, seeing as anything the magazine writes about the audience, or fans could be incorrect, as there is o specific data collected or the illegal downloads.

Millenials

Millenials are very crucial to my magazine, as they make up the target audience. Due to Millenials in average having a high disposable income, it is very important for me to please that audience. This group of people puts a lot of emphasis on what they wear, and general fashion, which makes them crucial as a consumer, as my magazine features clothes and new trends, which will interest those people. This kind of people are very modern. They almost all have converged devices, which let them use the internet on the go, and as my magazine is also very much internet based and promoting, it automatically appeals to Millenials
