Audience for Warriors

Audience for WarriorsBy Chloe WakefieldTarget Audience:When researching recommendations for other artists when buying the Warriors E.P. by Coco and the Butterfields, I noticed that other bands of the folk genre were listed, such as Gentlemen of Few. This benefited me in identifying my target audience by highlighting other artists of similar genres. These bands would therefore share a similar audience which I deduced to be white-British males and females between 16-25 years old. Furthermore, our music video features a 18 year old female who is guided through different fairy tales, detaching herself from reality. This therefore appeals and relates to those of a similar age through the scenarios in which an audience can associate with; distancing themselves from reality by creating an illusion.

Target Audience Continued:Our music video features mise en scene of a mysterious tea cup in which triggers the fairy tales after Danielle drinks from it. The subtle hint of drugs targets our audience by creating a relatable situation where young people need some form of escapism. Therefore, the fairy tale scene, in contrast to reality, highlights this illusory escape that Danielle is representing.

Alternatively, the tea cup targets a broader audience through the common association with afternoon teas and popular brands such as Cath Kidston and its floral designs. This contemporary design thus targets a contemporary audience through its popularity and recognisability providing an aesthetic appeal.

Target Audience Continued:Our music video also frequently features a male character who portrays classic fairy tale characters such as Hansel and the Mad Hatter. This broadens our audience to a male demographic, much like the character of Danielle and the female demographic. By continuing with the binary opposition of illusion and reality, a relatable situation is created for young people and the need to escape. The theme of escapism is further demonstrated through the outdoor locations, suggesting the lack of confinement to houses and the need to be free. Whilst there is a short house scene within our music video, the lead character soon escapes to appeal to the adventurous qualities of young people who are advancing from teenagers to adults and therefore, in society, have to grow up.

Target Audience Continued:My group and I carefully considered costume to aesthetically appeal to a contemporary audience whilst maintaining a nostalgic effect. For example, the Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel costumes were archetypal, yet it featured modern clothing that allowed the target audience to maintain their interest. By featuring clothing from popular high street stores such as H&M and Topshop, my group and I are directly targeting our contemporary audience by creating an aesthetic appeal that they can recognise and relate to.This is similar to AlunaGeorges video Attracting Flies where their intertextual reference to fairy tales with a contemporary, clever twist appeals to a similarly aged audience of our music video. The relatable association explicitly suggests their audience by conforming to stereotypes such as hoodies. This then creates a relatable association that targets their audience, to maintain their interest.
