This closely observed portrait by George Pemba exhibits the mastery over the medium of watercolour for which he is celebrated. The portrait is most likely a life study, which was done fairly quickly, but in which Pemba has captured a clear likeness and an exquisite sense of light falling on the subject’s earnest and somewhat resigned face. Lize van Robbroeck argues that Pemba’s portraits of African subjects are more than simple exercises in depiction, but rather serve to illustrate his “African Nationalist subjectivity” and attempt to give voice to a new African identity (2008: 218). In this way, what seems like a neutral portrait is in fact a political statement, in which Pemba seeks to use “the ‘universal language’ of art-making to bridge the gap between colonizer and colonized” (2008: 219). This is manifest in this painting of an African woman, which closely resembles portraits by European masters in pose and style – making the claim that profi ciency in painting is not unique to only one culture and also that the African subject bears a close likeness to the ‘coloniser’ when represented on these terms. This is reinforced by an entry from Pemba’s journal in which he states a desire for his paintings to depict the common humanity of all people: “in the end black and white will discover that both are only men” (quoted in Miles 1997: 72). Sam Nhlengethwa typically produces colourful images using collaged material, primarily made up of faces, making this large work characteristic of his style. The faces, which have been carefully cut out of magazines and newspapers, are combined into a crowd of people standing at a traffi c light. Some wear the clothes they were imaged in and others have been clothed by Nhlengethwa in bold fl at colours. While still creating a sense of real depth, the shift in sizes of the faces, the transition of some into black and white and the harshly cut edges – some losing the tops of their heads – disrupts the suspension of disbelief in the image. It also disguises some of the more enigmatic characters, like the young girl in the bottom right who seems to be resting her head on the yellow chest of the woman above her. In one sense, Nhlengethwa creates a fairly common scene in that he brings together strangers – maybe waiting to cross the street at the traffi c light – but, in another sense, the combination of characters and the uneasiness of the way they share space propels this image into something more. Skotnes, Cecil Edwin Frans (South African 1926 - 2009)Still lifeCarved, incised and painted panel with copper frame by the artist, signed120 x 123cm R180 000 – R220 000

In this still life, Cecil Skotnes presents a meeting point between his typically African-inspired style and a traditional Western genre. Imaged from above, Skotnes presents the square top of a table and varies the perspective of the objects thereon in a typical Cubist approach; showing some from above and some in side-view. It is likely that in at least one additional still life he used the same objects, particularly the set of fi sh bones, the central white cloth and the eggs (both whole and as cracked shells), suggesting that this was a meditation on the objects as well as the approach. The largest object on the table is a mask, which is contained in a bowl of some sorts, in a similar way to the food surrounding it. As noted by Professor Michael Godby in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition Is there Still Life? (shown at the Old Town House in Cape Town 2007), it was popular among South African artists who had been trained in the European tradition to include African art objects in their still life compositions. Notably, in the mid twentieth century, Irma Stern repeatedly introduced African objects into her paintings. This combination of African and Western approaches gives a sense of hybridity and displays the negotiation of identity which Skotnes and many other white South African artists continue to face. Hodgins, Robert Griffi ths (South African 1920 - 2010)Trotsky and LeninOil on canvas, signed, 199891 x 122cm R200 000 – R300 000

Robert Hodgins is well known for his depictions of men in power, but in most of his images they are unnamed stereotypes. This portrait of two Russian revolutionaries is thus extraordinary in that it embeds particular histories within Hodgins’ usual theme. In the image, Trotsky stands before Lenin in an overwhelmingly red room. The fi gures themselves are also red and are differentiated only by the simply painted black details, very slight white edges and exaggerated blue shadows. The dominant colour of the painting is undoubtedly a reference to the Communist movement and the Red Army, which was founded by Leon Trotsky in 1918. In many of Hodgins’ images, abstract shapes create space and depth, but the abstract black square, which stands as if on a wall behind the two fi gures, is surely a reference to Kazmir Malevich’s Black Square (1915). The famous Russian abstract artist pioneered the avant-garde Suprematism at roughly the same time as the October Revolution and was clearly infl uenced by the political ideologies of Vladimir Lenin and Trotsky. However, not even ten years later, after the death of Lenin, Malevich’s radical style was unwelcome in Joseph Stalin’s tightly controlled Soviet Union and many of his works were confi scated. S V*
