119 W 6d Black block of 15 reconstructed from a block of 9 [Pos 38-40,43-45,48-50], block of 4 [Pos 41-42,46-47] and a pair [Pos 36-37] SG #102. Few stain spots on reverse, some of which show throughto the face, but condition is generally very fine. The piece has an official knife slit between the 2ndand 3rd columns to correct an off-centre line of perforations, and traces of the marginal imprintappear along the base, Cat £4,825++. The block of 9 is Ex Lee, Purves and Perry and is the largestrecorded multiple, The block of 4 (Ex Burrus) is one of only two known, the other being in the Royal

collection. The premier surviving piece of this very difficult stamp.If this lot is unsold it will be re-offered as its individual components in the next three lots. $7,000

120 W 6d Black pair [Pos 36-37] SG #102 from the previous UNSOLD reconstructed from a block of 15. $1,200

121 W 6d Black, block of 4 [Pos 41-42,46-47] SG #102, from the previous UNSOLD reconstructed block of15. Condition is generally very fine. This piece has an official knife slits at the top and right edge tocorrect an off-centre line of perforations, Cat £1,300++. This block of 4 (Ex Burrus) is one of only twoknown, the other being in the Royal collection. $2,400

122 W 6d Black block of 9 [Pos 38-40,43-45,48-50] SG #102, from the previous UNSOLD reconstructedblock of 15. 128 U 6d Black SG #102 reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 50, including six pairs, Pos 36duplicated and Pos 2 with portion of marginal imprint. Condition well above average for this stampand many fine examples included. For this stamp the two blocks of 25 were reversed compared totheir positions in the orange printings, and two impressions were fitted on the sheet of watermarkedpaper, one above the other with a marginal imprint inserted between the upper and lower blocks. Thefinest of the very few reconstructions which have been achieved. (51 stamps). $3,000

ValueTwo Pounds Ten Shillings.’ which was placed between upper and lower blocks of 50 in the printedsheet. Comprising used examples from the base of the upper block [Pos 48, 49, 50, 22, 23] and fromthe top of the lower block [Pos 28, 29, 30, 1, 2, 3], missing only [Pos 21.] A very difficult reconstructionto assemble, and this is the most complete one available. Ex Purves. (11 stamps). $2,000

Minor cover imperfections but generally fine, the stamps cancelled Barred Numeral ‘120’,and [Pos 48] showing fragments of the imprint. The equal largest multiple on cover, and the onlyrecorded usage of the 6d black to USA. [1/8d ½oz rate to the USA via Marseilles.] $1,800

Large part of back flapmissing and reverse with other faults, and small piece of envelope missing at top (repaired).Underpaid for Marseilles routing, and ‘Deficient Postage/ Fine ______’ in red applied on arrival, and9d collected from the addressee. The postage should have been 9d for a ¼oz letter, so a charge of6d (2d deficient plus 4d fine) should have been the correct charge. A unique 6d black usage. ExForster and Perry. $800

133 * 6d Black partially severed block of 3 [Pos 33,38-39] SG #102 used on OHMS registered 1861 (Jul31) cover from Chewton (fine backstamp) to Sydney, with ‘SHIP LETTER/ SYDNEY’ arrival cds onreverse. Stamps show typical staining from the dark gum used on this issue, and cover with a fewstain spots, but a rare usage being the equal largest recorded franking of this stamp on entire. ExPack, Forster and Perry. [6d intercolonial ship letter rate plus 1/- registration rate.] $1,500

Two unused pairs are recorded in private hands, the only otherunused multiples being two strips of 3 in institutional collections. A major Woodblock rarity and keyVictorian multiple. Ex Ferrary, Boker and Perry. $5,000

137 * 6d Lilac and Green [Pos 9] SG #33 overprinted ‘SPECIMEN’ Type 10, part original gum, and fainthorizontal crease of no significance. Produced in 1879 when a number of obsolete Victorian stampswere overprinted with the contemporary handstamp. Two examples now exist, the other being in theRoyal Collection. A third was known in the Purves collection but was destroyed in the Ash Wednesdaybushfires. This stamp must rank as one of the most important and desirable Victorian Specimenstamps. Illustrated in The Specimen Stamps of Victoria by Kellow, Turner and McCredie, page 23. $3,500

All stamps with good tolarge margins except 6d Woodblock touched at left, Too Late pair with stain in left margin of upperunit, the 2d and 6d cancelled indecipherable Barred Oval, and the Too Late pair with manuscript“Registered”. A remarkable unauthorised usage of the Too Late pair to prepay the 1/- registration fee.This combination piece was recorded in the literature in 1894 as a complete cover, sadly it was laterreduced to its present state. Printed from an unadopted key plate, the most obvious difference being the smallwords ‘ONE’ and ‘SHILLING’ below the bust which appear horizontal on this essay but curved in theissued stamps. Unique in this colour combination, and a very important Woodblock rarity. Ex Nissen

171 U 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 1, SG #34 reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 25 with Type 1Aoverprints. The stamps are much above average quality and largely free of faults, all with 4 marginsexcept two which are just touched, and [Pos 4 and 15] show marginal selvedge. Position 69 isrouletted. Additionally, there is an example of [Pos 9] in its 2nd state. The sheets of 100 of the firstand second printings comprised the block of 25 printed four times, with the overprint added at asecond operation from a block of 50 in two groups of 25 (Types 1A and 1B), printed two times tocomplete the sheet. This correctly plated reconstruction of 25 with Type 1A overprints is the only onethat has ever been achieved. (26 stamps). $4,000

The stamps are much above average quality and mostly free of faults, exceptseveral are touched or just cut into. The reconstruction lacks [Pos 13 and 14], but includes twoadditional [Pos 20], being the late damaged state and its substitution. For the third printing, the Die1 and 2 plates were used together, with a new overprint forme of 100 which finished the sheet in oneoperation. The four blocks of 25 comprising the overprint plate are termed Types 2A and 2B (on Die1) and Types 2C and 2D (on Die 2). Since no multiples are known from this printing, it is not possibleto advance the plating of the groups far, and the overprints have been arbitrarily divided into groupsof 25, termed Sub-types 3 and 4 for those on Die 1 stamps. This lot represents a unique assembly ofplated material from this scarce printing. (25 stamps). $4,000

Only three examples of the cracked plate variety are known,the other two being in the Royal Collection and the Public Museum of Victoria. The most importantplate variety in all the Woodblock issues.
