As the 2013 calendar year comes to an end, your Auckland Leadership

Team (ALT) and its sub-groups, the Auckland Public Practice and Auckland Corporate Sector sub-groups are taking time to reflect on a great year, featuring a number of very successful events and seeing record numbers of our members engaging with NZICA through many different events including conferences, PD programmes, Special Interest groups, New Members’ ceremonies, Milestone Members’ events and many student events including Executive Insight and Auckland Ignition for tertiary students.

Planning for next year’s events is

well under way with a key upcoming

event being the Accountants’ One Day

Business Update on 12 March 2014 at

Sky City. In past years this event has

been an outstanding success and has

become a feature event on our calendar.

The event provides a lineup of quality

speakers, a great venue and a full day of

quality PD. My special congratulations

and thanks to our Corporate Sector sub-

group members who contribute many

volunteer hours to make this event

such a success. For members who did

not manage to attend this year, register

early and avoid missing out on the 2014

event as this event always sells out.

Our Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

continue to build on a very successful

formula for engaging with our members

and this year we saw some SIGs with

record numbers of registrations from

members. Some of our SIGs are now

broadcasting their sessions live via

webinar links and it provides members

with an opportunity to attend the

2013 A YEAR TO REFLECT UPON

sessions without having to travel

through Auckland traffic. The dedicated

Chairs of our SIGs continue their

outstanding work to provide quality

speakers on topical issues. SIGs provide

you a great forum to catch up on

your CPD hours and provide valuable

networking opportunities with other

like-minded members. Now is the time

to renew those SIG memberships for

next year and enjoy the wonderful

benefits that these groups provide. If

you are new and haven’t previously

attended a SIG meeting, I urge you to

contact our Auckland Regional Manager,

Anne Stevenson (anne.stevenson@

nzica.com) and she will help select the

right one for you.

We have lots planned to happen next

year. Please take the opportunity and

come along to one of the many events

and PD programmes that we host for

you. It is exciting and encouraging to see

record numbers of members come along

to our events.

This year will be remembered for the

vote for the One New Institute. The “yes”

vote for NZICA and ICAA to merge into

the One New Institute signals a lot of

work ahead in the next 12 to 18 months

to ensure a smooth implementation

process and delivery of outcomes by the

new organisation.

As 2013 draws to a close, I would like

to take the opportunity to make special

mention and say a huge thank you to

Jeff Barkwill, Chair of our Auckland

Corporate Sector sub-group as he is

stepping down after many years of

significant contribution to NZICA and to

our Auckland members. Jeff is a special

person whose contribution to NZICA is

vast. Thank you, Jeff, for all your years of

dedicated service. The other person that

I would like to recognize and say thank

you to is Dr Rowena Sinclair of AUT and

a member of our ALT. Rowena is also

stepping down at the end of the year.

She has made a special contribution to

our ALT and will be missed.

2014 will see a new ALT take office,

together with a new Chair. Our

succession planning has worked well,

as all returning members are capable

of becoming the new Chair and I wish

them every success in selecting a new

Chair and for the contribution the ALT

will make.

After nearly 11 years’ involvement with

the Auckland Branch and the Auckland

Office, I will be stepping down from

my role as Chair of the ALT. It has been

an incredible and wonderful journey. I

have thoroughly enjoyed every moment

of being involved with NZICA and our

members and it has helped me grow

immensely. I have made so many

wonderful friends and many who have

provided great support and advice

throughout the years. I would like to

acknowledge each one of you and say a

very special thank you.

As Chair of the ALT, it has been a real

pleasure to have hosted and attended

many events for our members. The

special moments of listening to our

members at Milestone Members’

Ceremonies, sharing stories of their

careers, the hardship they endured in

the early years and how they have seen

the profession change during their time

as members and at our New Members’

Ceremonies, seeing the pride, joy and

happiness of families and our members

on becoming a member of NZICA have

been truly memorable moments.

There is one particular moment that

really stands out for me and something

that I will remember for a very long

time. At our new members’ ceremony

on 6 September 2011, we had over 450

guests and new members attending.

New member, Inna Rudyy-Collie, who

was to attend this ceremony tragically

died in an unfortunate accident a few

weeks earlier. We invited her husband

INTRODUCING NATALIENATALIE FAIDLEY joined NZICA Auckland as a Learning and

Development Coordinator on 2 October 2013. Natalie comes

to us from Grant Thornton where she was part of the Human

Resources team. Her role included recruitment, training, payroll

and human resources. Prior to this she worked at Gaze Burt, a law

firm in Auckland city, as a Personal Assistant to the HR Manager

and the Employment Law Partner.

Natalie’s role in the NZICA team is to develop, plan and organise Auckland

professional development courses. She also coordinates two Auckland Special

Interest Groups – Business Development Specialists and Tax. Natalie sees this role

as a great opportunity to review the current professional development that is taking

place for Auckland members and expand the range of professional development so

that the courses can relate to all members.

In her spare time Natalie enjoys playing netball, reading, movies and spending time

with her family and friends.

MEMBERS GIVE NEW INSTITUTE PROPOSAL THE GREEN LIGHTOn 1 November 2013, NZICA and the Institute of

Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) announced

that members had voted in favour of amalgamating

and creating a new trans-Tasman body.

The following results have been scrutineered and are confirmed:

ICAA – 37,423 (61.5%) members voted. 77.95% voted for the proposal

NZICA – 16,876 (58.7%) members voted. 69.61% voted for the proposal

Members can expect regular updates over the coming months to outline progress

on the transition plan and milestones. Transition to the New Institute has begun

already, but before the New Institute can be completed the necessary changes to

the NZICA Act and Royal Charter in Australia must be secured. These are expected

to happen by April 2014.

The New Institute’s vision is to become ‘the trusted leaders in business and

finance’ and it will provide the scale that members need on the world stage. The

New Institute proposal promises to deliver approximately $18m in annual net

cost savings, the benefits of which would be passed on to members in a range of

measures, including greater investment in education, services, policy, advocacy,

thought leadership and fee reductions for most members.

2013 POST-PCE DRINKS

The story behind the Martin Jetpack and

an expert panel of CFO’s from three of New

Zealand’s leading businesses operating

offshore attracted a sold-out audience

of over 200 people to the 2013 NZICA

National Conference on 26 November.

Peter Coker OBE, and CEO of Martin

Aircraft Company – the Christchurch

based inventors of the Jetpack –

captivated the audience with the

story of the kiwi ingenuity behind the

amazing technology and the plan for its

commercial launch.

This presentation was followed by a

panel discussion on the theme: New

Zealand Business Offshore: Insights

from Leaders with a Global Focus. Led

by NZICA Councillor Murray Taylor

FACA, the panel included three leading

CFO’s – Rob McDonald FCA (Air New

Zealand), David Sullivan CA (Fisher &

Paykel Appliances), and Merv Dallas

CA (Zespri International). All three

panellists gave tremendous insights

into their experience and key learnings

in operating New Zealand business in

international markets.

The newly formed academic

stakeholders’ group has had great

success since its inception. The group is

made up of representatives from local

universities and polytechnics, secondary

school teachers, CETA (commerce and

economic teachers association) and

NZICA staff.

The group has worked well in examining

how we can work together to offer

tomorrow’s members support and

guidance. We look forward to continuing

this worthwhile initiative and creating

a community of shared interest

across local education stakeholders

in 2014. If you are an academic CA or

schoolteacher who would like to be

involved in the stakeholders group,

please let me know.

As we come to the end of the academic

year, we have two events left from

the education portfolio. The first is

our Auckland Ignition event. NZICA

has hosted several successful Career

speed dating events over the last

few years and through these events,

gathered research from both students

and employers alike. One of the main

concerns was that many students

lacked fundamental knowledge of the

different organisations and roles within

the accounting profession. To meet this

challenge NZICA is pleased to announce

“Ignition” which aims to educate

students on what organisations they

could work for, the available roles and

the all-round skills needed when

job hunting.

The second is the annual Auckland

teachers update day, which provides

teachers an insight into developments

in business and accounting that they

can take back and apply directly in

their classroom. At the time of writing,

the event had a record 51 teachers

attending from across the region. This is

significantly more than in the past and

evidence of the success that NIZCA is

having in the secondary space.

As the academic year closes, the

remainder of my 2013 will be spent

building awareness of the rejuvenated

College of Accounting Technicians

(AT College). There are two new

pathways to the profession that give

prospective Accounting Technicians

(AT), from a broad range of industries

and backgrounds, the ability to expand

career opportunities and earn while

they learn. If you are interested in some

information or in a presentation to your

team about the benefits of being an AT

please let me know.

Finally I would like to congratulate all

the Auckland University students who

received NZICA prizes at the University

of Auckland’s Department of Accounting

and Finance scholarship and prize

awards evening, which was attended by

Peter Vial, NZICA General Manager-Tax

and myself..

NZICA proudly sponsored the prizes for

best scholar across a selection of core

accounting papers.

EXECUTIVE INSIGHT 2013A special luncheon and awards ceremony was held in Auckland on 30 October 2013 to acknowledge the participants and host organisations involved in the 2013 Executive Insight programme.

Executive Insight winner Nicholas Chong-Adams with Michael Van Druten, CFO, Eurovintage

Executive Insight is a national programme for second and

third-year accounting students.

Each student on the programme is allocated to a host organisation

for a one-to-three day insight into how senior management works

and is then required to write a 1,500 word report summarising

their experience. Judges Skye Daniels, Dale Gray and Murray

Taylor representing the Auckland corporate sector then

assessed the reports and selected the best three submissions.

Congratulations to Nicholas Chong-Adams from the University of

Auckland, winner of Best Report for 2013. Nicholas was hosted

by Eurovintage and received the winner’s certificate, an $800

prize from NZICA and an Apple iPhone from Skinny Mobile.

Hi everyone. Hard to believe that the end of the year is upon us. Most practitioners I talk to have experienced a very busy and challenging year – it certainly is a time of change for the accounting profession. Let’s hope members can work together as a profession to navigate through these changes and make the most of the positive opportunities that will arise.

NZICA NORTHLAND NEWS

NORTHLAND LEADERSHIP TEAM CHAIR’S REPORT

Northland had a solid 60% turn out as

we voted on the future of our profession.

It will be interesting times over the next

eighteen months as the strategy for the

One New Institute becomes a reality.

The Local Membership Teams for 2014

have now been appointed. Northland

welcomes Arturo Robiso of Northpower

to the team. Arturo will be a great

representative for the corporate sector;

his strengths particularly in terms

of International Financial Reporting

Standards and working with Audit

Committees bring valuable diversity

to the group. I would like to take this

opportunity to thank the 2013 LLT

members along with Councillor Chris

Pool for all the time and energy they

have donated over the past 12 months.

The LLT have hosted some great local

training events over the past few

months. The Maori Land Trusts and

Incorporations course was very well

attended. It was excellent to have

Wayne Coutts from Thomson Wilson

Law as a presenter. Leon Wijohn,

Deloitte Private Partner and National

Maori Business Sector Leader along

with Mark Lash, Tax Partner, also of

Deloitte, provided a practical analysis of

governance structures associated with

treaty settlements.

The merry makeover and Christmas

mirth social event will have taken place

MILESTONE MEMBERSHIPS

by the time this edition of the Northern

Connection goes to print. For 2013 it

was our aim to try something different

and unique. I’m sure a good night would

have been had by all in attendance. It

was great to secure a guest appearance

from first class comedian Steve Wrigley,

well known for his appearances on the

TV Show “7 Days”. For those of you

disappointed that the golf event did not

take place this year – don’t despair – it

will be back.

The lawn bowls has been a popular

summer event which will be held

again in the New Year. Look out for

this evening which is a lot of fun and

presents a great opportunity to network

with fellow members.

As Chair of the LLT, in November I

attended a National Conference with

the other Chairpersons from around the

country as well as the Annual General

Meeting and Leadership Awards.

National events such as these provide an

excellent platform for the views of local

members to be aired and discussed.

I hope everyone has a wonderful break

over the Christmas period. I’m sure we

will all come back feeling refreshed and

ready to get back into it again in 2014.

Best Wishes

NZICA AUCKLAND NEWS

TAX REPORT: WE CAME, WE SAW….In November and early December the

NZICA tax team went on road trips around

New Zealand delivering the Tax and

Inland Revenue Update (aka The Branch

Visits). In keeping with tradition the team

was joined by Inland Revenue staff who

kept members up to date on issues and

developments from IR’s perspective.

Tax is a moving feast and the team is

committed to helping members stay

one step ahead. Face-to-face delivery

of the constant changes is a key part of

their role and a great way for members

to get to know them.

Look out for the next time the NZICA tax

team are in your area and come and say

“G’day.”

WHAT WE’VE BEEN SAYING

The Branch Visits have not put a stop

to the tax team’s efforts in the tax

policy and advocacy area. Meetings and

discussions with senior Inland Revenue

staff and officials take place regularly.

Recent topics of discussion include:

> R&D tax loss proposals

> Residence

> Allowances

> Deductibility of a companion’s travel expenses

> Trading stock taken for own use

> GST issues.

Another tax bill was introduced into

Parliament in November 2013. Formal

submissions will be made early in the

new year.

WHAT YOU’VE BEEN SAYING – INLAND REVENUE SERVICE

The results of the 2013 NZICA-Tax

Management New Zealand Inland

Revenue Satisfaction Survey were

released in early November.

Highlights of the results are:

> Overall satisfaction levels have fallen – the downward trend is gradual but continuous.

> IR’s phone service has given rise to the most concern followed by processing.

> The key issues with audits are:

– Slow response times

– Inland Revenue not “considering fairly” the points raised

– Inland Revenue not providing an estimate of the time required for the audit or under delivering against an estimate.

This year members were asked about

their awareness of and the effects on

their business of changes in Inland

Revenue’s published view or position

eg accommodation allowances and

residence. Results indicated that:

> Over half of members were aware of the changes to Inland Revenue’s position.

> Many were aware of the changes because of NZICA activity (e.g. attended an NZICA seminar).

> Inland Revenue may need to consider doing more to raise awareness and consult more widely on changes to their position.

> Many members think position changes create uncertainty and complexity.

The full survey report will be available

on the NZICA web site.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPSSpecial Interest groups (SIGs) meet on a regular basis and provide great opportunities for networking with like-minded members.

There is a wide range of topics available and most meetings qualify for CPD hours.

NZICA Auckland currently has 17 SIGs to choose from which from late December you can register online at www.nzica.com/events;

or download a subscription form from the NZICA SIG website. Car parking at the adjacent Wilson’s Gateway car park is included in

the subscriptions.

For more information on joining please visit the SIG web pages at www.nzica.com or email: [email protected]

AUDIT

Steve Hayes CA and Allan Paul CA, Co-Chairs

The Audit Special Interest group holds up to four meetings a year on topics of interest for audit practitioners in the Auckland region. Members of the group also receive email bulletins relating to audit developments promulgated by NZICA or other professional bodies, with the intention of keeping members abreast of current audit developments.

The SIG provides networking opportunities for auditors and practical support for members on audit issues, and promotes a forum for discussion and review of audit-related standards and guidelines.

There is no annual fee to join the Audit SIG mailing list. However there is a small

charge to attend each meeting.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALISTS

Diana Petrie CA, Chair

Tired of compliance? Join the Business

Development Specialists for a monthly

dose of inspiration.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday

of each month at 4pm. You can start

with “Compliance Plus” and grow from

there. We can help you to utilise your

personal strengths to add value to your

clients’ businesses.

The group provides a monthly speaker

relevant to business development – plus

case studies and real-life experiences from

fellow practitioners and other experts.

We will help you identify your specific

"thing" (as Murray Thom says) that you

can build into your existing compliance

practice. You just need to add in one

extra-special skill that you possess and

then build a client need around that.

You don't need the latest BDS guru or

expensive tools and systems to achieve

this for your clients. You just need a

focus that you can get excited about,

which then gives you the motivation to

plan and implement. The BDS SIG can

assist you on an ongoing basis to ensure

you maintain and build upon that one

"thing" to the extent that you want to.

Not really complicated if it's kept simple

and clear. Come along to one of our

meetings. We know you will be hooked.

The Trusts group offers outstanding

value CPD hours.

The meeting programme targets leading

speakers to present on topical trust

issues in this dynamic area of law. The

speakers are all leaders in their respective

areas and are invited from around the

country to address our meetings.

For accountants who have some

involvement with trusts it is essential

that they stay up to date. Given the

substantial amount of litigation

concerning trusts and the rapid

evolution of law in this area, lack of

knowledge or failing to keep current

could prove to be costly. If you offer

services as a professional trustee this is

the perfect forum for you.

The group has been running successfully

for many years and regularly has over

250 attending the bi-monthly seminar

meetings. The group is attended by

many leading law practitioners who

provide valuable input. The inclusion of

Law Society members provides a great

opportunity to get together with our

part of our members’ continuing

professional development needs by

providing informative, interesting and

professional speakers to address various

topical issues. The group provides an
