Dear Parents and Caregivers

In 2017, one of our Site Improvement Priorities this year is to Create a Community

of Writers. As a school we have been focussing on using ‘wow phrases’ and hooks

to hook people into our writing.

Below is one of the hooks that Jake from the Middle Primary Class has used to

engage us in his writing:

“Ding!” The elevator stopped and as I walked

out of the elevator a lady screamed at the top

of her lungs. To reinforce the importance of writing it is essential

that we as parents model writing at home and create

authentic writing experiences at home for our chil-

dren.

Parenting SA has developed a fact sheet called More than

reading and writing which has many ideas about this.

Some of their suggestions include:

Let children see you drawing and writing, for example

signing documents, paying bills, filling in forms, writing lists,

cards and letters

Talk about reasons for writing and drawing, for example ‘I’m

writing a shopping list so I’ll remember what to buy.’ Then get

your child to help you write the list.

Teach children by showing them how to hold pencils or use

the computer, showing them how to form letters, especially

the letters in their name

Let children practice skills by providing: paper – lined and blank, old envelopes,

letters and cards, order forms from catalogues, old diaries and cards, crayons,

chalk, pens, pencils and textas.

Encourage children to write about something they have seen or done, making a

shopping list, making books with sheets of paper stapled together - about your

child, family, animals, birthdays, shopping, a place or holiday. Get them to send

postcards when you are on holidays.

Show children their learning is important by giving them time to experiment

and practice and put their writing on the fridge and write back to them. It is

important that they see you writing too! Catherine

Week 5 Network

Learning Groups

Educators in the Mid North Partnership meet

each term in Network Learning Groups (NLG).

Our first NLG was held at Clare High School

two weeks ago.

Teachers meet in small groups with a

facilitator to pursue an area of interest. This

networking opportunity is one way to build

our educator capacity and an example of

adults being powerful learners also.

Brightpath Trial Our school is part of the DECD Brightpath

Trial. Brightpath is a tool designed to help

improve student writing skills. This year

students will write two narratives and

teachers will use an assessment ruler to

assist with mapping pieces of writing. The

tool will assist with targeted feedback to

learners and help learners to set specific

goals for their next piece of writing.

Thank you!

Thank you to all parents and students who

helped out at the two Friday Working Bees. It is

wonderful to see our school looking so tidy!

Parent Teacher Interviews Will be held on

Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th of April,

(Week10)

A questionnaire for you to fill out about your

child will be sent home shortly as well as a

note for you to select an interview time with

your child’s teacher.

Interviews are allocated on a first in first

choice basis, please return the reply slip and

questionnaire promptly to ensure your time

can be secured.

What a wonderful start to the year it has

been in Junior Primary. The students are settled

into classroom routines and getting serious about

learning with the reception students well

underway with learning their letter sounds. The

grade 1 and 2 students are learning how to write

explanations and working on using time

connectives and topic sentences in their

recount writing.

In our Unit of Inquiry, we

are learning all about houses, how they reflect our

needs, culture and environment. We are exploring

buildings and homes in our local community as

well as looking at homes from other places. This

leads really beautifully into an exploration of 2D

and 3D shapes and an investigation of materials in

Science.

We have been working in both the garden and the kitchen creating dishes

from Germany and planting bean seeds ready for the winter time.

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who have been into help us this

term. It is always so wonderful to see you each week.

To see ongoing updates of our classroom learning you can subscribe to our

class blog https://mscaspar.edublogs.org/ we would love to have you visit

and comment.

Last week we went to Booberowie Primary

School for the first YEL meeting.

This year we’re looking at the worlds resources and how we

make them sustainable.

We also brainstormed the things that

challenge our local environment.

Some of the things we came up with

were Weeds, Pests, pollution and

harvesting the natural trees.

Every group had to investigate their subject and make a power

point/ presentation on one of these environmental issues.

Our group has chosen to

investigate pests in our local

environment.

We got to meet other

schools’ students and it was

a great day and we can’t wait

till next term!

Hi Everyone,

The second governing council meeting for the year will be held this Monday. We will be welcoming

our community representatives Rhonda Seymour and Graham Richards who are going to share the

position. This is the first year in some time that a non-parent has filled this position and we are

looking forward to forging stronger ties with the Auburn Community and welcome the different

perspective these council members will bring to the table.

Sub committees

It is not too late to still be involved in the various sub-committees that we have at our school. We

invite all parents and community members who may be interested in joining a subcommittee to get

in touch with school staff or governing council members.

The subcommittees include:

Grounds sub-committee – contact person, Lisa Ziersch

Fundraising and Events – contact person, Rachelle Bartz

Site Learning and Improvement Plan & Community Engagement – contact person, Mel

McDermid

Please talk to the committee contact people or Catherine or myself for further information.

Grounds development

Grounds development planning last year lead to two major priorities for 2017. These are

redevelopment of the carpark area and the junior school entrance. Everyone’s ideas are

important and the grounds sub-committee will be brainstorming with staff, students and the wider

community to come up with a functional yet creative space which inspires learning. We aim to

have these two areas complete by the end of 2017. Please stop us in the playground or the street

and share your ideas on grounds projects.

The governing council is the parent voice, so please familiarise yourselves with who is on the

council and let us know what you think about things. Please give me a call if you have any issues

to discuss or catch one of us in the playground.

Governing Council Members 2017:

Anna Baum, Lisa Ziersch, Mel McDermid, Taryn Senar, Gavin Wilson, Matthew Miles, Rachelle

Bartz, Aliza Webb, Rhonda Seymour/Graham Richards, Catherine O’Dea, Sue Prince
