Hello Crawford County!
We are turning the world over to the next generation better than we found it. Iowa 4-H is building Iowa’s future workforce by providing youth-adult partnerships and research-based experiences. Each year we reach about one in five Iowa K-12 youth as we build skills in Iowa’s future leaders. We are celebrating our legacy and building a strong Iowa for generations to come.
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Crawford County Extension Council is happy to announce that they have decided to cover the cost of the 4-H Enrollment Fee for all Crawford County 4-Her’s for the 2019-2020 program year. Iowa 4-H is a partnership between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local Agricultural Extension Districts. The yearly $30 Enrollment Fee is an investment in each 4-H member that represents an important commitment to positive youth development in Crawford County. The fee is for all members in grades 4-12.
4-H enrollment has been open since September so members who have already paid their fee will see those payments returned to their families. If a member’s family submitted a financial aid scholarship, that money will also go to your club account.
The Crawford County Extension Council hopes that by making 4-H no cost for all new and returning 4-Her’s it will encourage growth in our county 4-H program. Please spread the word and help Crawford County 4-H build a #StrongIowa.
Sincerely,
Aubrey Houska

National 4-H Week
I would to thank everyone who participated and showed their 4-H spirit during National 4-H week.

during the week.

Stay tuned for the club that won the Enrollment Challenge!
Time to Re-Enroll!
You will need to enroll or re-enroll in 4-H using
4-HOnline just like every year. Need help? Use the
help sheet (extension.iastate.edu/4h/
page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders) or
give us a call at 712-236-4697.
Remember, to be a member in good standing, you
must be re-enrolled in 4hOnline by January 1st. You
also must go to at least four club meetings to be
able to show at ANY fair. So get enrolled right away
and attend those meetings!!!
If you have a sibling that is now able to join 4-H,
simply log on to 4hOnline like usual and just click
“Add a new Family Member”. If they were in Clover
Kids and already have a profile, simply reenroll
them but make sure they have a 4-H club selected
instead of Clover Kids under the participation tab.
Note: You will not be able to receive reminder
emails from Aubrey until you re-enroll!

Beef weigh in will take place on December 28th
at Denison Livestock. 501 N 9th Street in Denison
from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM. If you are planning to
exhibit a market beef animal, you MUST have it
weighed in on this date. If you absolutely can not

county’s weigh in date is later than others and
there may not be any other options if you do not
plan ahead of time.
Once you weigh in your cattle, you MUST verify
your weights and ID’s on 4hOnline by February
1st. If there is a mistake, we must know before-
hand. We can no longer make changes in
4hOnline after February 1st.
If Denison Livestock would happen to have a sale on the 28th weigh in will move to the 29th.
Pop Tabs For Jacy
The 2019-20 State 4-H Council wants to carry on
Jacy McAlexander's legacy by continuing to col-
lect pop tabs from around the state in his honor
for the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines!
Jacy was a leader of service and helping others
during his 17 years of life!
The State Council’s goal for Iowa 4-H this year is
to collect 1,500 lbs. by the 2020 Iowa 4-H Youth
Conference on June 30-July 2.
Take your collected pop tabs to the Crawford County Extension Office.
Winter Break Workshop:
Bored over winter break?
Need a new warm pair of pajama pants?
If you answered yes to either of those questions then
you should come to the Crawford County Extension
office on Monday, December 30th from 1-5 for a sewing
workshop. The project for this workshop will be pajama
pants.
We will start the workshop by going to Wise Monkey
Quilting in Denison where youth get to pick out their
own fabric. After wards we will come back to the exten-
sion office and put together their pajama pants.
This workshop is also a chance for Crawford County 4-
Hers to meet a group of girl scouts. Girl Scouts from
Manning will be joining us for this fun filled day!
Registration for this workshop will cost $10 for 4-Hers
and $15 non 4-Hers. Registration cost will cover buying
the fabric and materials needed to sew. To register call
the Crawford County Extension Office at 712-263-4697
or e-mail [email protected]. Registration deadline is
December 1st.
Awards Banquet:
Crawford County will be going back to a county wide
awards ceremony . The awards ceremony will take place
on January 26, starting at 1:00 PM in the Crawford
County Extension Office basement. Following the
awards ceremony there will be an ice cream social.
Smithfield Production Class
It is my pleasure to announce we have an opportunity to add a new class to the swine division.
We are reaching out to find out how much interest we would have in a class that is more geared to-
wards record keeping and the actual raising of the hog.
Smithfield hog production has stepped up to help fund this class as they will provide each ex-
hibitor that is interested with four hogs around seventy-five pounds. Pigs will be available around
March or April at fifty dollars apiece from their source of pigs. This would be an opportunity to have
everyone start out on an equal playing field with a one source of good healthy pigs.
The structure of the program would be centered around more of the day to day activities with
the kids getting to bring the pigs to the fair. These pigs would show in a separate class of just these
hogs and be judged on the uniformity of the group as well as the records that are kept.
The day to day activities would be the daily care of the hogs and record keeping. Each exhibitor
would need to keep track of the feed, medications, daily observations of the pigs and visitors to the
farm. Each exhibitor would also need to conduct a line of separation within the guidelines of the se-
cure pork act and pass a mock site assessment and common swine audit performed by a certified PQA
plus advisor.
We’re sure you have lots of questions and we look to have all the questions answered in a
meeting held in January/February, but for now we are just looking to have everyone that would be in-
terested in doing this sign up by December 1st so we can let the folks at Smithfield know what we are
thinking as far as numbers.
We look forward to hearing from you on this new and exciting opportunity for the youth of
Crawford County.
Sincerely,
Aubrey Houska
County Youth Coordinator
