Personal Statement

From an early age, I have been intrigued by the

processes and capabilities of the mind. I could not

fathom how and why one acted out of anger, violence, pain, or joy. Once I reached my teenage

years, I became even more enveloped in the study of the brain’s processes, confused by the emotions and amorous feelings that came after hitting puberty and handling the trials of high school. I thus developed an eating disorder as a means of control in a world of chaos. Once discovered, my parents sent me to a psychologist in order to ascertain the true causes of my emotional disorder. After much resentment and close-mindedness, I grew to appreciate the help of the psychologist in allowing me to step outside of my troubled state to see what was truly the issue in my mind. Though the disorder brought me to an incredible and emotional low, my recovery reignited the intense interest in the mind. I made it my personal goal to study and understand the field of psychology in order to help others in the face of their personal dilemmas.

After completing my B.A. degree for Psychology, my initial goal is to attend a graduate program for which I can obtain my master’s degree, followed by a doctorate degree, concentrating on Industrial/Organizational Psychology. While I possess a keen interest in psychology, business has also become my passion. Industrial/Organizational Psychology offers the practical use of psychology knowledge but also integrates business, for which I feel I would excel. As an A student, I have continually shown my commitment to not only the field of psychology and my schooling, but also proven my overall dedication and exemplary use of time management. I have learned to juggle marriage, work, school, volunteer work, and physical activities such as tennis and regular exercise, earning above average sales goals in my current position and raising my GPA to a 3.95. Though my weakness is perfectionism, I have managed to counteract my notion to over-think by accessing positive energy and utilizing time management. These are two, among many, contributions to my life that the study of psychology has provided for me.

Though I do not have research experience, I work on average 35 hours per week in order to maintain our standard of living. My current position as a saleswoman utilizes psychology in several ways, for instance, accessing the part of the customer’s psyche in which to plant the seed of desire and need for our products. I also study the customer’s body language and nonverbal communication as a means of directing communication. While I am not working, I also volunteer for community projects around the San Diego, California area, such as helping to restore the beauty and cleanliness of local beaches. This brings me great joy and reward, for I feel as if I am giving back for the blessings that I have been granted. In this same way, the field of psychology brings me great joy and reward, for in understanding the mind’s processes, I can thus help others in their ultimate quest of finding peace, happiness, and satisfaction.

Reflection

While attending Argosy University from 2009-2010, I have gained a great deal of confidence in my knowledge of psychology. I have learned the core values of management, honed my problem-solving skills, and created a network of fellow students and professors to help expand my knowledge of the field. Argosy has taught me the value of time management, as well as a variety of technological skills, such as how to create a LinkedIn profile and ePortfolio. While I have only spent a year at this university, I have attained a better understanding of where I would like to concentrate in psychology and the areas in which I need more focus. The professors at Argosy University have taught me about the power of words and human emotion as they integrate with every day life, including my future profession in psychology. With the knowledge I have gained from Argosy, I can look to my future in the field of psychology with optimism and enthusiasm.

According to the Student Self-Appraisal of Learning (SSAL), my learning outcomes have proven that I am ready to move forth in the field of psychology, though there are also areas of weakness in which I need to focus. For example, the SSAL indicates that my cognitive abilities of critical thinking, information literacy, understanding research methods, oral and written communication skills, ethics and diversity, knowledge of psychology, and interpersonal effectiveness scores range between Significant Exposure and Extensive Exposure. This, in short, means that I possess a strong understanding of psychological methods, theories, and procedures in order to put them into practice in the field. This extensive knowledge and ability to use psychological knowledge would not be possible without the work I have done with Argosy University.
