Personal Statement

I have chosen to complete my undergraduate studies in the field of Psychology. This decision did not come easily for me, as

I originally changed my major so many times that my mother and school counselor became very frustrated with me. Finally,

I was forced to take the decision seriously. I thought about my life and the lessons I had learned up to that point. I thought

about my parent’s divorce, and how I was affected by their separation. I also thought about the culture shock I experienced

due to the move from a small town Mississippi to Atlanta. The feelings I still harbored toward my biological father for his

inability to parent and be present, combined with very intense emotions led me to the point of realization that Psychology

was my field of interest.

I am currently on track to graduate from Argosy University in July of 2013. Upon graduation, I intend to seek

employment as a middle school guidance counselor. I have chosen this career path because I want to be the voice of reason

in a child’s life, or at least help them understand things that may be going on in their lives. During my parents divorce, I

remember feeling very alone. I wished there was someone present in my life to explain some of the emotions I was

experiencing. In addition, this happened to me at an age where peer pressure was very prevalent. Sometimes young children

need someone in their lives that is not afraid to admit that they have had similar experiences, and possibly share with them

how they dealt with these experiences.

Reflection

Since my college career began at Argosy University, I have completed lecture reading for each class, as

well as actively participating in class discussions. The information that I have retained has defiantly

benefited me in my day-to-day job duties. Not only has my knowledge base expanded, along with my

communication skills. I am able explain various diagnoses such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar

disorder; as well as symptoms, and treatments for the diagnosis. I am also able to participate in

conversations regarding past research studies, such as the Milgram’s Experiment. Which happens to be

one of my favorite research experiments, the other is the Stanford Prison Experiment.

My Future in Learning

My decision to return to school and complete my degree will be rewarding beyond measure.

Upon completion of my degree and obtaining gainful employment in my field of study, I

plan to give back to my community and help those children that may not know how to reach

out for help. I want to become the greatest role model for my child. I understand now that

the decision I make will ultimately have an effect on her and the decisions she makes in her

life, as she gets older. Life is full of learning experiences, failures and successes. We should

all make sure we take those experiences, learn and grow from them.
