Seven On The Line

Hello again all,

So here was the plan. I would work all week on pulling AU together. Then my trusty partner would finish it all up over the weekend, while Itrooped off down to Southern Canberra to play in April Fools. Ofcourse, things soon went awry when Nadine asked for this trustyside-kick’s phone number, and soon she was down playing for thedelightfully named Sugarboutsultries. So here I find myself at mid-night on Monday night writing an editorial so that this issue can getoff to the printers tomorrow, so it can come back by Easter, so wecan mail it too you all before Nationals. *Yawn*! So if I drift off overthe rest of the page, you know its the lack of sleep. And did Imention the Finance exam I had on earlier this evening?

But when I think about it, its not just me that’s getting terribly busy -Australian Ultimate is too, as the training and tournament seasonhits high gear in preparation for Nationals, Leagues change fromSummer to Autumn, and the manic preparation for the WorldChampionships continues apace.

At least this means that each issue of this magazine is gettingeasier and easier to pull together. More and more people are sendingin material, and its getting to the point now that we have to madlytrim every second thing to try to get it all to fit in (and some stuff wehave to apologise and post on www.afda.com instead - check it out!)In particular, our band of willing photographers seems to double witheach issue. So cheers to all those folks. We’re going to have todouble the number of pages sooner or later.

So before I conclude, let me wish the very best of luck to everyoneplaying at Nationals this year, and to the organisers as well - mayeverything go smoothly and all the work pay off! May you all com-pete with the best of Spirit.

And if I may borrow from the South Australian’s . . .YEAH ULTIMATE!!!!

jdrgoing to bed now.

Zoltan Crowned WA ChampionsOn Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th

of January, Perth witnessed the 6th

Phoenix Has Risen tournament, held each year as to determine theWA State Champions.

After a tough first day, AAFA, AnImperial Set of Spanners, andZoltan (with 10 UWA students)appeared to be the teams to beat.A huge BBQ Saturday night BBQand a visit to the Floreat Hotel

however soon sorted out the gamefrom the lame.

By the end of the preliminaries,Zoltan qualified for the final on goaldifference and because AAFA andSpanners had equal goal differ-ences too, the head-to-head resultput the Spanners through.

The final was a tough game, however many non-players gotstuck into Stubby Guts in thetraditional manner. The gamewent point-for-point until Zoltanedged ahead to take the first half. The intensity lifted in the secondhalf with some awesome layoutD’s and hand-blocks so a lot ofbeer was owed by the end. As itwas, Zoltan took the game 17-9.

‘Bouncing’ Bec Rutter (AAFA) and‘Pouncing’ Paul Staples (MUD)were named MVPs and SWATtook the much coveted Spirit Prize.Nice work guys. Insult of thetourney goes to ‘Ravishing’ Roydfor his “You’re a Gaylord!” line.Nice work everyone.

Sober up now!

Awarding Australia this bidrecognizes their efforts and supportof WFDF and encourages the restof the world to come to them.Having more Australian players andteams participate and to be involvedwith planning the event will be aboon for the continued developmentof Ultimate in Australia as well is inthe surrounding region. Nationals 2004 Tipswith Your Celebrity Tippers

Confused about who’s going to win Nationals 2004? Weasked some of Australia’s top Ulti-celebs for their (tongue-in-cheek [we think]) tips.

OPEN DIVISION“Twenty teams from every state and one territory will be inthe Open Division. Who’s in your top three?”

Pennoes – AU regular and Newcastle-booster.First – Fakulti. “These guys are hot, and a well tunedmachine of youth. They will be hungry for victory after theirloss last year to Eastern Territories and they will not bedenied this year.”Second – Chilly. “I think that once again Vic will make itclose to winning, but alas I don’t feel it is their year just yet.”Third - Eastern Territories. “The NZer’s will be very keen todefend their title, but this year the might of the strong Aussieteams will be too much for them.”Hot Tip: “Look for the SAvage guys to be making animpact. Ultimate is booming in SA and they are a breedingpot of new Ultimate talent. And Manly may spring somesurprises.”

Giles Deshon - Resident Canadian and full time VC Ulti-mate employee.First – Chilly. “Really, it’s about time, isn’t it? Are theywearing V-neck shirts this year?”Second - Queensland. “They will actually win, but I can’tgive them the kiss of death by putting them at no.1. Watchout for Buzz to Mike Neild. How’s the head, Mike?”Third – Southside. “These guys seem to be the real deal. How can I conclude that from halfway around the world? They keep getting seeded high than Fakulti!”

Chris Warris – Star of the LotR Trilogy.First - ACTion Men. “Cause it’s my team. Provided wecan adapt to the heat (we’ve heard it sometimes gets over20 degrees C in April up there!), our new structured gameplan will trouble all teams at the tournament, includingourselves.”Second – Fakulti. “Early Season form suggests they willbe hard to beat, if only those hot-head Shepherds andDowles can keep their fierce tempers under control. Andwatch out for Kwong’s hairy bum, we’ve heard he gets itfrom his Mum.”Third – Queensland. “Home town advantage always helps, with all the established Queensland stars teaming up withthe new bright young things.”Hot Tip - “Ian Warren from ACT to win the Doolio.”Surprise Packets – SAvage and inSAne. “Look for theseguys to cause some upsets. Some excellent grass rootsrecruitment over the past couple of years has seen thedevelopment of SA’s first league, and 2 teams sent to MixedNats. It’s only a matter of time before SA establishes itselfas a force in Australian ultimate - but will it be this year or a

little further down the track?”

Jemery Day - Tassie Two-Hat TD, and one time Nationalsplayer.First – Chilly. “Every time Nationals has been held inQueensland in the last 12 years, Victoria have made thefinals. They’ve threatened to win so often in recent years thatnobody believes they ever will - I reckon this is the yearthey’ll do it.”Second – Fakulti. “OK so they’ve got their pencil’s sharp-ened, and Owen’s out of his school uniform now - but they’renot quite going to make it as the best Aussie team thistime.”Third - Queensland. “Pottsy’s going to want to finish higherthan 6th this year. Changing teams is a great way to do it -but he should have gone back to the Buggers (who’ll beatSouthside in a forfeited game in the playoff for 3rd place!!)”Hot Tip – SAvage. “Will have the biggest improvement onlast year’s placing - I reckon they’ll make top 12 - but it willhave nothing to do with the two-tier system!”

Jay Dowling - South Australian / Adelaide University icon.First - SAvage. “First time SA has had an all-round training(ie tactics, throwing, catching and drinking) and selection fora Nationals team, so we expect to reap the benefits immedi-ately.”

with “Celeb” TippersSecond – Chilly. “Will beat the Sydneyteams then become so stunned theyforget to win the final.”Third - Queensland. “Any team whichstarted training last year deserves amedal.”Surprise Packet – Wollongong. “Onthe AFDA registration page, Andrew Craigis their only player. Mixed Nats 2004 RumoursRumours continue to abound on thelocation of Mixed Nationals 2004.Due to be played in only six months, consortiums from both Adelaide andNewcastle are considering bids.

Unnamed sources denied made-upreports that Adelaide’s bid washampered by the immense continu-

well-thanked League Organiser‘Awesome’Andrew Ley, took outthe Spirit Sambucca, closelyfollowed by Nads Uncut andRocket Science. And let’s mentionthe Trees because they have a coolname. “Branches up!” indeed.

The day before, Hot White Loveavenged their loss to Plastic Reignin the previous season’s Competi-tive League Final by beating themthe second time round to pick upthe greatest prize in ACT Ultimate, the Leon Smith ChampagneBucket.

The Reign came out hard and were3-0 up before the Love remem-bered the play that took them

through the earlier rounds unde-feated. ‘Dancing’ Dan Wilkinspicked up the Mars Bar Award forplay of the Final, with a specialmention to ‘Departing’ DamoHalliday, who wondered whynobody in his team were runninginto the empty end-zone, beforerealising he was facing the wrong

ing and exponential growth of thegame in South Australia. “If Adelaidegets to run it, there’ll be about 15 SAteams in it, so they’ll only be able tolet one team from each other state,”nobody said. “We are thinking ofhaving a three tier system – one forSA, a second for people we like, anda Division Three for anyone who’swon a National title before.”

Meanwhile, the Newcastle adminis-trator hasn’t said anything about theirreckoning that Mixed Nats could berun in “me Mum’s backyard”. Noth-ing was said along the lines of“She’s a lovely lady, and would makesome scrummy lamingtons for luncheach day.”

Every four years the best Austra-lian players get to empty theirbank accounts, fly across theglobe and pit themselves againstthe best players in the world. And it’s happening again thisyear, that’s right the WorldUltimate Championships, sched-uled in 2004 for Turku, Finland.

World Ultimate (& Guts) Cham-pionships bring together thenational teams from ultimateplaying nations around the worldto compete for 8 days for thechance to claim the title of WorldChamps. There are severaldivisions which teams can enterin: Open, Womens, Co-ed,Open Masters, Junior Boys &Junior Girls. Additionally if any-one in Australia actually playedGuts (and we’re not talking buttguts here) we could enter a Gutsteam. (Ok, so if you don’t knowwhat guts is we’re talking stand-ing a few metres apart andhurling discs as hard as you canat your opposite number, hopingthey can’t catch)

Like other Australian Represen-tative teams the national ultimate

teams have names relating toAustralian animals. The Openteam is known as The Dingos, andthe Women’s Team is The ThornyDevils. Australia has not enteredteams in the other divisions beforeso as yet don’t have names, though I believe “Barramundis” ishighly likely to be the name of theMixed team.

The last World Championshipswere in Heilbronn, Germany.Australia placed 6th in both theOpen & Women’s divisions. TheThorny Devils won Spirit Award fortheir division which was an excel-lent result. This time round bothteams are aiming much higher, theeventual goal being to win the

Championships.

Preliminary team selec-tions for the Open &Women’s teams weremade in January [seethe list in News – Eds],with the final teams forOpen, Women’s & Mixedexpected to be an-nounced at the Austra-lian National Champion-ships in Brisbane at theend of April.

The Australian build-upfor this year’s Champi-

onships has been its longest ever. The first applications for playerswanting to try out for the teamswere called for in June 2003 – 14months before the actual event.Since then there have been 4training camps, each one involvingup to 150 hopefuls. The playershave been following a rigoroussprint training regime as well asattending seminars on psychol-ogy, nutrition & how to travel with ateam.

Next edition we’ll talk more aboutthe actual teams and individualsinvolved. Stay tuned fans ofAustralian Ultimate!

Beach Ultimate Aftermath - A Tale From the E-mail ListsFrom: “John Salerno”Sent: Monday, 22 March 2004 1:52 PMSubject: The power of the “Colt”

Guys Here is a ripper of a story.

I was out playing Frisbee on the beach on Sunday. Part way through thegame I noticed that my wedding ring had gone missing. We immediately stopped playing and scoured the surface visually. Butalas nothing sinks like a gold ring in the sand. When there was no success I took some marker points (marking a spaceabout two tennis courts size) and decided to go back the next day tosearch for it.This morning I hired a metal detector from a place on grange road called“Miner’s Den”. For $20 (+$100 deposit) they handed over a “MusketeerColt”When we got to the beach an old man came to assist and took over thejob of using the detector (first thing he suggested was that we change thebatteries).

After an hour of searching we had found:2x hair pins 1x light bulb2x candle bases 3x juice lids5x beer caps 5x .22 caliber shells

...and yes 1 Gold Wedding Ring belonging to yours truly!!

Thanks to old man and local company “MINELAB” who makes thedetector.

My marriage is saved again :-)

Whether you’re representingAustralia at Worlds, or justchucking around in front peopleyou want to impress at thebeach, we all know deep downthat regular practice will im-prove your throwing. Veteranplayer Charles Bulmer offershis tips.

The aim of practising throwingis to be able to throw to the bestof your ability in a game situa-tion.

This may seem obvious, but alot of people practise in a waythat is so different to a gamesituation that it does not helpmuch in a game. When prac-tising, you should simulate agame situation as much aspossible.

A game involves:· having to throw around a

marker· having 10 seconds to choose

a good option and throw· pressure· mental fatigue· physical fatigue and· throwing to a moving target.

Throwing without concentration, without pivoting, without pres-sure, and allowing yourself tomake mistakes as you get tired

Five Thoughts to Take into a Throwing Session1. A short session where each throw involves full concentration is many times more useful than a long one without

much mental effort. Be aware this will require a particular effort if the person you are throwing with does not shareyour aims and is not as serious about the session.

2. Put in a pivot or fake with every throw. A game involves almost every throw having a pivot or fake, and the ability togain your balance quickly is crucial. But practise holding back the throw if you are not feeling balanced at the pointwhen you want to throw, and then pivot or fake again.

3. Visualize exactly the tilt angle and speed and direction of each throw before you throw. Aim for each session to bean improvement in the percentage of throws that fly exactly as intended.

4. Spend at least some of each session throwing to a moving target. You may need to practise your charm andpersuasiveness in order to get the other person to move…

5. Notice when you start to feel tired mentally and physically. Make a conscious effort to concentrate and keepthrowing well (and catching 100%). Do this for a short time but stop before your throws deteriorate. eIther wait torecharge or end your session there. Don’t practise lazy throwing; the whole aim of practising effectively is topractise at the level you want to play.

will help you get better at throwingin this sort of situation, but it won’thelp you much in a game. You may become a great throwerin the park, but you will not improvemuch in a real game. This isbecause of pressure, pressure,PRESSURE!

There is only one important thingabout pressure…if you find outhow to deal with pressure you willget the best out of yourselfAnd there is only one way for eachperson to know how they them-selves deal with pressure in theirown particular way…experience.Learn from your failures.

They will happen. Look back afterbad games, figure out when andwhy the pressure got to you, andthink about how you want toperform in that situation. Maybeask others or search elsewhere foradvice. But the learning is donewhen you are aware the next timeyou are in that situation, andimprove at least slightly on theprevious time.

Practising this is difficult except ina game itself, but once you have afeeling for how pressure affectsyou and how you overcome it, useyour imagination to recreate apressure situation, and visualizeyourself succeeding in that situa-tion. You can do this during athrowing session, or as a totallyseparate activity. One famousstudy found that participants whophysically practised basketball freethrows were less successful in theactual test than those who hadpractised by just visualising suc-cessful throws.

FantasyLongsThe Adventure Continues - Some of you will remember last issue we started to build the greatest(fictional pop culture) Ultimate Frisbee team EVER! We introduced you to the team’s three handlers –Captain America, Tron, and Odd Job. This issue dear readers, we invite you to continue imagining thepower, the style and the spirit of the League of Extraordinary Ultimate Players, while we introduce you tothe teams three key longs: Sister Betrille – the Flying Nun, Barry Allen – the Flash, and Inspector Gadget!

Long 1 – The Flying NunWhile Sister Bertrille’s hey-dayswere broadcast during the1970’s television show ‘theFlying Nun’ (where she looked alot like Sally Field) she’s acracking Long. And its not justbecause she’s a bright, exuber-ant young novice who lightensthe lives of all at the ancientConvent San Tanco, situated ona hilltop near San Juan, PuertoRico.

On the Ultimate field, not theleast of Sister Bertrille’s skills isthat she can actually fly. How?Well, “when lift plus thrust isgreater than load plus drag,”any object can fly, includingSister Bertrille, who weighs only90 pounds. Whenever a stiffwind catches the starchedcornette worn by her order, offshe goes. Perfect for snagginglong floaters well above thedefending pack. The Flying Nununfortunately has a great deal oftroubles with upwind points, limiting her effectiveness.

Long 2 – The FlashAfter a lab accident where he wasdoused in chemicals and struck bylightning (tough day in the office,eh? – eds), police scientist BarryAllen discovers he is now thefastest man alive, capable ofmoving at near light speed. Adopt-ing the code-name ‘The Flash’, thescarlet speedster battles a rangeof bizarre criminals while protect-ing his home town of Central City(as you do).

With his incredible speed, theFlash can pick up any groundseeking swill you happen to throw, defend any point on a Frisbee field(actually, several dozen Frisbeefields, which makes him central toplanning for WUCC2006) and slicethe oranges for half-time, all atonce.

Unfortunately, every time the Flashcracks the sound barrier theassociated sonic boom andatmospheric disturbances tend toseriously disrupt the flight of adisc. Of course, if you lose thegame, the Flash can run so fast asto open a chronal warp and turnthe Earth backwards intime, meaning youget a chanceto play thematchagain!

Long 3 – Inspector GadgetWhile not the brightest ofsparks if his televised adven-tures are taken into account,Inspector Gadget is an inspira-tion to any Ultimate Frisbeeteam. Every team needs itsguy who will go to the line anddo his best in any circum-stances. And telescopic armsand legs, plus a helicopter thatcomes out of his hat, meansthat even Tom Walcott andSylvan Brown standing on eachother’s shoulders would havetrouble skying him when thedisc comes near.

And should any crimes needsolving, fear not, Gadget ishere.Gadget even brings his ownsupport crew – his niece Pennyand her dog Brain - who can berelied on to gather intelligencefrom other teams throughout atournament.

Go go Gadget!

Junior @ WorldsWorlds Juniors UpdateWith ‘Brilliant’ Bruce McNaughton

Don’t ask how we got there, but it’sreally happening! We have bothOpen and Women’s Junior teamsregistered and selected, and we’redamn-well going!

The Boys are:ACT: Thomas Walcott and RobinStevenson.NSW: Geoffrey Schneider, LiamKendrick, Nick Hansen, JamesArnesen, Brad Ryan, CameronHilaire, Jason McLaren, GavinBagnell, Julian Nickiel and LukeTurner.QLD: John McNaughton, LukeGeorge and Adrian Gepp.VIC: Dion Cartledge and DanielRule.

And the Girls are:NSW: Emily Satchwell, KatherineGraham, Julia Birchall, ElizabethDodd and Juliana Harris, ChristineBalmer, Tara Carraro, Sam Millerand Heather Smith.VIC: Arwyn Cartledge, Greta Huntand Jen Payne.

Key to the selection process wasthe skills development and selec-tion camp held in January. Imaginespending a concerted full weeklearning the ways of ultimate in the

early stages of your ultimatecareer, being coached by worldsand other experienced playersdedicated to your development ona ratio of 4:1. A WHOLE WEEK -capped off with playing at Seeds ofDoom as a team!! The result is agroup of youth filled with the joy ofultimate, and mad keen to repre-sent their country in Finland.

Needless to say this sort of oppor-tunity doesn’t come along everyday, and was only possible througha HUGE effort by all the volunteersand selectors to commit their timeand money to these kids. Hugethanks go to Pottsy, Nikki Shires, and Johnno Greenfield as selec-tors and Bruce McNaughton asmanager for organising, selectingand putting the whole week in; MattDowle, Kenny & Warwick, Glen,Seppo, Christie, Lisi, Jackson; andof course all of those who openedtheir doors as billets for the wholeweek. The selectors’ work contin-ued to include player profiles withstrengths and weaknesses for thekids to work on.

But wait…. there’s more!! Onetraining camp does not a World’steam make.

The selectees were given instruc-tions to take their training to heart, and get connected to leagues andtournaments where possible, andthe ultimate community wastasked with both continuing theirskills development, and to supporttheir fundraising activities. Andstuff has been happening atCreswick and Maryborough inVictoria (where the kids havebecome local media stars),Sydney NSW (where theTurramurra boys’ parents havetotally supported their boys withattendance at the camp, Seedsand tourneys), Gosford NSW(which has been biggest challenge

Australian Junior Tom Walcott at an un-disclosed location with the Oldies

because of the lack of a leagueand proximity to tourneys, andVirginia Brunton - Sam Miller’smum - has offered to manage thewomen’s team, and also is fired upto obtain support and see the girlsdevelop), Gosford NSW, GoldCoast Queensland (where Adrianand his Bond Uni group did aHUGE one on Sunday 21 March byorganising the Disc Del Mar beachtourney AND delivered a contribu-tion of $900 to the juniors cam-paign!), Brisbane, Qld (where bothAdrian and John scored a place onthe Buggers team - Qld firsts), andYeppoon, Qld (where Luke isanother lad who is playing with hisdad and getting support at a youngage).

What’s left to say? The race is notyet run. Funding challenges re-main, and a number of players arestruggling to meet their commit-ments. Player situations - includingfamily - can change without notice, and the position with a minimumnumber of girls on the women’steam leaves us exposed.

Achieving this milestone in Ulti-mate in Oz is an opportunity forfurther youth development andengagement of schools andparents, who are the mainstays ofother conventional sports. It’simportant that Ultimate takes timeout to make parents welcome andactively encourages them tosupport their kids when they domake an effort to attend.

Lastly, a special thankyou to NikkiShires who has done so much tobring the schools under the um-brella of ultimate sport, and contin-ues to take direct involvement inthe selected girls’ engagement intourneys and leagues. Nikki’steaching material is excellent andis great support to schools thatwant to try ulti.
