ABSTRACT

This research work was undertaken to investigate the attitude

of students towards teaching as a profession. A case study of

college of education Ekiadolor-Benin. The study embrace the

student of college of education Ekiadolor Benin were used for

the data analysis. Results of the study indicate that teachers

are not well financially remunerated and they are look down

upon because of delay in payment of salaries and allowances.

Findings have reviewed that poor conditions of services of

teachers negative personal and professional behaviour are

critical factors responsible for teachers low status. Some

recommendations to enhance the teaching profession were

made.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The chapter examines the attitude of student towards

teaching as a profession. In setting the full knowledge of the

study we have to know the concept of each terms. According

to Afe (1998) sees teaching as that activity that consist of a

body action intended to undue warning through the conscious

and deliberate efforts by a matured or experience person to

impart knowledge, information to an immature or experience

person teaching, therefore is a process which involves the

teachers the students and learning environment teaching is

one occupation which parades the highest number of quacks

despite its position as the engine room for the development of

the human intellect and the world.

Oxford advanced learner’s dictionary (2006) state that

profession is a type of job that needs special training

especially one that needs a high level of education. Teaching

profession is a type of job that demand high qualification,

based on the fact that the average Nigeria teachers spend

three years in college of education or four to five years in

university due to the fact that teachers are nation builders,

they are the light of the nation.

Over the year teaching profession in Nigeria lacked

respect and dignity especially when compared with what is

obtains in some other country of the world.

Ajayi (1982) state that, the teaching profession has a very

low status and it is looked down upon by the society it strives

to build.

The teachers unlike any professional group influence the

lives of the youth and the future of the nation in a large

measured despite the fact that students relegate teaching to

the least in their job performance. This is primarily because of

the inferior label that is attached to the teaching profession.

However it has been discovered that the number of student

admitted into college of education Ekiadolor Benin that have

interest in reading education is not much, but they accept the

offer with the attitude of self pity arising from their choice of

the teaching profession as a last resort.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Education is the light of the nation and the teachers are the

tough bearers it was noted from the foregone statement that

students studying education do not want to remain in the

profession.

Teachers are faced with some problems which are

i. irregular payment of salaries

ii. the low moral of the profession

iii. no promotion prospect

iv. lack of personal qualification

v. poor teachers public image and lack of job satisfaction

The profession that is faced with large number of

unwilling student is the teaching profession.

The purpose of this study is to determine the actual factors

that influence students in college of education Ekiadolor

attitude toward teaching profession.

Specially, the purpose of the study should be found out the

following.

1. Factors influencing students attitude toward teaching

profession

2. Compared the attitude of students who are reading

education as a result of circumstance

3. Those reading education as a result of interest and

motivation.

4. Those reading education as a result of influence from

friends, peer group society and parents

5. The reason why some student come to college of

education and later change school.

This will enable the assumption that people hold about the

teaching profession.

The study will be contributing to educational knowledge

regarding the various factors affecting students of education

view towards teaching profession

To make students aware that teaching profession is not

for those that are academically wear, but for the intellectuals

in the society.

The knowledge of those factors will be helpful to

counselors, parents and those who come to remedy of the

problem facing teaching in the society.

The information provided in this study will be helpful to

state ministry of education embracing on free education and

federal government plans for it qualitative free and functional

educational programme.

This study help to encourage students to choose career in

teaching profession having known that teaching is a noble

profession as it was stated in the national policy of education

(1981) that teacher like other profession will be legally and

publicly recognize as a profession.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions were carried out in this

study.

1. Do you view teaching as a profession?

2. Do you view teaching as a stepping stone to other

profession?

3. Are you reading education because your parents

are teachers?

4. Do you go into teaching profession because your

friends are teaching?

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study covers only students of college of

education Ekiadolor-Benin from were data was collected.

LIMITATION OF STUDY

Many constraints pose limitation of this study firstly, there

was some errors which I was told to over again.

Secondly limited fund and time.

Attitude: Predisposition to perceive behaviour towards specific

object or certain people in a particular manner.

Profession: This is an occupation with high status made up of

highly trained exerts performing highly specialized role in the

society which some others do or can not perform.

Motivation: Motivation means that willingness to do something

without needing to be forced to do it.

Interest: curiosity to know or learn more about something.
