SUMMARY. Subject of this paper is the publicaon of an East Greek fruitstand found at the sele-
ment located on the low mound of Karabournaki, in the area of Thermaic gulf at Thessaloniki. The
site is recognized as a part (kome) of the ancient Thermi, and in parcular as its harbor. The lat-
ter, located by the selement, was the only harbor at the center of the Thermaic gulf and it was
related with the trading acvies of the region. The presented vessel is preserved in a fragmentary condion and it is recognized as a product
of the Milesian workshop. It belongs to the tradionally called Middle Wild Goat II category or
according to the most recent system, to MileA Id, and it is dated at the end of the 7th c. BC. Al-
though the profile of the vase does not differ from the well-known standard types of the stemmed
dishes, the preserved part of the decoraon holds some interesng combinaon of mofs. In par-
cular, the volute paern found at the center of the fruitstand to surround the tondo, is not com-
mon at this secon of the vase. A 3D reconstrucon of the vessel has been done, in order to make
it widely accessible, and to facilitate its study.
The fragment was found within one of the semi-subterranean beehive shaped pits (yposkap-
ton) in the trench 27/89d, a common aribute of the site at Karabournaki. East Greek and Corin-
thian poery are the primary categories of imported ceramics found among the filling, along with
the Ac SOS type and Chian trade amphorae. The local poery was also disncve with the so-
called egg-shelled(ookelyphi) and silverish(asimizousa) to be characterisc. Most of the vesselsfound here appear to be related to symposion acvies, and they belong to the Archaic period.
The studied stemmed dish belongs to a group of vases made by the Milesian workshop that
have been imported to Karabournaki. They can also be related to the Milesian trade amphorae
found at the selement. It seems that all the products of Miletus (fine poery and trade amphorae)
were imported at the site during the 7th c. BC and the first part of the 6th c. BC. Consequently,
they can be part of the trading routes followed at that me.

A Boeoan Komast
Cup from Thermi near
Thessaloniki
SUMMARY. The Boeoan Komast cup presented here (Figs 1-3) is an old find, stored at the Archaeo-
logical Museum of Thessaloniki (inv. no. 3042). The vessels only record menons that it derives fromThermi, near Thessaloniki. The ancient name of the site located in the vicinity of the modern Thermi
sll eludes us, but it must have been prosperous and populous as the thousands of burials excavated
so far indicate. Since the cup survives intact (only one handle missing) it is believed to have comefrom the Thermi cemetery, probably found in the 1930s according to Museum archives.
It is one of the very few known Komast Cups manufactured in Boeoan poery workshops. The
komasts first appeared on Corinthian vessels of the Transional period although the shape of the Ko-
mast cup is an Ac creaon, which incorporated elements from similarly shaped Middle-Corinthian
cups. The combinaon of cups of this shape with the convenonalized depicon of two or three ko-
masts on each side is also an Ac creaon, associated with the painters who worked in the manner
of the KX Painter. The shape and proporons of the Thermi cup are very close to the Ac Komast
cups produced in the workshop of the Painter, but influenced from the slightly later cups of the
Painter and his circle. Its decoraon is clearly differenated from the Ac examples: Their main
differences are the rims decoraon with a series of small diagonal lines, the absence of the radialmof on the lower part of the body, the rough and stylized rendering of the palmees and lotus
flowers below the handles, while minimal incision is used on the two komasts and one of them hasthe characterisc boeoan kicking leg.
It is parcularly important that another Komast cup can be aributed to the same painter. It
appeared in the Art Market and has unknown provenance (Fig. 4). We are thus dealing with a new
Boeoan painter, who is here convenonally named Painter of Thermi 3042. The two cups of thePainter of Thermi 3042 join the other two known Boeoan Komast cups: One found at Chiusi in Etru-
ria and kept at the Muse de la Ville de Bucarest (inv. no. 18807), and another, of unknown prove-
nance, now in Munich (Ankensammlungen, inv. no. SH 426 [2267]). These four Boeoan Komast
cups appear to have been produced by at least two poers and painted by three different painters
in 570-550 BC. The fact that at least two of them have been found far away from Boeoa is very sig-
nificant, as research has noted the very scarce distribuon of Boeoan poery outside its region,
especially at such an early age. During the same period, cups, skyphoi and other vessels by the KX
Painter and the Komast Group reached all ports of the Mediterranean and are among the earliest
Ac vessels to be imported in Macedonia.
Apparently, the few Boeoan Komast cups were not produced to compete Ac exports across
the Mediterranean, but as a reply to the growing demand on similar vessels. It is not easy to detect
how they reached Etruria and the Thermaic Gulf. They may not have been commercial products
but transported by individuals, as it has already been proposed for other early black-figured Boeo-
an vessels found away from Boeoa. It should be noted though that individual Boeoan vessels
had probably reached the Thermaic Gulf (Sindos) already since the Early Iron Age. Nonetheless, our
knowledge of the distribuon of painted Archaic and Classical Boeoan poery in Macedonia is sll
limited.
