Vegetable oil has been known from antiquity.· No household can get onwithout it, for it is used in cooking. Perfumes may be made from the oils of certainflowers .Soaps are made from vegetable and animal oils.

To the ordinary man, one kind of oil may be as important as another. Butwhen the politician or the engineer refers to oil, he almost always means of mineraloil., the oil that drives tanks, aeroplanes and warships, motor-cars and diesellocomotives; the oil that is used to lubricate all kinds of machinery. When it isrefined into petrol it is used to drive the integral combustion engine. To it we owethe existence of the motor-car, which has replaced the privilege carriage drawn bythe horse. To it we owe the possibility of flying. It has changed the methods ofwarfare on land and sea. This kind of oil comes out of earth. Because it burns well,itis used as fuel. Because it burns brightly it is used for illumination. Because it isslippery, it is used for lubrication. Two metal surfaces rubbing together causefriction and heat. But if they are separated by a thin film of oil, the friction and heatare reduced. Nomachine would work for long if it were not properly lubricated.

Gandhiji was of a ripe age, but he was full of vitality and his capacity for work wasgreat. The end came suddenly by the hand of an assassin.
