WHY HAS THE ATOMIC BOMB NOT BEEN

USED SINCE JAPAN?

Background of the Bomb In 1939 President Roosevelt and congress authorized a

secret project to expand research on nuclear fission generate nuclear chain reactions to be used as atomic weapons.

With this new weapon in hand, Truman issued one final warning to Japan, which was ignored. On August 6, Hiroshima was destroyed, and three days later, Nagasaki was hit.

The United States remains the only nation to have ever used nuclear weapons, and has never again resorted to them, despite subsequent wars.

Why was it used back in 1945? The bomb’s effects were not known to

its full extent

The total expense required use of the bomb

Political reasons (shortening the war, saving lives, etc.)

After Japan, the bomb’s power became apparent.

Use of a nuclear weapon was justifiably seen as a horrible act.

We learned that… Nuclear weapons cause far too much

indiscriminate destruction and collateral damage.

Aftermath effects like fallout, radiation, etc. linger for years afterwards.

There is no defense against them.

Then why is everyone arming themselves with nuclear warheads,

but insist on not using them?

Despite these facts, they are still the #1 solution for worldwide threats.

They fulfill the role of a deterrent.

They are seen as the last resort DEFENSIVE weapons.

The use of the weapons simply escalates into more political controversy & bigger wars.

Destroying a whole region seems unnecessary & unefficient.

Because of these reasons, total disarmament of nuclear weapons have not been in question.
