1 About Use of ATM links and LAN

connections in RNC196

Use of ATM links and LAN connections in RNC196  provides lists of the

 ATM links provided by the ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU) and the ATM

links distributed via Multiplexer Units (MXU) in the RNC.

For upgrades from previously delivered RNCs (RNC196), two new

capacity steps are introduced: from 196 Mbit/s up to 300 Mbit/s (capacity

step 6) and from 196 Mbit/s up to 450 Mbit/s (capacity step 7). For more

information on the capacity steps, see Cabinet and subrack descriptions 

for RNC196  in Engineering Description.

Use of ATM links and LAN connections in RNC196  applies to capacity

steps 1 - 7. The tables in section Use of MXU ATM links  are divided as

follows:

. RNC196/196 (capacity steps 1 - 5)

. RNC196/300 (capacity step 6) and RNC196/450 (capacity step 7)

1.1 Introduction to ATM links

The ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU) provides part of the ATM cell

switching function. It provides 2N redundancy, full accessibility, and it is

non-blocking at ATM connection level (that is, if input and output capacities

are available, the connection can be established). The ATM Switching

Fabric supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connection

topologies, as well as differentiated handling of various ATM servicecategories. High capacity network interface units and ATM Multiplexer 

units are connected to the redundant SFU.

The ATM Multiplexer (MXU) multiplexes traffic coming from tributary units

towards the switching fabric. This enables the efficient use of switching

resources for low bit rate network interface units and computer units with

small to moderate bandwidth requirements. The ATM Multiplexer also

includes part of the ATM layer processing functionality, such as policing,

statistics, OAM, buffer management and scheduling.

The ATM Switching Fabric Unit (SFU / SF10) provides 16 pcs of duplicated

(622 Mbit/s) asyncronous transfer mode ports.

The ATM Multiplexer Unit (MXU / MX622-D) provides 19 pcs (0-155 Mbit/s)

asyncronous transfer mode ports.

1.2 Notations used in the lists of ATM links

The ATM links are shown in the form of tables, one type for SFU ATM links

and another for MXU ATM links.

SFU table

The table has two main columns, SFU and Functional unit (FU) using the

port, and a note column. The main columns are divided to subcolumns.

2 Use of SFU ATM links

The following table provides a list of all the SFU ATM links. The Switching

Fabric Unit (SF10) provides 16 ATM switch ports which are divided amongfunctional units as shown in the following table.

Note

In some cases, one subrack slot may house different plug-in units / 

functional units using the same SFU port. In the table below, the

alternative plug-in unit / functional unit equipping options are presented

in the same row according to the SFU port.

RNC can be configured to meet different capacity requirements. Thecapacity extensions are implemented through different capacity steps. The

SFU ATM links have been divided into two tables:

. SFU use for SFU 0 and SFU 1 in RNC196/196

. SFU use for SFU 0 and SFU 1 in RNC196/300 and RNC196/450

3 Use of MXU ATM links

The following tables provide a list of all the MXU ATM links. The

Multiplexer Unit (MXU) provides 19 ATM ports which are divided amongtributary functional units as shown in the following tables.

RNC can be configured to meet different capacity requirements. The

capacity extensions are implemented through different capacity steps. The

MXU ATM links have been divided into two sections:

. Use of MXU ATM links in RNC196/196  covers capacity steps 1 - 5

. Use of MXU ATM links in RNC196/300 and RNC196/450  covers

capacity steps 6 and 7. In capacity step 7, the units are of the newestvariant type.
