Preface Walleye (Sander vitreus, formerly Stizostedion vitreum) is the most highly sought game fish in Ontario. In 1987, a listing was assembled, which identified 4,038 lakes that supported resident walleye populations. This listing did not include river and stream populations of walleye however, so an exercise was initiated to compile a similar atlas of these lotic populations. Data from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) biologists and other personnel in each OMNR district in Ontario was compiled along with information from projects archived in FISHNET, FISHARC, provincial Aquatic Habitat Inventory Surveys (AHIS), the Corporate Water Body Table Database (CWTD), Natural Resource Values Information System (NRVIS), and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The data was then checked using the Gazetteer of Canada to verify latitude and longitude co-ordinates as well as township and county. Finally, OMNR watershed maps were used to determine the specific watershed code for each river or stream. During this exercise, communications with many OMNR personnel were necessary to verify the precision and accuracy of this data. This atlas represents a compilation of 860 rivers and streams which support self-sustaining populations of walleye. It does not include populations which are maintained by releases of cultured fish. Coordinates of waters in this document have been listed according to the location of their mouth. Due to the immense size of the province of Ontario, and the large numbers of unsurveyed waterbodies, this Atlas does not represent an exhaustive list of Ontario walleye rivers and streams. If you peruse this atlas and know of a walleye river or stream that is missing, please contact Fisheries Section, so that, in the future, this listing can be updated.

Welland River Welland Willoughby and Stamford and

Thorold

43°04' 79°03' 2HA-07 • Welland River historic data had Blue Walleye (1928 survey) but it may have been a blue coloured walleye. These fish were stocked in the 1950's by clubs and did very well. They were killed off due to a sewage spill in the 1960's. Restocking has recently begun again starting in 1997. Creel surveys are beginning to show a walleye harvest. Walleye are considered to be throughout the river system and not confined to Niagara Falls and Thorold. They occurr in West Lincoln, Wainfleet, Welland, Pelham and Glanbrook. Chippawa Creek is a local name for the Welland River. (A. Yagi pers. comm.)
