WELCOME TO ATLANTIS

SWIMMING CLUB

Atlantis Swimming Club is a competitive club, and swimmers are encouraged to enter swimming galas.

Meets are great fun, full of atmosphere, noise and team spirit.

They are an opportunity to experience competitions in a well organised, friendly, competitive environment. They give swimmers the chance to achieve official times which can lead to qualification to County, Regional and even National Championships.

For new swimmers and parents, they can also seem mystifying. This guide explains how meets work, how to choose which ones to enter and what to expect when you get there.

OPEN MEETS EXPLAINED

The meet season runs from September to July. Meets are licensed by Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). They are licensed at level 1, 2, 3 or 4. The minimum age for competing at a licensed meet is 9.

When starting out, look for level 3 or 4 meets. These are great for gaining experience and times. Level 1 and 2 meets tend to be for more experienced swimmers, or those swimming at a higher level.

To enter these meets, generally swimmers will need to achieve a qualifying time which must be submitted as part of the entry process. Some level 3 or 4 meets also have a fastest swimmer limit, preventing very fast swimmers from entering in order to provide opportunities for less experienced swimmers.

Atlantis run several meets each year, including the Summer Splash and the Christmas Cracker, open to swimmers from other clubs.

In addition, Atlantis holds internal Club Championships, which are just for Atlantis swimmers. These are licensed meets. It is imperative that all swimmers from all squads enter as many events at the Club Championships as possible. For some younger swimmers it may be the only opportunity to gain entry times for external meets. Swimmers of all ages can enter the Club Championships. They also provide coaches the information they need to advise swimmers on which meets they should be entering, and also helps with selection for upcoming team events.

COUNTIES, REGIONALS AND NATIONALS

The Sussex County Championships, South-East Regional Championships and National Championships are the big individual events across the year, and swimmers will aim to achieve qualifying times for these. Qualifying times must be achieved in a ASA licensed meet, including the Atlantis Club Championships.

County Championships run twice a year – the Winter competition and the Summer competition. Times are published at www.sussexswimming.org well in advance of the competition. Follow the links to the relevant competition to view the table of times.

Regional and National times are also published online. Your coach will speak to you if you for these times.

ASA LICENSING LEVELS

Level 1 Long-course (50m) pools only. Aim to enable swimmers to achieve National, Regional or County qualifying times.

Level 2 Short-course (25m) pools only. Aim to enable swimmers to achieve National, Regional or County qualifying times.

Level 3 Long and Short course pools. Aim to enable swimmers to achieve qualifying times for Regional and County Championships and other level 1 and 2 meets

.Level 4 Entry level events in 25m pools or longer. Aim to give inexperienced swimmers a chance to compete outside their club. If times are good, swimmers progress to level 3.

HOW TO ENTER A MEET. Once a meet is open to entries, an email will be sent to all swimmers advising that entry can be made via the Atlantis website. Entries can be made on the website, via MEETS, FUTURE MEETS and then click the meet to be entered.

Under each meet there is information regarding the level of the meet, type of meet SC (short course held in a 25m pool) or LC (long course held in a 50m pool), venue, fees, events including stroke and distance, session plans and qualifying times. Please be advised the minimum age for entering a licensed open meet is 9 years old.

To make an entry;

• Select the meet, fill the information in the boxes as you scroll down. If an ASA number is yet to be issued, please enter 6 x 9’s ONLY and if an event is being entered where a time is yet to be achieved – enter NT (no time) in the box next to that event.

• When the meet entries are being processed, times are always checked. If unsure of an achieved time, they can be checked on the ASA database, here’s how: website; http://www.swimmingresults.org from the rankings drop down menu select individual best times. Enter the swimmer’s ASA number or Family name. All ASA licensed results will be displayed.

• If an entry has been made but is to be amended for example, if an extra event is to be added, re-enter the swimmer’s details under the desired meet, there is then a question – “Is this an update?”,

Page 6: ATLANTIS SWIMMING CLUB HORSHAM€¦ · • Swimming kit! Trunks/Costume, goggles, Atlantis racing hat or swim hat. • Atlantis t-shirt (t-bag) • Atlantis tracksuit bottoms and

• click yes (only if you are adding to an existing entry), this will deduct the coach’s contribution that will have been paid under the original entry.

• If waiting on results of a meet before entering a further competition that is due to close, please do not wait. Times will automatically be updated once the result from that meet have been entered. The processing team will always try their best to enter the most recent achieved times before the entries are sent. However, once the entries are sent, times cannot be altered.

• Some meets operate on a first come first served basis, this will be mentioned in the meet notes relating to the specific meet and will close way in advance of the event in the hope that all of or entries are accepted.

• Entering the first few meets can be confusing, we are always here to help, please talk to the Coaches regarding how many events to enter and which distance and stroke to choose. Swimmers will soon say which stroke and distance they prefer, but it is always good to enter a range of events, but don’t enter too many events or commit yourselves to too much swimming across a single weekend.

• Qualifying times differ for SC and LC events, and times achieved in one format must be converted to count as an entry time for the other. To convert times from SC to LC or vice-versa go to the Atlantis website, click on LINKS, at the bottom of the page Time Conversions | pullbuoy. Click on this and a new window will open, scroll down and follow the instructions fill in conversion/event/gender and time then use ASA Tables for the conversion.

BEFORE THE DAY Once Atlantis has heard from the hosting club, all accepted entries will be displayed on the website. Before the meet date a list of REMINDERS will also be displayed. This is a list of the swimmers, events entered, entry time, session and warm up times.

Occasionally, meets have to make ‘scratches’ – meaning the meet is oversubscribed. In this case, should there be too many swimmers for an event, the hosting club will accept the fastest swimmers for that event per age group first and the remainder will be ‘scratched’ (not accepted to race). Should this happen, a refund is offered on that race. Sometimes, it is possible to have a swimmer reinstated should the hosting club receive withdrawals.

Volunteers:

For our meets we need a range of people to help out on the day in a variety of roles including; taking the entry money, selling raffle tickets, announcing, warm up marshal, computer systems, results runner, whipping, handing out medals, taking sweets and drinks poolside to officials/coaches/volunteer. Please contact [email protected] to be added to our volunteers list or for more information.

Officials:

If you hold an Official qualification J1, J2 or are a TK and would like to help at a gala you child is swimming at please advise the gala team at the time of making an entry. Many away meets are now requesting Atlantis provide a certain number of officials for our swimmers to be able to swim.

If you are interested in becoming an Official or finding out more than please contact [email protected].

We thank all our volunteers and officials for their continued help and support, we could not run events or attend as many without you.

WHAT TO BRING: • A small bag for poolside • Swimming kit! Trunks/Costume, goggles, Atlantis

racing hat or swim hat. • Atlantis t-shirt (t-bag) • Atlantis tracksuit bottoms and fleece or top • Spare swimming kit, goggles and hat • Clothes to change in to after competition including

underwear! • Two towels • Snacks/food and lots of water • Pound coin for lockers (large bags must be left in

lockers)

WHAT TO EAT: Although you may feel nervous on the morning of a gala, try to eat a nutritious breakfast. This will set you up for a day of competition. A good breakfast could be:

• Weetabix with fruit/honey and milk • Wholemeal toast with honey or peanut butter • Porridge

Drink plenty of water in the morning as this will help to hydrate your muscles ready for a days racing.

Try to eat little and often through the day. Pack plenty of healthy, nutritious food for the day, foods that will give you energy. Do not pack sweets, jelly cubes or foods high in saturated fats. It is not a good idea to eat lots of sugary food.

Page 12: ATLANTIS SWIMMING CLUB HORSHAM€¦ · • Swimming kit! Trunks/Costume, goggles, Atlantis racing hat or swim hat. • Atlantis t-shirt (t-bag) • Atlantis tracksuit bottoms and

It doesn’t provide extra energy and can cause you to ‘crash’ later in the day. Stick to foods that you are familiar with, gala day is not the time to experiment with new foods, as you don’t know how they will affect you. Eg. Bloating.

Good foods to consider packing:

• Protein based wraps or sandwiches • Small pasta salads • High protein snacks (nuts are often not allowed

poolside) • Cereal bars, flapjacks • Fresh and dried fruit • Bring lots of water and keep sipping it throughout

the day. Dehydrated muscles don’t work as well as hydrated ones!

• Printable version On the Day print this off to provide the swimmers with a detailed account of what to take, eat and what to expect on the day, this version also has a table that the swimmer can fill in with their events and times and a section to fill in on ‘what I did well’

NOTES FOR PARENTS:

Meets are always busy, noisy and hot for spectators. Wear light clothing have lots for siblings to do. Some venues like K2 and the Pavilions have leisure waters where siblings can let off steam and have some fun!

• Most meets charge an entrance fee for adults, on a per session basis. Entry is nearly always cash only, and you can usually buy programmes and raffle tickets. Children are usually free.

• Car parks are often busy on meet days. Leave time to find alternative parking – this could be a fair walk from the venue.

• Please be aware of the hosting club’s rules on photography and recording of events. These are often printed on the programme too.

• A number of meets only allow small bags poolside – enough to hold spare kit, towel, food/drink. Large bags should go in lockers.

• Spectators are usually away from the swimmers and are not allowed poolside. This can be frustrating for parents who want to comfort or support their swimmers. But it’s very important to follow the host pool’s rules.

• Behaviour; We take our duty of care to our swimmer’s very seriously, so that every swimmer can reach his or her full potential and gain a positive and rewarding experience at a competitive swimming club. The committee publishes disciplinary procedures to help

Page 14: ATLANTIS SWIMMING CLUB HORSHAM€¦ · • Swimming kit! Trunks/Costume, goggles, Atlantis racing hat or swim hat. • Atlantis t-shirt (t-bag) • Atlantis tracksuit bottoms and

everyone understand how seriously we take this responsibility towards all swimmers, parents and coaches. The code of conduct and Disciplinary Procedures are available on the website.

• Disqualifications: at some point in their career, most swimmers will get a DQ. It can be difficult and upsetting for the child, particularly if they don’t know what they’ve done wrong. Commonly, swimmers will be disqualified for technical infringements such as not touching the wall correctly, or the way the stroke is executed. These are the sort of things that coaches will repeatedly emphasise during training sessions. Coaches will always be able to find out why a swimmer has been disqualified – it’s important for parents to support and encourage their child to ensure they are in a positive frame of mind for the next race. Disqualifications are an opportunity to learn.

• Atlantis Kit: Sam Van Der Hut organises Atlantis branded kit and can be contacted at [email protected]. T-bags, hoodies, onsies and other items are ordered via Swimzi website during specific order windows. All members will receive an email to let them know when the shop is open for orders. Atlantis swim hats can be purchased from Sam.

• Meet Mobile: Is a useful app, that displays the meet events, swimmers, seed and entry times and then provisional achieved times and final placements.
