“Days of Our Lives” By Alan Talbott, President n the long running soap opera “Automotive Days Of Our Lives” the patriarch of Jaguar, the Ford Motor Company, has added yet another twist to the story. Bill Ford has stepped down as CEO and turned operational duties over to a guy familiar with turning companies around namely, Alan Mulally. Mr. Mulally, the former head of Boeing, has the background and skills to do the cost cutting that is probably necessary to make Ford profitable. What form that will be and how many divisions survive remains to be seen. I do think, however, it would be detrimental to Ford to unload Jaguar. They need the nameplate. We will see how this plays out. On a lighter note we had two activities in August that turned out great. The lake party at Wil Somer’s home on Lanier was extremely well attended with boat rides, conversation, food ( we have great cooks in this club) and drink, making this a relaxed afternoon on the water. This party just keeps getting better and attendance increases each year. Thanks to Wil and Sherry for being such accommodating hosts and thanks to all who brought dishes. This is the type of event that makes AJS such a great club! Martini night at Fernbank was also well attended. Most folks ate the catered dinner, listened to the live music and sipped martinis till and during the IMAX movie. The IMAX experience is always enjoyable with ancient Greece for the theme this time. Not only was the photography spectacular but the special effects were at least equal to the photography. Several of our members are heading to Greece this fall and certain locations in the movie were stops they intend to make. A lovely evening with friends. There is all the information on the Concours detailed elsewhere in the newsletter so I will not belabor all that, but I would like to stress how important you participation is for this event. Our host, Nalley, has been very accommodating in giving us what we need to make this a very special show. From the setting (which I doubt has ever been done at this type of location) to re-designed trophies, to a catered lunch, all will give us an opportunity for exposure we haven’t had for years. Integrated into the format for the event is our own cabinet, hand built by Fred Leo, to house a TV that will play the AJS CD to interested potential members. This will be permanently located in the Nalley showroom giving us further opportunities to grow. With the effort made by Nalley and AJS we would like to have a great showing. Please give us you support by entering your car. Wash it, bring it. If you need help with cleaning process come to the tech session. If you can offer to help with something that day contact me directly. Not everyone will win, that’s true, but we can win as a group with your help. Please remember the monthly meeting at Chicago’s on the 25 th . RSVP to Fred and Beverlee Leo at 770-949-6775 or email at [email protected]. AJS AnnualConcours d’Elegance

Nalley Jaguar , October 7, 200611507 Alpharetta Hwy., Roswell, GA

By Alan Talbott, President

his year, in a completedeparture from the norm,

AJS will hold its Concoursd’Elegance at an exciting newvenue; Nalley Jaguar in Roswell.Nalley has kindly agreed to opentheir facility to us on Saturday(please note the Saturday show dayinstead of our usual Sunday) tohold what is always a great displayof the Jaguar marques. In usingthis location we will get a highlyvisible spot on a main artery inAtlanta plus the entire front of thedealership and showroom todisplay Jags and perhaps attract anumber of visitors, which wehaven’t been able to do in otherspots around town. Also, inanother complete departure fromnorm Dick Thyer, Wayne Harrisand Bob Daley have created themost unique set of trophies thathave ever been used at a car show.We believe you will be delighted tohave one of these on display in thehome or office. All we need tomake this event work is you andyou Jag(s). If you can only makeone more event this year make itthis one.

Registration will begin at 10:00AM; car preparation will end at12:30 PM, and judging willcommence at 1:30 PM. After thecompletion of judging, trophieswill be presented for all competingclasses as well as the “People’sChoice” and John Steen Awards.

All entrants will also receive anaward commemorating theirparticipation in the 2006Concours. The rules will basicallybe the same as in past years.Again, all cars entered in thejudged classes must be driven tothe show. Any car trailored to theConcours grounds will be placed inthe Touring Class. The followingscoring system stipulates thenumber of points required forspecific awards:

Place Required Points First 94.00 to 100.00 Second 87.00 to 93.75 Third 80.00 to 86.75

In addition to the regular judgedclasses, we will continue thepractice instituted a few years agowith the Touring Class. TheTouring Class allows Jaguarowners to enter without beingjudged under normal Concoursrules. Sometimes members do notenter the regular Concours becauseof their perceived hassle inpreparing their cars for a Concoursjudged event (although this is theperfect excuse for giving your Cat,at least, a once a year thoroughcleaning); others have older, unrestored or ‘rough’ cars thatmay not be Concours ready, butwould be a delight for ourmembers to see and experience. Now there is no reason not toenter your Jag – members caneven enter different cars in boththe judged and non-judgedcategories.

If you are familiar with Nalley’slocation you know there arerestaurants up and down the roadbut nothing within walkingdistance and once at the show youmay not want to leave or can’t do

The only caveat is we must have yourRSVP and money by September 30th so please sendthat in when you register your cars or you may sendit separately. 2006 Concours d’Elegance Judging Guidelines

• ALL JUDGING IS DONE IN THE STAND-UP POSITION; I.E., UNDERSIDE OF CAR IS NOT JUDGED

• NEVER TOUCH THE CARS (HAVE THE OWNER OPEN THE DOORS, ETC.)

• DO NOT REVIEW THE SCORE SHEET WITH THE OWNER.

• DO NOT JUDGE A CLASS YOU HAVE A CAR ENTERED IN.

• REMEMBER - JUDGE’S DECISION IS FINAL!

• JUDGE FOR CLEANLINESS, AUTHENTICITY AND ‘WELL-MAINTAINED.” OLD, CLEAN AND WELL-MAINTAINED COUNTS MORE THAN NEW AND DIRTY.

• FOLLOW THE SCORE SHEET AND JUDGE ONLY THE AREA INDICATED.

• BE SURE YOU DO NOT DOUBLE PENALIZE!

• BEFORE TAKING OFF POINTS FOR “NON-ORIGINAL,” REMEMBER - JAGUAR MADE MANY VARIATIONS. IN CASE OF DOUBT CHECK WITH OTHER JUDGES, ASK OWNER ABOUT THE ITEM. IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE DO NOT REMOVE ANY POINTS.

• CAR COLOR NEED NOT BE ORIGINAL TO CAR, BUT IT MUST BE A JAGUAR COLOR FOR THAT MODEL AND YEAR. BE SURE BOOT AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT ARE SAME COLOR AS BODY.

• RADIO STYLE MUST MATCH YEAR OF CAR. BATTERIES NEED NOT BE LUCAS.

• ALL 5 TIRES MUST MATCH. TIRE BRAND IS OWNER’S CHOICE, ALTHOUGH SIZE MUSTMATCH CAR. BLACKWALL, WHITEWALL, RED STRIPE, ETC. ARE ALL OK.

• GLASS NEED NOT BE TRIPLEX.

• MANY OF THE LATER CARS (E-TYPE SII, E-TYPE SIII, XJ6, XJS) DID NOT COME WITH TOOL KITS.

• SOME DEALER OPTIONS ARE CONSIDERED ORIGINAL (I.E., SIDE MOLDING, TINTED GLASS, AMCO BARS, WIRE WHEELS, ETC.). RULE OF THUMB - IF IT MATCHES THE ERA, DO NOT PENALIZE.

• LOCAL DIRT ON TIRES IS ACCEPTABLE.

• ALL CARS ENTERED IN THE JUDGED CLASSES MUST BE BE DRIVEN TO THE EVENT. ANY CAR ARRIVING IN THE VICINITY OF THE CONCOURS GROUNDS ON A TRAILER WILL BE PLACED IN THE TOURING CLASS.
