    1. Arthur Ray16 Rowland (Arthur15, Robert Lee14, Albert Walter13, William12, Hiram11, Frederick10, Jesse9, William8, William7, William6, William5, John4, John3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was bom January 06, 1930 in Hampton, Henry County, GA. He married Priscilla Jane Thomas July 01, 1955 in Savannah, Chatham County, GA, daughter of Silas Thomas and Ruth Gibson.

Notes for Arthur Ray Rowland: I was bom in my parent's home in Hampton, Ga. I don't thinks the streets had names in those days. However today the Street is named James Street. In any case the house where I was bora, was torn down a number of years ago. I enrolled in the Hampton School in 1935. We lived in three other houses in Hampton, including one on Elm Street, until we moved to a rented house on Georgia Ave in Hapeville, GA in the summer of 1940. I was in the 6th grade at College Street School, and Miss Maybell WaU was my teacher. In the summer of 1941 we moved to Charleston, SC and Daddy worked at the Charleston Navy Yard. The first month there we lived with the Starr family and then in a 2 room duplex near the Navy Yard. Cullie and Hugh Mathews lived in the other half with their daughter Joanne. Cullie was the sister of Uncle Jim Jennings (his wife was Willie Earle Goodman, sister of Mother). Later we Uved into one of housing projects built to house worker at the Charleston Navy Yard. We moved back to Hapeville in the late fall of 1943 and I entered and later graduated from Hapeville High School in 1946. My parents and especially Mother, wanted me to go to college and made great sacrifices to do this. I received the A. B. in history, Mercer University, 1951, and a M. Ln. [Master of Librarianship] degree, Emory University, 1952. During my college years I worked as a student assistant in the library of Mercer University, and during the summers, beginning in 1947, I worked in the Wrapping and Packing Department of Rich's Department Store. I continued part time at Rich's on the weekend of my senior year at Mercer and until I moved to Savannah in December 1953. I served in the U. S. Navy, 1948-49, U. S. Navy Reserves, 1949-1954. I had been to Mercer for two years, money was tighter than ever at home, and I really did not know what I wanted to do with my life, so my college room mate, Glen Davis and I joined the Navy. After I got out of the Navy, I lived at home and spent my junior year at Ga. State College in Atlanta, then I returned to Mercer University for my senior year. Mother and Daddy had purchased in 1943 the house at 3572 Perkins St., Hapeville, Ga where I lived until I took a job at Armstrong College and moved to Savannah, Ga in December 1953. I lived in a 2 room apartment on 37th Street for about 4 month and then moved to 19 W. Gordon Street, apartment on the 3d floor, in Savannah, Ga. Jane Thomas, a professor biology at Armstrong CoUege, and my future wife lived at 17 W. Gordon St. She moved into 19 W. Gordon when we married in 1955. We lived there until we bought our first house in March 1956 on CresthiU Circle in Savannah. In Sept 1956 we moved to Auburn, Alabama and lived first at 111 Moores Circles and later on Toomer St. in Auburn. In March 1957 we moved Jacksonville, Florida and bought a new house at 2706 Loma Rd., in the Arlington section of Jacksonville. In June 1961 we moved to Augusta and lived in Monte Sano Apt. on Monte Sano Ave

in Augusta. In December 1961 we bought the house at 1339 Winter Street and Uved there until we sold the house and bought Suite 603, River Place Condoimmums at 1 Seventh St., Augusta, Ga. on 29 March 1994. In April 1996 we bought Suite 1503, one of the large penthouse types and currently live there.

I began my library career as as student assistant at the Mercer University Library in 1946. I worked at the Ga. State College Library from 1951 until Dec. 1953. January 1, 1954 to September 1956, Librarian of Armstrong College of Savannah, September 1956 until March 1958, Head of the Circulation Department of the Auburn University Library; March 1958 until June 1961 Librarian Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, and on July 1, 1961 until retirement June 30, 1991 served as Librarian and Professor Library Science at Augusta College [now Augusta State University]. Silas the first died in 1907, and Georgia married her second cousin, John T. Ponder in 1911. They had no children. Silas Leaman Thomas, II, married Ruth Gibson; they lived with Grandmother until 1936, when grandmother fixed up a tenant house for them. In 1947 they swapped houses with Grandmother and she Uved in the tenant house until she died in 1957. Both of Silas and Ruth's children were bom in this house, which now stand on Highway 83, 6 miles north of Forsyth, Ga. and one mile south of the Towaliga River. Silas lived in the big house until he died in 1989. He spend only the last two month in a nursing home. The house now belongs to Violet Thomas, the widow of Silas Leaman Thomas (III), Jane's brother Leaman who died in 1996. Jane inherited 104 acres of the Thomas land, which she sold in 1990 to buy a vacation home in the mountains. The first house in the mountain was in Rabun Gap, GA, purchased in 1989. This house was sold and a larger house was built in Franklin, NC in 1993. The house in Franklin was sold in the Spring 1995.
