Hotel design services in the region> We have an unparalleled knowledge of currentdesign thinking and best practice.

    Atkins brings together

the experience, ingenuity, management skills and financialacumen to optimise capitalprojects and deliver complexhotel and resort developments.

Our regional teams are able toprovide multidisciplinary servicesfor the hotel and leisure sectorsusing local knowledge andrelevant international expertise, thereby catering for the specificrequirements of our MiddleEast clients.

Each of our projects in the sectoris driven by exacting designprocesses that respond uniquelyto the specific demands of client, context and place. This approachoften results in a unique buildingor structure, which becomes afamiliar and symbolic landmark emblematic of its locationand respecting the uniquecharacteristics of the locale.

    Such projects often incorporate

a degree of innovation sometimes social, sometimestechnological - and they areparticularly successful when bothattributes occur together. With over two decades ofexperience in hospitality design,we have a thorough workingknowledge of design guidanceand specific legislation relatingto hotel developments.

    Based on our internally

published book Atkins HotelGuidelines, we have developeda software tool that incorporatesstandards and regulations forhotel planning and design andgenerates a schedule of hotelspace requirements which servesas a reference during pre-conceptand concept design stages.

    We have a comprehensive

understanding of the hierarchyand relationships betweendifferent operational functionsand have scrutinised manyinternational hotel operatorsrequirements and guidelines. This has given us unparalleledknowledge of current designthinking and best practice.

    To complement this, we also

have a detailed and practicalknowledge of how to translateguidance and legislation into thebuilt form to create facilities thatare fit for purpose.

Value for money and inherentflexibility are the other majorconsiderations we incorporateinto our advice. Through ourtried and tested experiences,we consider a number offundamental factors andconcerns in reaching our

recommendations on materialsand finishes. These includedurability, ease of maintenanceand the comparison of shortterm costs versus long term orwhole life costs.

To further add value, we donot overlook the importanceof back-of-house facilities. Weimaginatively treat this area -which is the heart of the hotel- to enhance living standards inthis underground community.

Our goal is to provide anambience that is more conduciveto work, thus raising morale, increasing staff efficiency anddelivering higher levels ofproductivity and services.

    Sports Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE

The design philosophy of this 400-key 63,000 sq m hotel developmentwas derived from the clients requirement for a prestigious luxury five-star hotel development with a high gold LEED rating and the abstractvision of complimenting the spirit of the existing shooting club whereit is located. This led to visualizing the building as a dynamic form risingfrom a field of green fabric.

Its final dynamic S-shaped footprint evolved from several stages ofstudies on site orientation, solar path analysis, sun shading, wind

analysis and energy modelling in addition to a number of designexercises on maximizing on the advantages of these studies.

The building faade is a symphony of different layers reflecting themultiple layers of an athletes skin, protecting and shading the endusers as well as the internal components by providing the rightambiance. It is also a composition of horizontal and vertical elements, expressed through projected balconies, canopies and offset screen, providing shade and protection from the hot summer sun as well asreducing energy consumption.

    Burj Al Arab, Dubai, UAE

Atkins was the driving force behind the exclusive design of the 321-metre high super luxury Burj AI Arab hotel thereby realising the clientsdesire to create a symbol of modern Dubai.

Most icons have in common an economy and uniqueness of form andsince the city has historically been a hub for maritime trade with Africa,India and China, it seemed appropriate to borrow from this seafaringheritage - hence the designers theme of the billowing spinnaker sail ofa hi-tech J class yacht.

Acknowledged as the tallest single structure hotel in the world, italso houses the worlds tallest atrium which at 182 metres in heightaddresses the space that is the core of the Burj AI Arab and providesa constant reminder of where you are. Access to and from the 202luxurious duplex bedroom suites is via the wide open balconies thatflank two sides of the atrium.

Shanghai Harbour City Crowne Plaza Hotel, China

The concept for the low rise, 350-bed Shanghai Harbour City CrownePlaza Hotel emanates from Atkins success in an internationalcompetition for the masterplan for Lingang New Town, nearShanghai. Resting on an island in a 500-hectare circular lake at thecentre of the new town, the hotel is aptly named, as locals liken it toa floating lotus flower.

The hotel is laid out with a central dome containing the reception andlobby, which in turn connects to five petal-shaped wings having either

hotel rooms or restaurants and meeting rooms. This simple geometryallows all rooms to have unobstructed views of the lake. Atriums, designed as themed gardens, illuminate and ventilate the split centralcorridors leading to the rooms.

Separate from the hotel are a small marina and clubhouse, childrensplaygrounds, gardens and other amenities to complete the island resort.
