Director’s Note Hermia wants to marry Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander flee Athens into the nearby woods. They are pursued by Demetrius, who is aided by Helena, who loves him. The lovers are unaware of the presence of the king and queen of the fairies, who are fighting. The woods are crowded and also include six comic tradesmen preparing a play to celebrate the duke’s wedding. When Puck applies the love potion to the wrong lover’s eyes, the young lovers get crisscrossed. When the proud Titania is enchanted, she falls in love with Bottom, who now sports the head of a donkey! Our version is set in the early 1960s when the court is in Athens, and the later 1960s once we meet the fairies. With both original and borrowed music, our version of this play is bursting with comic energy! “The course of true love never did run smooth.” What does it all mean? Shakespeare was a poet of the stage, not an essayist. Some critics see the play as exploring male versus female power within love relationships; what is less clear is which side Shakespeare may be on. After all, both Hermia and Helena end up with the man they choose. What is absolutely clear is that the play is a lot of fun, and we are very glad that you are joining us to see high school students making art out of a script from the 1590s. --N. Rosen

Scott Jones (SNUG) is excited about his second year in AHS Drama. Some of Scott’s favorite roles in the past include Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls, Harold Hill in The Music Man and Lysander in Midsummer Night’s Dream. He was also in Bye Bye Birdie and Dear Edwina and played Bugsy Malone in Bugsy Malone. Scott wants to thank his family for their continued support and Mr. Rosen for providing the opportunity for this fantastic experience.

Colin Klopp (ENSEMBLE) is a freshman and is looking forward to four years with the drama department! Past roles include Daniel in Daniel and the Lions, Mozart’s Father in Of Mice and Mozart, and an ensemble member in David and Goliath. Hope you like the show!

Ricky Lasser (STARVELING) shines brighter than the moon, but ironically, his hair is the color of the sun. He is quite happy to be in his 4th Atholton show. Previous roles include a Nool in Seussical, Page in Once in a Lifetime, and Boy 1 and/or 2 in Footloose. Theater is his life. He would like to thank the people all the way back at home, his supskies divine friends, his parents for driving him places, his brothers for leaving the house to him now that they’re both at college, Domina, the rest of his family, and Maverick.

Nyambura Mbugurio (MUSTARDSEED) is easily the cutest girl in the drama department. She has participated in: Harvey, Merrily We Roll Along, Seussical, and Footloose. She is captain of the AHS Color Guard and has helped with costumes for the drama productions. Despite popular misconception, she is a SENIOR!

Chelsea Meissner (MOTH) is ecstatic to be part of A Midsummer Night’s Dream her fourth major production at Atholton. In addition to acting, she has taken on the set design for this show and is thrilled to see how well it has come out. Chelsea is so proud of everyone in the show and looks forward to being a part of the spring musical, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. She would like to thank Mr. Rosen for his help during the design process.

Chelsea Miller (TITANIA) is very excited to be in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and to be playing Queen of the Fairies. As a senior and the Drama Goddess, Chelsea has been an active member of the Drama Department since her freshman year. This deity has been a part of

every production from acting; to being part of tech and even Assistant Directing last year’s spring musical Footloose. Chelsea is a deep lover of nature and its creatures, including the North American Singing Donkey. She is glad to share this experience with her sister Jessica. She would like to thank Mr. Rosen for this wonderful opportunity. Break a leg cast and crew!

Jessica Miller (ENSEMBLE) is very excited to be a part of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as her first production. In her spare time she enjoys singing and dancing. Good luck, everyone!

Maureen Monk (COSTUMES)—After working on Once in a Lifetime, and Footloose, Maureen entered her second year working backstage. She had a blast working on the costumes for A Midsummer Nights Dream. Maureen thanks Mr. Rosen and Mrs. Gurwitz for the opportunity to design and build a donkey head; one of her life long ambitions is now fulfilled. Maureen also thanks all the costume crew for making digging in boxes and diving in closets a lot of fun- way to go costumers! Finally, Maureen thanks her parents for sharing their first hand knowledge of the late sixties and early seventies- you are both old as dirt but I love you. Jamie Nagel (ENSEMBLE FAIRY) is a sophomore at Atholton High School and is glad to be in her 2nd AHS production. Jamie is in the advanced dance class at the school. This past summer, Jamie was in two Shakespeare productions with HCC’s Actor’s Studio, playing Kate in The Taming of the Shrew, and Margaret in Much Ado About Nothing. Jamie thanks the cast and crew for 2 months of hard work and can’t wait for the show. Break a leg everyone!

Austin Nam (OBERON)King of the FairiesThe Greatest Thing since Sliced BreadHe will blow your mind.

Erin Nicole Patterson (HELENA) is a sophomore, happy to be in her 3rd AHS production. When she’s not chasing boys on stage, she’s marching after them with a piccolo. Erin also sings in the school choir, and acts with Peter Sklar at the Beginnings Workshop in NYC. When Erin isn’t acting on stage, she’s behind the scenes helping with costumes. She thanks her parents for driving her to and from rehearsals.

Caitlin Rogers (ENSEMBLE FAIRY) is psyched to be in her third AHS production. She started with Footloose last year and played Puck in Shakespeare in Hollywood. She also is a member of the All County Improv Team of Howard County. She loves her fellow fairies, the Divine Nine! She also loves the Tech Crew, because we couldn’t do anything without them. Break a leg!

Mr. Nathan Rosen (Director) has directed lots of shows, including Hamlet, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mr. Rosen has taught theatre at AHS since 1997. He is married to Robbie and the father of Marielle, Alyssa, Sam, Dani, Zack, and Brina. Thanks to Folger’s Teaching Shakespeare workshop (1991).

Melia Stuppy (COBWEB) is best known for her memorable performance as Second Girl in Once in a Lifetime. When she’s not dodging the paparazzi or practicing her Oscar acceptance speeches, you can find Melia writing Atholton drama members’ cast bios and baking cupcakes in her kitchen. Become a fan at www.mmmeliacakes.com.

Ben Vaughn (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR) is happy to be an assistant director of Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has been doing drama since his freshman year, but now is trying his hand at directing. He hopes that the cast and crew break their legs out there! He enjoys long walks on the beach and blue Kool-Aid.

Sarah Whiteford (A FAIRY) is delighted to be a part of the Fairy community in A Midsummer Nights Dream. When she is not flying over hill and dale she dances with the Atholton Senior Dance Company and sings with the AHS Madrigals, Chamber and Concert choirs. Her theater credits include Rusty in the AHS production of Footloose, Annie in the TYS production of Annie, Cinderella in Cinderella, Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls and Asaka in Once on this Island. All the best to Midsummer cast and crew!

Brian Yawney (DEMETRIUS) is currently a senior at AHS. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is his seventh show at Atholton. After performing in Harvey, Merrily We Roll Along, Diary of Anne Frank: Revised, Seussical, Once In A Lifetime, and Footloose, he has found the theatre to be his home away from home. He has enjoyed working with everyone and hopes to continue with the Drama Department here at Atholton until he graduates. Brian thanks his parents, friends, fellow thespians, and especially Mr. Rosen for being so supportive and encouraging. Enjoy the show!
