ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

Benedict College will provide a high-quality educational experience for its student-athletes through successful competition in intercollegiate athletics in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and intramural activities on campus, while simultaneously maintaining and enhancing the academic profile and achievements of the student-athletes and contributing significantly to the successful marketing of the college.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT VISION STATEMENT

The Athletic Department fully embraces Benedict College’s mission and enacts its policies, procedures, and initiatives with both the letter and the spirit of that purpose.

The administration and staff of the Athletic Department espouses a student- centered philosophy, which ranks academic achievement as the number one priority for its athletes. Toward this end, the department is committed to provid-ing a comprehensive intercollegiate athletic program for men and women, which promotes the academic, physical, social, psychological, and total development of the student-athlete. Further, the department is committed to working collab-oratively with other constituents of the college to ensure the production of com-petent, contributing graduates who are capable of making the transition from university life into the workplace and today’s multicultural society.

Embodied within this mission statement is the concept of an effective athletic program which values success in competition, in the academic and personal development of student-athletes, and in maintaining full compliance with the rules of the college, the NCAA, SIAC, and Title IX.

John Brown was an outstanding Coach and Athletic Director at Benedict College from 1951 to 1983. Mr. Brown coached football, baseball and basketball. His basketball teams brought Benedict more national recognition than any other sport in the College’s history.

In Coach Brown’s 17 years as Head Basket-ball Coach, the Tigers compiled a 271-171 re-cord and from 1956 to 1963, the Tigers went undefeated at home under Brown’s guidance. The 1960-61 squad was the nation’s high-est-scoring small college basketball team, averaging 101.2 points per game. Coach Brown’s tenure was the longest of any coach in Benedict’s history.

This award is given to the Most Outstand-ing Student-Athlete each year at the Athletic Banquet.

Jimmy Green introduced himself to Benedict College football in 1957, as a sensational freshman quarterback and tailback, leading the Tigers to a 6-4 record and top place in total offense (passing and rushing) among teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Mr. Green graduated in 1962 and was draft-ed by the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League, but accepted a larger bonus from the Montreal Allouetes of the Canadian Football League. His promising career was cut short due to a severe knee injury.

The Jimmy Green Memorial Inspirational Ath-lete Award is given to any student-athlete who has been confronted with life-altering expe-riences and has utilized perseverance, ded-ication, and determination to overcome the event. This award is presented in recognition of Mr. Green’s dedication and commitment to Benedict College.

Where the golden sunshine falls,Rusting leaves about her,

Breezes whispering round her wallsStands our Alma Mater

Students all, a sturdy band,Loud our voices ringing,

Of her kindly helping hand, Of our love, we’re singing.

We’ll remember in the yearsComing swiftly towards us,

All the smiles, but not the tearsAlma Mater brought us.

If the path of life be dimAnd the way be dreary,

Alma Mater points to Him,Who will guide the weary.

(CHORUS)

Alma Mater, strong and true,Alma Mater, ever!

Benedict, we sing to you, Faithful we forever.
