EXPOW COMPANY

EXPOW had its origins in the will of an experienced team to offer a new range of motors for use in explosive

atmospheres to the market, suited to the economical, technical and logistical contemporary context, and to

offer its clients the combination of a manufacturer’s expertise and proximity.

The company has been subject to the quality assurance notification LCIE 06 ATEX Q 8002 which attests the

compliance of its quality system to the quality reference (CEI 80079-34) required by the European directive EC

94/9 “ATEX”.

The business of EXPOW concerns design, production and marketing of:

An ATEX range of small and medium power induction motors, endowed with innovative features and

able to fan out quickly according to a large number of variants and options.

An ATEX range of inverted motors (variable speed) AC and DC.

ATEX “Application motors” specially designed for a particular application in a framework of technical

and economic optimisation.

EXPOW can supply three-phase and single-phase motors. The latter are designed with a centrifugal switch (high

starting torque) or with permanent capacitor (quadratic torque) according to the application.

The design of motors corresponds with category 2G or 2GD (zones 1(EPL Gb)(*) and zone 21(EPL Db)) of the

regulations for surface appliances (Group II), and with the Ex d flameproof enclosure protection mode

(optionally Exe increased safety for terminal boxes) associated, for dust environments, to protection mode

“enclosure t” Ex t and to the protection index IP65 .

The accepted gas environment covers the classifications IIB and IIC and the temperature classes T4 (135°C) to

T6 (85°C). The T4 temperature class is certified for an extended temperature field – 20 to +50 °C.

The accepted dust environment covers dust in cloud (IIIA), electrically conducting dust layers (IIIC) and non-

conducting dust layers (IIIB), scenarios of dust layers with less than 5 mm, and the 125°C temperature class.

ENFORCEABLE LEGISLATION The ATEX electric motor is doubly compliant, both to the “explosive atmospheres” safety legislation and to the

standards that define the technical references applicable both to motors for explosive atmospheres and

standard motors.

REGULATIONS FOR EXPLOSIVE AREAS

Main technical requirements:

The user of equipment intended for explosive atmospheres must define the frequency and nature (gas or / and

dust) of the dangerous exposure it will be subjected, according to the installation area. He shall base himself on

European directive EC99/92 for defining the suitable category for the equipment (cat. 1,2, or 3, gas or / and

dust). The equipment category is linked one to one to the “Equipment Protection Level” EPLa, EPLb, EPLc. In

addition, this directive also states the obligations in matters of installation and maintenance.

The manufacturer designs and makes the equipment for the required category/EPL, according to European

directive EC94/9 called “ATEX”. Apart from the “essential safety requirements”, the directive imposes the

implementation of protection modes, consisting of design strategies in such a way to avoid inflammation of the

environment where the equipment is located. The compliance presumption of the equipment with this

directive is acquired by the application of available harmonised standards for each of the protection modes.

For the electrical equipment and electric motors in particular, the harmonised standards are the following:

 Gas G:

General rules: EN 60079-0

Ex d flameproof enclosure protection mode d : EN 60079-1

Ex e enhanced safety protection mode e : EN 60069-7

Ex p internal over-pressure protection mode p : EN 60079-2

Ex nX limited energy protection mode nX : EN 60079-15

Ex iX intrinsic safety protection mode iX : EN 60069-11

Ex m encapsulation protection mode xm : EN 60079-18

 Dust D:

General rules: EN 60079-0

Ex t enclosure protection mode t : EN 60079-31 ( ta : Zone 20, tb : Zone 21, tc : Zone 22)

The table below summarises the concepts developed above :

99/92/EC 94/9/EC Motor design : Protection modes

Zone Risk Adapted equipment Gas « G » environment Dust « D » environment

0-20 permanent Cat. 1 G or D

2-22

For all practical purposes, only zones 1-21 and 2-22 can accept electrical motors. Indeed the design of 2

combined protection modes for a duty in zone 0 do not show any economical interest.

Elsewhere, the legislator has integrated all the other European directives to which the equipment must refer

into the regulation perimeter of the directive “ATEX” EC94/9. For the electric motor, this is the case of the

“machinery” directive (EC 98/37), “electromagnetic compatibility” directive (EC 89/336) and low voltage

directive (EC 73/23).

Other compulsory requirements :

 Quality insurance notification:

The manufacturers of category 2 electrical equipment must obtain a quality assurance notification

according to CEI 80079-34 from a Notify Body ( NB _ LCIE and INERIS in France ) that, in particular,

guarantees that the manufacturer is able to ensure the requirements of directive EC 94/9 and those

belonging to the protection modes (harmonised standards ) in a controlled and lasting way.

 Equipment compliance assessment

The NB is implementing an EC type examination procedure to show the compliance of new equipment

to harmonised standards. The result is the establishment of an EC type examination attestation.

 Compliance marking

The directive requires marking, in particular including:

. The EC mark, the distinctive mark Ex of equipment for explosive atmospheres and reference

to the NB involved in certification.

. The marking of the equipment category and protection mode

Supply with each equipment of safety instructions in the language of the manufacturer’s country and

that of the user's country.

Establishment of an EC compliance declaration

This document is the commitment to compliance with Directive EC 94/9 established under the

manufacturer’s responsibility. This is, for the user, an official attestation of compliance.

DESIGN VARIANTS

The design of the EXPOW range allows the use of the motor as much for traditional drive applications as

for uses where control of torque, speed and position are required.

For this purpose, the motor comes in variations corresponding with additional features. These variations

have been designed in the form of modules that keep the general line of the motor, and whose integration

level makes it possible to limit excessive lengths:

Auxiliary fan The use of this module is meant for three-phase motors.

The module rotates the ventilation turbine at a constant 3000 Rpm speed and makes it possible to keep

cooling characteristics, and consequently the load of the motor, when the motor is running at a slow

speed. For example, this is the situation encountered in use with a frequency inverter.

Inversely, for applications where the motor shaft speed goes beyond 3000 Rpm, the high level of noise

caused by the turbine justifies detaching it from the motor shaft and using the auxiliary fan module whose

speed is fixed at 3000 Rpm.

The main characteristics of the module are:

 Exd flameproof enclosure.

 80 W power, three-phase supply to standards.

Specific terminal box for the module (Exd or Exe) or installed cable.

Module integrated in the diameter of the standard motor.

Low extra length ( 75 up to 130 mm).

Module with hollow shaft on request, allowing the motor shaft to go through and the fitting of an

encoder or a tachometer dynamo to the back of the motor or a second shaft end (Only frames 63

to 100 mm).

Brake

• Frames 63 up to 100 mm The brake module is a flameproof enclosure module fitted with a lack of current brake, ensuring the

braking as soon as its electrical supply is switched off.

The brake used is a direct current device from which a rectifier can be wired (inside the terminal d box ) to

make the connection to an AC single-phase network or one of the motor phase. This cell can itself present

an optional feature to brake for shortened durations.

Also, a brake control “energy saver” system can be used. It allows the operation of brake with a larger gap,

which has the effect of spacing out the times between two consecutive adjustments of the brake disk.

The brake installed in the module varies according to whether the use is “static” (the need to hold the

shaft locked when the motor is stopped) or “dynamic” (braking profile controlled whilst the motor is

running).

As a standard, the motor brake is fitted with a dynamic brake.

A manual hand release option makes possible to release the motor shaft rotation by a voluntary

intervention on a clutch lever. As soon as the lever is released, it takes a stable position again ensuring the

effect of engaging the brake.

The main characteristics of the module are:

 Exd flameproof enclosure

Connection in the main motor terminal box.

Module integrated in the diameter of the standard motor.

Low extra length (85 to 105 mm depending on the motor size).

Adjustment of the brake pad without dismantling the motor compartment.

Many possibilities of supply and brake control.

Module allowing the motor shaft to go through the enclosure to drive the ventilation turbine, and

the installation of a second shaft end or an encoder or a tachometer generator.

This module can be associated with the auxiliary ventilation module. In this case, an air flow

guide is provided for to channel the air from the ventilation turbine to the motor fins.

• Frames 112 and 132 mm

The brake module is a separate flameproof enclosure equipped with a three phase lack of current brake. It is

fitted behind motor, side B. It is supplied with its own cable either to be cabled by EXPOW on the motor supply

terminal plate inside the terminal box, or by customer on a separate line. A manual hand release is also

available for this module.

Encoder

Whichever variation is used (standard motor, motor with auxiliary fan, motor with brake, motor with brake and

auxiliary fan), EXPOW is offering an “encoder” option that consists of interfacing an Exd encoder at the back of

the motor (side B). The catalogue option is built with a model selected by us. However, the fitting of a model

proposed by the user is taken into consideration if necessary.

Guide for selection and use

GENERALITY

The choice of an electric motor for explosive atmospheres considers data related to the dangerous

environment, apart from determining electro-technical specifications (power, speed, supply, etc.) :

Destination : mines or surface industries (group I or group II)

Nature: gas or / and dust, explosion group (Gas : IIA,IIB,IIC ; Dust : IIIA,IIIB,IIIC) and acceptable

temperature class (T4,T5,T125°C,T5,T6 ..).

Classification of the dangerous area according to the time the explosive atmosphere will be

present : an electric motor could be used in zone 1 or in zone 2.

These data make it possible to define the equipment category/EPL that can be installed: Equipment for zone 1

will be category 2/EPLb, equipment for zone 2 will be category 3/EPLc. If the environment is gas-filled, the

category will be followed by the letter “G”, the letter “D” if the atmosphere is dust-filled, and “GD” for

combined situations. The protection mode used in the design of the equipment will take into consideration the

physical properties of the medium (group IIA or IIB or IIC and/or IIIA or IIIB or IIIC, temperature class).

The installation and maintenance must ensure the maintenance and long life of the motor’s safety functions.

The manufacturer delivers safety instructions with each motor for its safe installation. The equipment is to be

maintained by qualified persons and repaired in the manufacturer’s premises, or by an EXPOW-approved

repairshop.

For the installation and maintenance, the user can rely on the following standards:

NF EN 60079-14: Electrical installations in dangerous areas.

NF EN 60079-17: Recommendations for the inspection and maintenance of electrical

installations in dangerous areas.

NF EN 60079-19: Repairs and overhauls to equipment used in explosive atmospheres.

USE WITH INVERTER The supply of an asynchronous motor by a frequency inverter allows its rotation speed to be modified.

This possibility makes the motor attractive in many processes where the speed must vary, from the direct

control of a machine by an operator, up to integration in sophisticated control-command loops.

This operating mode brings additional constraints into the operation and use of the motor.

Thermal duty of the motor :

The nature of the signals supplying the motor, the associated cooling efficiency variations, for the self-

ventilated motors, to the rotation speed, involve a thermal duty that is highly very dependent on the of motor

control conditions. To prevent the motor temperature exceeding the authorised limit for its temperature class,

legislation requires that a thermal protector (of PTC type in general) is installed in the motor windings that the

user integrates it into an electric circuit ensuring the sure stopping of the motor in the event of overheating.

The whole security loop must fulfil with a SIL (Security Integrates Level) grade according to EN 50450.

In addition, in order to avoid the installation stopping due to motor overheating, the tables of paragraph

“Profiles for use with frequency inverter“ define the maximum acceptable motor torque depending on the

frequency, according to the ventilation conditions.

Electro-magnetic compatibility :

The nature of the signals supplying the motor is favourable to the generation of electromagnetic disturbances

radiated by the motor supply cable. One is strongly advised to use a shielded cable.

18

Special marking – Taking of the order :

The standard marking of a motor used with a frequency inverter carries 3 specific pieces of information:

Presence of a thermal protection, value of the transition temperature and mention

of the obligatory use.

Indication of the limit frequency of use.

Mention of the existence of manufacturer data for the profile of use

When establishing the order acknowledgement, our sales services will check the planned use of the motor :

connection on a traditional network or with a frequency inverter.

In the first case, the motor description attributes shall include: “frequency 50 or 60Hz”.

In the second case, the mention “use with frequency inverter” will be included. It will imply the presence of a

thermal protector and the definition of the cable entry type chosen by the client (for shielded cable or non-

shielded cable).

Profiles for use with frequency inverter :

The torque performances of a motor used with a frequency inverter depend on :

The torque profile or the power to be delivered by the motor depending on the

frequency ie. motor speed) and on the supply strategy :

Profile A Quadratic torque from 5 to 50 Hz Profile B Constant torque from 10 to 50 Hz

Profile C Constant torque from 5 to 50 Hz Profile C* Constant torque from 5 to 87 Hz

Profile D Constant torque from 5 to 50 Hz

USE WITH BRAKE ( Frames 63 up to 100 mm )

The brakes for “BR” options are “lack of current” type (braking when the brake is not supplied) and with supply

by direct current. As a standard, the brake motor is fitted with a rectifier cell (50-60 Hz) allowing a connection

of the brake via the AC motor supply. However, when the motor is connected to a frequency inverter, the

voltage delivered to the motor cannot be used for the braking device. In this case, consider to make a specific

connection to an AC 50-60Hz network for the brake.

Electrical connection to the braking device

The possibilities for connection are defined by the following scheme:

The rectifier, placed in the motor terminal box, may be supplied ( ∼ ∼ ) :

Either directly to the motor’s terminal plate. The rectifier is the same whether the

motor is coupled in star or delta. The motor supply voltage value allows EXPOW to

define the voltage parameters of the rectifier and the brake.

Or on a separated line, in this case EXPOW installs a rectifier adapted to the voltage

delivered by this line and provides for an additional cable input on the terminal box.

The user must ensure the synchronisation of the KM and KB switchgears.

The maximum dispersion of the supply voltage from the rectifier must be lower than + - 10% of the nominal

voltage.

Reduction in the braking response time :

The braking response time can be reduced by :

• A suitable wiring of the contact marked on the above diagram. The replacement of

the short-circuit strap by the wiring of an additional contact associated with KM allows this

reduction. In the absence of an indication particular to the order, the motor-brake is

configured in normal time, strap in place on the rectifier.

• The use of an integrated EXPOW module, no external connection necessary. Please consult.

The following table provides the times of beginning (t11) and end (T1) of the braking

according to the type of wiring and the size of the brake.

Improvement of brake availability - brake saver :

A specific rectifier allows an operation of the brake with a larger gap, situation found when the brake pad is

very worn. The loosening of the brake is carried out, even in the event of high wear-out, by an increased

voltage on the coil for a limited time of 350 ms. Beyond this time, the voltage is lowered whilst ensuring the

holding. Its value ensures control over the energy dissipation of the brake.

This specific device “brake saver” doubles the wear reserve between two gap adjustments in relation to a

traditional rectifier. All the same, its use is possible only with a brake with a coil voltage of 105 V DC. In

addition, its installation requires the use of a larger terminal box.

Energy limits :

The brake may be used to immobilize moving or stationary loads. A “dynamic” brake is used in the first case, a

“static” brake in the second. The static brake gives a greater holding torque than the dynamic brake (See

section “Functional Characterisitics”). On the other hand, its wear when in movement is more pronounced than

that of a dynamic brake, which gives rise to more frequent gap adjustments.

Dynamic braking causes a heating of the brake which contributes, with self-heating of the coil when the brake

in inactive, to the increase of brake and flameproof enclosure temperatures. The table below shows the

maximum braking energies allowed for a dynamic brake. This gauge makes it possible to ensure the thermal

holding of the brake and the motor not going over the temperature class T4 for 2 and 4 poles applications. In

the case of 6 and 8 poles motors, derating should be envisaged. Consult please.

Manual clutch option :

The manual clutch makes it possible to free the motor shaft when the brake is not under voltage, by voluntary

action on a lever. As soon as the lever is released, it returns to home position by elastic back action and lock

the shaft.

Maintenance :

Maintenance of the rectifier (Frames 63 up to 100mm)

In the event of changing the rectifier, it is necessary to use a component approved by EXPOW, suited to the AC

input voltage and the brake operation DC voltage (information given on the maker plate of the motor). The

usually found cases are the following :

Brake supply (VDC) Rectifier supply (VAC) Rectifier type

Voltage (VAC) Type (*) : S or D

105 230 230 S

Or « Brake Saver »

180 400 400 S

205 230 230 D

(*) S = Half wave rectifier - D = Full wave bridge rectifier

Maintenance of the brake :

The brake gap must be periodically cleaned and adjusted to compensate for wear of the pad. This operation

must be carried out with the greatest care to ensure the quality of braking and to preserve the flameproof

character of the brake enclosure. The operation must be carried out in the EXPOW workshops or an EXPOW-

approved repairshop.

Information to give when ordering :

The information to be given, in addition to those concerning the motor are the following:

Nature of braking : static or dynamic

Mode of connecting the rectifier and voltage (frames 63 up to 100mm only)

Mode for connecting brake : motor terminal box or external ( frames 112 and 132 only)

Standard or reduced braking time (frames 63 up to 100mm only)

 Number of starts per hour

 Any options :

• Manual clutch

• Brake saver (frames 63 up to 100mm only)

RANGE FOR INVERTED ATEX AC AND DC MOTORS

Inverted motor, frequency control on box Inverted motor, frequency control on box, auxiliary fan

Variable speed technique for induction motors improves process performances and flexibility, while bringing

better energy efficiency.

EXPOW offer a range of ATEX induction motors with an embedded compact inverter in the volume of terminal

box. These products are dedicated to applications for which local control is necessary or when it is advisable to

decentralize inverter.

The inverter is parametrized in EXPOW for a process and a working procedure defined with customer.

Implementation is easy, no expertise is required in the area of variable speed .

A whole set of integrated protections (voltage, current ) and thermistors SIL 1 carried out safety in service and

temperature security requested by ATEX regulations. Furthermore the inverter is equipped with an integrated

EMC filter.

Frequency changing (standard 1:5) is obtained by a potentiometer fitted on terminal box, or by an isolated

signal 4-20mA or 0-10V (RS485 : please consult). According to thermal decoupling between motor enclosure

and terminal box, the temperature class of inverted motor is the one of the standard ATEX motor of the range.

Available inverted motors covers range 0,12 up to 0,75kW (other values, please consult). For very low speed

long time duty, option « auxiliary fan » can be proposed (three phase AC supply only) in order to avoid power

downsizing.

The inverted motor range is proposed for two types of mains supply :

Direct current supply 12/24/48 VDC (on-board equipment / rescue systems / photovoltaics and wind

systems ) for typical oil and gas and offshore applications .

Inverted motors for direct current supply are induction motors driven with an integrated UPS . They

show characteristics of induction motors and are by the fact « brushless ». If needed, parametrizing

can be achieve for a fixed value, making the motor a ATEX “classical” DC motor .

Alternating current supply 230 VAC (single or three phase).

Below tables show the list of available inverted motors :

DESIGN VARIANTS

Auxiliary fan

The use of this module is only possible for 230AC three phase mains. The design of auxiliary fan module is the

same than the one described page 14. The fitting of auxiliary fan on inverted motor avoid downsizing of power

range when motor must be driven at low frequencies (generally lower than 10 Hz) – consult. Encoder variant

can be combined with auxiliary fan variant.

Encoder

EXPOW is offering an “encoder” option that consists of interfacing an Exd encoder at the back of the motor.

The catalogue option is built with a model selected by us. However, the fitting of a model proposed by the user

is taken into consideration if necessary.

30

Guide for selection and use Chapter « Generality » page 17 is practicable for inverted motors.

SPECIFICATION OF INVERTER FUNCTION

Following elements must be specified when ordering :

 Motor type (tables page 26)

 Supply voltage

• AC inverted motor : 230VAC single phase or 230VAC three phase

• DC inverted motor : 12, 24 ou 48VDC

Variable frequency field 10–50 Hz for standard – consult please for other values.

Frequency control, select one between below listed possibilities :

• Potentiometer :

A vernier allows frequency identification by steps which value is 7,5% of the whole range.

Between two steps, estimation is better than +- 2,5%. Stopping of inverted motor is effective

inside a neutral area at the beginning of potentiometer path. When switching on the motor

starting can be effective only after a transition in this area.

• Signal 0-10V or 4-20mA :

Isolated inputs protected against overvoltage/overcurrent. Accuracy +- 2,5% .

• RS 485 net : consult, please.

As an option, slip between frequency control and true speed on shaft can be compensated.

 Characteristics of driven system :

Parametrizing in EXPOW premises requires following datas :

• Type of driven process ( fan, mixing, pump, lifting..) entraîné

• Torque profile

• Acceleration limits

USE The supply of an asynchronous motor by a frequency inverter allows its rotation speed to be modified.

The whole security loop must fulfil with a SIL (Security Integrated Level) grade according to EN 50450.

In addition, in order to avoid the installation stopping due to motor overheating, the tables of paragraph

“Profiles for use with frequency inverter“ define the maximum acceptable motor torque depending on the

frequency, according to the ventilation conditions.

Electro-magnetic compatibility :

The electromagnetic disturbances generated by the embedded inverter are mainly of “conducted mode”

through the supply cable. An EMC integrated filter limit these disturbances to the normative limits and also

guarantee the susceptibility level.

Strategy for temperature protection :

 Standard method :

The PTC SIL1 integrated in the inverted motor (watching both winding and electronics temperature)

are connected by user to a SIL1 relay used to guarantee a secured motor switch off.

 Self protection method (option)

Temperature sensors SIL1 fitted inside the inverted motor are included in a physical loop which

guarantee the secured motor switch off when overheating occurs. As long as temperature sensors

didn’t trip back, motor starting is impossible. After cooling, switch on is possible with a transition of

frequency control to neutral position. As an option, a warning signal informing of overheating can be

supplied.

Special marking – Taking of the order :

The standard marking of a motor used with a frequency inverter carries 3 specific pieces of information :

Presence of a thermal protection, value of the transition temperature and mention

of the obligatory use.

 Indication of the limit frequencies.

Mention of manufacturer data available for the working torque profile

APPLICATION MOTORS AND SPECIFIC MOTORS

APPLICATION MOTORS

The requirements of competitiveness and profitability involve thought about the validity of a motor dedicated

to the application, since the product must be subjected to a significant distribution.

The design of the application motor takes into account, in addition to the elements specific to the ATEX,

dimensional requirements (dimensions, fixing, etc.), functional requirements (electrical network, power, duty,

function housed in the motor, etc.), environmental requirement (temperature, sealing, etc.), quantitative and

financial requirements (strategy of manufacture) specific of the application.

The result in all cases is a product that is strictly suited for its use, more or less sophisticated compared to the

catalogue product, according to the case.

The development of an application motor is appropriate from the moment that the quantities reach a few

hundred per year and the technical specifications is different from that of the catalogue range motor, by excess

or deficiency. It generally implies the establishment of an EC Examination Attestation specific type.

Below, some generic cases to turn to an application motor:

Duty allowing the reduction of construction and finishing, leading to a lower price.

Particular electro-technical features that cannot be provided by the catalogue options.

Necessity for integration in a volume and / or according to an existing interface, for example,

transformation of a standard product range into an ATEX range.

Integration of electro-technical or electronic features usually carried out upstream from the motor (On

/ off command, integrated electronic functions (frequency inverter, etc.).

Example 1 : Unventilated low cost motor Example 2 : Motor integrated in a reduced volume

with short energized periods. with high ratio power/volume

SPECIFIC MOTORS Specific motors are necessary to fulfil special requests often linked to mechanical or electrotechnical

integration. Electrical characteristics of motors are in majority of cases standard.

Example 3 : Motor with long shaft. Example 4 : Motor with hollow shaft

Example 5 : Motor equipped with Example 6 : ATEX certified assembly
