The Worlds Largest Titanic Attraction Opening In BelfastOne hundred years after the birth of the worlds most famous ship, the 97 million Titanic Belfast has become a major new tourist attraction for Northern Ireland. Its centrepiece is a stunning recreation of the Titanics iconic Grand Staircase by Torquay-based architects Kay Elliott. Titanic Belfast is an iconic 14,000 sq m (150,700 sq ft), six-floor building featuring nine interpretive and interactive galleries that explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Titanic, as well as the City and people which made her. The worlds largest Titanic visitor experience accommodates a dark ride, underwater exploration theatre, recreations of the ships cabins, interactive technologies and a luxurious conference and banqueting venue, the Titanic Suite. As faithful to the original as modern building regulations and design constraints allow, the recreation of the staircase is the focal point of the 1,000-seater Titanic Suite, Belfasts largest dedicated banqueting space. The near-replica Grand Staircase is 23ft high and 24ft wide, has 23 steps, weighs nearly four tonnes and is made up of 10,000 individual parts. It was built in six separate sections using red oak, the same wood which was used for the Titanics Grand Staircase. Six joiners worked on the project and its estimated to have taken 1,500 manhours over four months to complete. The challenge of matching the craftsmanship of original designers Harland & Wolff was met by Oldtown Joinery, a specialist joinery firm from Bellaghy, Co. Londonderry, using materials and techniques similar to those used in the shipyard 100-years ago. Alongside the design of the staircase, Kay Elliott was also responsible for the interior design, making sure a high quality visitor experience was created. Titanic Belfast includes four public entrances, a four storey atrium, temporary exhibition galleries, the 1,000 seat banqueting suite/conference centre, pre function areas, education and community facilities, restaurants, retail spaces and an underground car park. Mark Muir, Kay Elliotts Project Director for Titanic Belfast, said: A major challenge was the lack of complete drawings of the original staircase. We developed a detailed 3D technical model based on photographs of the original staircase onboard Titanics sister ship Olympic - a job which involved painstaking detective work over several months so we could be as true to the design as possible. The result is a stunning centrepiece of the Titanic, located on the top two floors of the attraction, that itself offers a journey through history, showcasing key points in the Titanic ships life. It is also testament to the skills of the many designers and craftsman involved. Tim Husbands, Titanic Belfasts CEO, added: Titanics Grand Staircase is one of the most well-known focal points of the worlds most famous ship and is synonymous with the grandeur of Edwardian society. Titanic Belfast is the worlds largest Titanic visitor attraction and we want to bring the Titanic story alive for our visitors and guests from all over the world and replicate the timeless elegance that was designed to impress the first class passengers onboard. Kay Elliott and Oldtown Joinery have done a superb job on an extremely intricate and detailed process virtually every part of the near-replica Grand Staircase has been hand crafted in the traditional way. www.kayelliott.co.uk www.titanicbelfast.com

Coillte Panel Products Supports UKTI And UK Green Building Council At Ecobuild 2012DRICON Celebrates 25 Years Of BBA AccreditationTimber is a valuable and versatile building material, but just like concrete or steel, it can be open to the threat of fire. In April 2012, DRICON, Arch Timber Protections water-based fire retardant, will celebrate 25 years of continuous British Board of Agrment (BBA) accreditation, giving confidence and reassurance of long-term and safe fire protection to the contractors, designers and most important of all, occupants of buildings and structures that use timber for all or part of their construction. DRICON, which has been used to protect solid timber and timber panels for more than 30 years worldwide, is the only BBA-approved fire retardant protection for timber. As well as BBA accreditation, Arch has classification reports from independent certification organisations for a wide range of species and thicknesses of timber for a number of different end uses, to confirm customers confidence in the fire retardant properties. At Ecobuild (March 2012) the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) and the UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) again turned to Coillte Panel Products to supply FSC certified panel products Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB in order to create their largest presence ever at Ecobuild. As the number one source of green information, events and activities for the built environment, UK-GBC uniquely brings together those involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of buildings, along with NGOs, academic institutions and government agencies. Ecobuild is the worlds biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment and the UKs largest construction event. The stand-out feature of the UK- GBCs presence was their Big Tent. Created using SmartPly OSB, sessions held in the Big Tent highlighted what is current and new in the sustainable built environment, and was the only seminar area on the Ecobuild exhibition floor. The criteria for the UK-GBCs stand materials and the Big Tent theatre was simple; they had to be as sustainable as possible. The stand itself has been reused, added to and built upon six times, making it a highly sustainable and effective showcase of some of the certified panel products which can be chosen with confidence over non-FSC material. Coillte Panel Products leading MDF brand Medite provided UK-GBCs stand builders Dacapo with Medite Ecologique MDF which has zero added formaldehyde and is FSC certified. SmartPly OSB3

was also supplied; a sustainable and structural wood-based panel product which is also FSC certified and has zero added formaldehyde. Used extensively by the UKTI for exhibition counter units, benches, signage construction, and to create a meeting space which featured branding for the campaign lead by the message Green is Great Britain, SmartPly OSB is also being increasingly specified and used with its raw surface exposed, offering a more rugged, natural design solution. The UK-GBC and the UKTI credited their use of Medite Ecologique MDF and SmartPly OSB on product information towers, and through the stand designers discussions with visitors throughout the duration of the show on the specification and use of the selected materials. With their own stand at Ecobuild, Coillte Panel Products featured the innovation and sustainability which is at the heart of Coillte Panel Products development and showcased its full range of wood-based panel products, from Medite Ecologique and Ultralite, to pre-coated site hoarding and security product SmartPly SiteProtect. An aquarium built into the exhibition stand contained fish shapes created out of new Extreme Durable MDF Medite Tricoya, demonstrating in real time its durability and dimensional stability, even in water. Branding across the stand highlighted the companys long-term FSC credentials, its unique security of supply as Coillte owns the FSC certified forests and trees used to make their products, and that CARB2, one of the most stringent airborne toxic control regulations, is provided as standard across all their products. Yorkon Completes 50th Modular Petrol Filling Station Kiosk For Tesco And

Achieves A Rating For Energy EfficiencyOff-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has completed another milestone for Tesco its 50th modular petrol filling station (PFS) building for the global retailer. Since Yorkon completed its first petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco near Gretna Green in Scotland, the modular design has been engineered to accommodate larger chillers, a toilet with disabled access, and continuous glazing to maximise views from the till positions across the forecourt. Yorkons 50th petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco was located at Leigh in the North West and was completed as part of a major new store development. The project was also the first application of Tescos latest kiosk design and successfully achieved an EPC energy efficiency rating of A. New developments to the store design include reduced column sizes to improve visibility of the petrol pumps, disabled access, different configurations of shelving and partitions, and energy efficient lighting and refrigeration. The modular building at Leigh was craned into position in just one day. All plumbing, electrics, partitions, sanitary ware, counter, tobacco gantry, flooring and kitchen were pre-installed off site at the Yorkon production centre in York, reducing time on site to just four days. Other recent petrol filling station projects undertaken by Yorkon for Tesco include Northcott in Northern Ireland, Ystradgynlais in South Wales and in Devon, Humberside, Cheshire, the Midlands, Cleveland and Falkirk in Scotland. Commenting on the project at Leigh, Richard Jackson, Tesco PFS Operations Manager for the UK and Ireland, said, The Leigh PFS is a good example of just what can be achieved with off-site construction. It looks fantastic and the team there are really proud of their new facility. It is a first class petrol filling station bright modern and functional, helping to reaffirm our position as a world class fuel retailer. Simon Ambler, Director of Yorkon added, We are delighted to have completed our 50th PFS project for Tesco. This partnership is the result of a long-term commitment and a process of continuous development on the part of both organisations, ensuring Tesco and its customers receive the very highest standards of quality, service and value every time. Petrol filling stations are highly constrained sites that require specialist ground works for the forecourt. By using an off-site solution for the building, work on site is reduced and there is much less disruption. Tesco is the largest independent fuel retailer in the UK, serving over 4.5 million motorists every week. Leigh PFS is the 459th Tesco petrol filling station. Tesco PFS kiosks offer a range of convenience products at supermarket prices to help cut the cost of recharging fuel levels on a journey. Yorkon is the UKs market leader in offsite construction solutions for the retail sector, and has worked with Tesco for over a decade. It has delivered more than 220 modular building projects for the food retailer from convenience and petrol filling station stores to award-winning 10,000sqft interim supermarkets and a 28,000sqft eco-store. Yorkon is part of the Portakabin Group. www.yorkon.infoEnquiry No. 18 www.at-b.co.uk/card

New Clinic Opens In East Yorkshire Constructed Using A Highly Sustainable

Recycled Modular BuildingA new health centre has opened in the East Riding of Yorkshire, constructed using a highly sustainable recycled modular building from Foremans Relocatable Building Systems. Designed by architects Gelder and Kitchen, the new purpose-designed centre was craned into position in just eight hours over a weekend. The single storey building has been clad in brickwork to complement its location in the historic village of Cottingham a conservation area. Since closure of the clinic following the major floods in 2007, health services have been temporarily provided at other locations in the area. The new centre has brought a range of community services under one roof again, including podiatry; consultation, examination and treatment facilities; hearing aid services; child health clinics, and community dental services. Commenting on the project, Stephen Dale, Capital Projects Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust, said This is a fantastic building, delivered on time, cost and quality. Foremans performance was

excellent throughout and the construction and fitting out phases went very smoothly. We had a good relationship with their team, who were happy to go the extra mile to meet our specific requirements. Speed of delivery was important to enable us to re-provide clinical services locally as quickly as possible. The use of a recycled building structure also made our budgets go further, providing excellent value, as well as having a number of strong environmental benefits. Henry Chadwick, Partner at architects, Gelder and Kitchen, added, We are impressed with the finish and the space the modular approach has created internally. It is spacious and open. You would never know this was a modular building or indeed a recycled building. The installation was very professional and efficient and the finished scheme sits well in its landscape. This is a really good building, successfully delivered to a tight budget. All Foremans recycled modular buildings are fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, M&E services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high quality accommodation for a wide variety of permanent and interim applications.

The recycling and refurbishment of relocatable buildings is also highly sustainable, helping to improve a buildings carbon footprint: The approach produces less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions compared to a newly manufactured building (source: MPBA). Because much of the refurbishment work takes place off site, the approach generates fewer vehicle movements to site than traditional building methods, reducing congestion and carbon emissions. By refurbishing the building modules and preserving the embodied energy of the steel structure, Foremans is extending the life of the building and minimising the volume of waste sent to landfill. www.foremansbuildings.infoEnquiry No. 19 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Wicona Glazing Systems Specified For New Polar Research Station In Antarctica

A new Indian research station in the Antarctic is to feature high performance aluminium glazing systems from Wicona, which will have to withstand some of the most extreme conditions on earth. Designed by Hamburg-based architects, bof Architekten, the research station Bharati will be sited on the Antarctic coast, having been transported from Germany via South Africa by ship as a series of prefabricated modules. The stations aluminium faade will be subjected to the severe climatic conditions of the South Pole, which include abnormally high thermal and mechanical loads caused by blizzards, huge quantities of snow, high wind speeds and temperatures of -40 and below. A large proportion of the buildings faade will be glazed using Wiconas specially adapted WICTEC 50 curtain walling system. This will feature triple glazing, highly insulated panels, an incline of up to 15 at the two narrow ends, and will achieve a U value of 0.8 W/m2K. The system also had

to allow for the assembly and disassembly of the faade for testing purposes in Germany before the final installation in the Antarctic. By incorporating a high level of glazing into the stations design, the 25 staff working there will have a magnificent view of their polar location and it will counter their sense of confinement. 15 scientists and logistics staff will live and work in the station all year round. Bharati is Indias third research base in Antarctica. It will be a two-storey structure, raised on stilts and is designed to have a life span of 25 years, as well as to minimise any impact on the environment. It will use combined heat and power from renewable sources for heating, low sulphur fossil fuel, efficient treatment of effluent, and all hazardous and sanitary waste will be transported back to the mainland for disposal. The research station will weigh around 1,000 tonnes and comprises 134 prefabricated modules which have now been transported by ship from Antwerp

to Cape Town. In South Africa, a further 50 modules that make up the construction camp were taken on board for the 5,200km journey by sea to the site in the Larsemann Hills on the northern edge of the Antarctic. The scheme is scheduled for completion later this year. The team based at Bharati will carry out cutting edge multi-disciplinary research and observation studies, including the movement of platonic plates, microbes surviving in the atmosphere and meteorological sciences. Wicona offers a range of technically advanced glazing systems for complex and bespoke aluminium faades. Its products include unitised and stick curtain walling, structural and roof glazing, highly insulated window systems and heavy duty doors. www.wicona.co.ukEnquiry No. 21 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Technals New Low Rise Faade System Used For Inspirational Special School

In Hampshire

One of the first applications of the latest aluminium glazing system from Technal is a visionary new primary school in Hampshire for children with learning difficulties. The revolutionary MODAL low rise faade system was specified for Forest Park School near Southampton. Designed by Hampshire County Councils in-house architects and constructed by Morgan Sindall in a 8.9m contract, the new building has created an inspirational, child-centred facility which is set to transform special school provision in Hampshire. The school is a collection of low rise buildings interlinked by a series of canopies and arranged around a number of courtyards. The outer walls are constructed of brick with inner faades of dark timber and glass, and a combination of dual and mono-pitched zinc roofs. The sites landscaping was inspired by the heathland that characterises much of the New Forest National Park. Glazing fabricator Solaglas installed Technals MODAL low rise faade system extensively throughout. Finished in dark brown with contrasting bronze doors, MODAL is used as fixed light glazing and

with FXi65 windows. Sound attenuated louvres provide additional natural ventilation, and the GXi sliding patio door, which is fully integrated with MODAL, was also specified, together with Technals CD commercial door. MODAL is a rapid-build low rise faade system and the first in the UK to offer integral opening vents. It has an innovative modular design, which gives specifiers a much wider choice of configuration options. Nicky Dando, Head Teacher at Forest Park School said, We are delighted with all aspects of the new building, including the glazing. All visitors have commented on how light and airy the building feels. Commenting on the specification of MODAL, the project architect at Hampshire County Council said, One of the key design objectives for this project was to maximise natural light and views out onto the landscaped areas, helping us to extend the building into the external play spaces. This is a sustainable building so we also needed to provide a good level of natural ventilation. The MODAL system could incorporate both louvres for passive ventilation and integrated windows.

He added, We are very pleased with the finished building which is performing to a high standard and has been very well received by the children, staff and parents. Aquatiere Has The Soft TouchThe Aquatiere No Scale saltless water softener is steadily making its mark amongst architects and specifiers. Recently installed at the National Railway Museum and on North Sea Oil Rigs, the innovative softener is proving invaluable where avoiding the need for the provision of salt and ongoing maintenance is an effective method to reduce costs. A conventional salt based softener can waste up to 180,000 litres of water over a few years. The Aquatiere No Scale softener uses Template Assisted Crysalisation to change the limescale in the water to microcopic crystals of magnesium and calcium which in there natural seperated state, do not form hard scale. The unit is simply fitted onto the incoming water main and requires no power, no drain and no seperate drinking water tap. www.aquatiere.co.ukEnquiry No. 23 www.at-b.co.uk/card

The new NIBE AMB 30 allows you to combine ground source and air source for a truly hybrid operation. The AMB 30 is an air collector accessory that you can use with the new NIBE F1345 ground source heat pump. The AMB 30 is a heat absorbing air source module that exploits the outdoor air, which means that neither boreholes nor ground source coils are required in as large quantities. It is also possible to combine several AMB 30s to achieve the desired output size. Each NIBE F1345 ground source heat pump contains two large scroll compressors and the intelligent control system ensures that these are employed to best effect in all circumstances, optimising efficiency and minimising wear. The new NIBE F1345 heat pumps energy can be provided via boreholes, ground collectors or even lake water, all of which have a remarkably even temperature throughout the year regardless of surface conditions. Despite the power generated by the heat pump, noise levels during operation are extremely low allowing great flexibility in positioning the elegantly slim unit measuring 1800 x 600mm with a depth of 620mm. NIBEs new heat pump has great power potential and flexibility for this is matched by truly excellent energy efficiency. With a COP rating well over 4, up to 10% better than earlier models, great fuel savings are possible and payback time can be sharply reduced. www.nibe.co.ukEnquiry No. 28 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Renewing The DuPont Corian ExperienceA refined and enhanced colour palette for DuPont Corian high-tech surface: an exclusive resource for timeless sophistication and superior versatility in design Since its pioneering invention, an evolving and original colour palette has been a dynamic theme in the story of DuPont Corian high-tech surface. Now this carefully researched offering has been once again significantly refined, as part of the inspired re-thinking that keeps DuPont Corian at the leading edge of surface design. The refreshed and re-ordered palette includes captivating new tones developed for a wide variety of architectural and design projects, residential and commercial, interior and exterior. This evolution is complemented by an innovative and user-friendly mix of marketing tools designed to facilitate the selection of the most appropriate tone of DuPont Corian for specific applications, either standing alone or in combination with many other materials. Todays forward-looking design industry demands both style and performance that will stand the test of time and the inherent strength yet suppleness of DuPont Corian makes it superbly well suited to receiving the most elegant of hues, created to endure, as much in aesthetics as in functionality. Whether in achieving the freshest whites, the deepest darks, the boldest brights or the most intriguing grain and vein effects, the high-quality homogeneity and seamless versatility of DuPont Corian has allowed it to outstrip other materials in the purity, consistency and extensive range of colours and tonal textures it can offer. To make consideration and selection from the palette even easier, the spectrum of choices for DuPont Corian high-tech surface has been classified into clear groupings of solid, translucent and textured hues, while the sample size has been adapted to maximise both convenience and the ability to appreciate the nuance of each tone. In a further refinement, the sophisticated solid colours of DuPont Corian have been chromatically grouped into whites; greys and blacks; blues; greens; reds and yellows; purples and browns and these are now presented in their own dedicated booklet and sample box. Several unique, useful and inspiring new shades have been thoughtfully developed to enhance this collection of pure tones, intended to be of durable and versatile service to the world of architecture and design.

Colours making their debut within the palette in 2012 include: five new solid greys ranging from the subtlety of Private Gray to the saturation of Deep Gray; four fresh blues such as Ethereal and Diamond; three variously nuanced greens from Ecru to Blooming; further neutral beige and brown options; plus the velvety richness of Royal Red, Imperial Yellow and Chic Aubergine. The textured hues of DuPont Corian have also been reclassified and enriched. Whether as finely grained, fascinatingly veined or presenting a fuller matrix of particles, these dependable choices work beautifully across a wide horizon of design schemes from residential to commercial environments. Equally easy to live with as to harmonise within a creative vision, these modern and perennially popular colours also embody the traditional reliability for which DuPont Corian is renowned. New choices such as Juniper, Arrowroot and Burled Beech have been added along this scale of textured colours from light to dark, neutral to strong, cool to warm. The entire architecture of the palette remains available for full reference and research, both in a complete sample box and in easily accessed literature and selection tools, printed and digital. Those colours most suited to external faade applications are also clearly identified. However, should architects find that they require a unique colour to meet the specific requirements of a large scale project or brand identity, in any application or location, custom colours are also possible with DuPont Corian high-tech surface.

As much as DuPont Corian offers beauty and inspiration, it is above all a wisely functional surface that sustains its fitness for purpose. Resistant to damage but repairable and reusable, it can conduct water without any danger of warping, be exposed to time and the elements without fading, return to spotlessness with simple maintenance and offer seamless purity to hygienecritical environments. Workable to an unrestrained variety of shapes, it welcomes pattern and decoration or subtlety and minimalism, while the silky smoothness of its flawless finish actively invites touch and interaction. Compatible with modern technology, fixing systems and many other materials, especially those with architectural nobility, DuPont Corian high-tech surface can either dramatically set the scene or graciously support it. The refined colour palette of DuPont Corian, first presented at the Milan week of design in April, will be commercially available as of June 1st 2012 in Europe, Middle East and Africa. New Aico Firecap Air Valves Combine Ventilation With Fire SafetyAico is pleased to announce a new addition to its Firecap range of intumescent fire safety products in the form of Fire Rated Air Valves. The valves are designed to allow air flow from ventilation systems whilst at the same time providing an effective 60 minute fire barrier. When a hole is made in a ceiling to install an air valve, it compromises the fire safety rating of that ceiling. The hole must be fire stopped in accordance with Building Regulations Document B. Aico's new Firecap Fire Rated Air Valves are manufactured with a built in non toxic intumescent material that expands in the event of a fire to create an effective barrier against smoke and flames for up to 60 minutes. They have been rigorously tested by independent laboratories to BS476. Available in 100mm and 125mm diameters, Firecap Fire Rated Air Valves perform to the same level as normal air valves in terms of air flow, and are fitted in the same manner without any need for adhesive material or special fixings. They can also be readily retrofitted in place of existing valves. www.aico.co.ukEnquiry No. 38 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Cantifix Colour-Changing Glass Perfect For Internal ScreensLeading architectural glazing company Cantifix has been engineering innovative solutions and championing products which improve quality of life for over 26 years. Brand design consultants Springetts approached Cantifix looking for a glass based solution for their reception area. The brief was to screen off the office area beyond without losing light, and without masking the feeling of activity in the office. A simple sandblasted glass screen was the perfect solution; but the clients wanted something more exciting and dynamic to match their personality. Cantifix came up with a colourful, innovative and experimental design - incorporating a sandblasted single glazed unit and colour phasing ribbon LEDs. The LED strips are fitted all the way around the internal edge of the frame, and when illuminated, the sandblasted surface of the glass causes the coloured light to diffuse in all directions creating the illusion of coloured glass. The LEDs phase through a wide range of vibrant colours, creating a gentle but energising glow. The completed installation gives privacy to the office area without compromising natural light, and provides a warm, colourful welcome to the reception area. www.cantifix.co.ukEnquiry No. 41 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Timbmets Oak TEC Sandwich Panels Provide Cost And Energy Efficient DoorsTimbmet has combined forces with joinery company Meer End Stairs, to produce 130 bespoke internal and external doors for a prestigious new build property in Warwickshire. The house owner specified Oak as his preferred material of choice for the doors. Warwick Aldersley, MD of Meer End Stairs, suggested TEC (Timbmet Engineered Components) Oak sandwich panels as a solution in order to minimise the inherent movement that the use of Oak would cause over time. Available in easily machinable sheets with a cork core, the Oak TEC sandwich panels combine cost efficiency with low wastage, and provide a flawless product with added dimensional stability far greater than that of traditional solid wood. In addition, when used in the external solid doors, the TEC panels meant the doors were perfectly able to meet demanding new EU U-value regulations. www.timbmet.comEnquiry No. 48 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Technically, DuPont AirGuard Smart demonstrates excellent performance: the vapour resistance is always below 5 MNs/g if the insulation is very wet, regardless of ambient air relative humidity. The construction and insulation can dry out to the inside, as well as to the outside via the Tyvek breather membrane. Very high relative ambient air humidity should additionally be reduced through ventilation and extraction. DuPont AirGuard Smart acts as a typical vapour control layer if the insulation is very dry: It provides a vapour control effect with a high vapour resistance. Diffusion occurs via the external breather membrane, thus the construction and insulation can dry out to the outside. These features make it an ideal solution for energy saving requirements and contribute to cost reductions related to heating or cooling. In the summer, when the ambient air relative humidity is high (>50%), the outside temperature is higher than inside so the water vapour resistance of DuPont AirGuard Smart is low and water vapour can, if necessary, migrate to the inside, so that the insulation and construction can dry out. While in the winter, the ambient air relative humidity is much lower with an outside temperature lower than inside. In this case, DuPont AirGuard Smart water vapour resistance is high and helps block water vapour diffusion, so that less humidity can ingress to the insulation and construction. Its A Wrap For Roof-Pro At Reading University Film CentreRoof-Pros free standing support system has been used to support the rooftop services at the University of Readings new state of the art Film, Theatre and TV Department. The system has enabled the roof-mounted services to be installed on the building without penetrating the roof buildup with upstands or steelwork. Consulting Engineers, DSSR, specified the system to support six roof-mounted air handling units (AHU) and a chiller, each weighing 1,500-3,300kg. The double-stacked AHUs also required high level access platforms to enable the site services team to reach the upper fan sections for on-going maintenance. Roof-Pros solution included the design of pipe and cabletray supports with a high-level pipe corridor running the length of the main AHU plant area, giving unimpeded access to the tight plant area for maintenance teams. At all stages, Roof-Pros technical team worked with the designers and installation team, providing on-site support to overcome the challenges of the project. In addition, Roof-Pros Technical Surveyor surveyed the plant area and requirements for the AHU access platforms once all the main services had been installed. www.roof-pro.co.ukEnquiry No. 51 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Walking Safely Above LondonSE Controls Takes The Heat Out Of New London Apartment DevelopmentSafety and comfort are at the heart of a major new residential development by Linden Homes in Hammersmith, London, which is using a combined smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls to protect residents in the multi-storey apartment building. SE Controls developed the smoke ventilation system to remove smoke from corridors and stairwells by using a mix of natural air buoyancy venting and fan extraction through smoke shafts. On floor one to five, smoke ventilation is provided by extract fans located in the buildings cycle store, with replacement air being supplied through ground floor and air inlet shaft, while the sixth floor is vented by a 1.5m2 vent in the top floor corridor and stairs by a similar arrangement at the head of the stair. The SE Controls solution is also designed to provide mechanically assisted natural ventilation to help maintain a comfortable temperature within the buildings corridors. On the first five floors, extract fans, which run at half speed, remove warm air from the corridors and the systems smoke dampers are opened as required by the buildings natural ventilation control panel. On the sixth floor, a dedicated tamper proof thermostat controls the lobby vent while hooded vents allow ventilation during inclement weather conditions. The integrated smoke and natural ventilation control strategy involved the use of nine OS2 controllers and tamper proof manual control points, as well as a range of temperature sensors and smoke sensors, all of which are linked to the main system control panel with a failsafe battery back up. Under normal operation, the natural ventilation (NV) system is active between 08:00 and 20:00, which provides ventilation and corridor cooling to the building. The NV controller scans the temperature sensors and allows the end of corridor Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs) to open when required. However, in the event of a fire, where the system is triggered either by a smoke sensor or manually activated, all NV functions are stopped and the OS2 controller for the affected zone signals the fans to run at full speed. www.secontrols.comEnquiry No. 52 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Bona Traffic Anti-Slip lacquer has been used to finish and protect the new wooden floors in the two aerial walkways on Tower Bridge. The finish was specified by a City of London Building Surveyor, who was looking for a highly durable finish with anti-slip properties. She explained I specified Bona Traffic Anti-Slip as events are held on both walkways and I was concerned that drink/food spillage on the Oak floor could cause someone to slip. Stewart Taylor of the flooring contractors, Bailey & Taylor, had already recommended we use a Bona varnish and, after doing my own research, it seemed that Traffic Anti-Slip was just what we required. The walkways are used by the public in high numbers and the high durability offered by Traffic again made it ideal for this type of use. We also wanted a natural look and we were reassured that we would achieve this using Traffic. The City of London is committed to using environmentally friendly materials and Bonas green credentials confirmed our choice. The walkways had been carpeted until this year a decision was made by the Surveyors to find a floorcovering which would give a long term saving and would look more stylish. The walkways are now used as a venue for sophisticated corporate events and wedding receptions. Bailey and Taylor sourced character grade English Oak

planks and recommended using a lacquer from Bonas range to deliver the required look and performance. The carpet and plywood beneath was removed to reveal rubber studded tiles which, as part of the fabric of the Tower, have to be retained. New battens, insulation board and plywood were installed and the Oak planks were then secret nailed into place with the perimeter boards being stuck down with Bonas silane based adhesive, R850. The new boards were then sanded to a 120 grit finish and one coat of Bonas Prime Classic applied. Prime Classic helps give a wooden surface a well-bodied appearance and also reduces the risk of sidebonding due to its flexibility. Finally, three coats of Traffic Anti Slip were applied according to the specification. A two component, waterborne 100% polyurethane finish, Traffic Anti Slip delivers a highly durable surface in addition to anti-slip properties conforming to DIN standard 51130 R10. All versions of Bona Traffic (Matt, Silkmatt and Anti Slip) offer the most durable finish of all Bonas lacquers and are therefore recommended for areas such as the bridge walkways where extreme resistance to wear is required. Traffic Anti Slip is supplied in a matt finish with a reflective value of just 25% which means the floor maintains a natural look even after the lacquer has been applied. A total of 480m of oak flooring was fitted in the two walkways and the job was finished four days ahead of schedule. www.bona.comEnquiry No. 53 www.at-b.co.uk/card

Howe Green access panels have been installed in the newly re-opened Cutty Sark visitor attraction. The worlds last surviving tea clipper was officially re-opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 25th April at its home in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, having undergone extensive works that required almost every inch of the 143-year old vessel to be conserved. Over fifty 7500 Series aluminium access covers with bespoke Z-section supports were made to order by Howe Green, the industrys leading manufacturer of metal floor, ceiling and wall access covers. Ellmer Construction installed single and multipart units under a unique glass canopy designed to allow people to walk underneath Cutty Sark itself and view the elegant lines of her hull. The space and opportunity for the construction arose following an incredible feat of engineering, which saw Cutty Sark raised by 11 feet onto steel supports in order to relieve the keel of the weight of the ship and help preserve her unique shape. Howe Greens 7500 Series aluminium access panels were fitted into raised access flooring within the new museum facility in order to provide a route to essential ventilation ducting needed to keep air circulating in what is effectively a large void under the historic clipper. Designed for use with all types of hard floors, Howe Green 7500 Series aluminium panels sit 100% flush so as not create a trip hazard and offer proven reliability to withstand high levels of foot traffic. They are double sealed to ensure no water ingress or dirt trapping and provide a reliable and maintenance-free solution to accessing essential building services - ideal for what looks set to become one of the Capitals most popular tourist attractions.
