Energy

The growing global demand for energy calls for new solutions, prioritizing those

that use clean and renewable sources. Abengoa develops infrastructure projects

that convert energy from renewable sources into electricity and biofuels, as well as

constructing the transmission lines that make up our electricity networks.

Environment

The growth of the population, improved living conditions in developing countries

and climate change are going to lead to significant changes in demand for natural

resources. Aware of this trend, Abengoa produces drinking water from sea water

and waste water.

ABENGOA ABENGOA ABENGOA

Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB) applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, generating electricity from renewable resources, converting biomass into biofuels and producing drinking water from sea water.

Innovative technology solutions for sustainability

Abengoa executes its engineering, infrastructure concessions and industrial production activities in both the energy and environmental sectors:

Engineering and construction

Engineering and construction include our traditional engineering activities in the energy and water sectors, with more than 70 years of experience in the market. We specialize in carrying out complex turn-key projects for concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, solar-gas hybrid plants, conventional generation plants, biofuels plants and water infrastructures, as well as large-scale desalination plants and transmission lines, among others.

Concession-type infrastructures

We have an extensive portfolio of proprietary concession assets that generate

revenues that are governed by long term sales agreements such as take-or-pay

contracts, tariff contracts or power purchase agreements (PPAs). This activity

includes the operation of electric (solar, cogeneration or wind) energy generation

plants and transmission lines. These assets generate no demand risk and we focus

on operating them as efficiently as possible.

Industrial Production

This covers our businesses with a high technological component, such as biofuels, industrial waste recycling or the development of solar technology. The company holds an important leadership position in these activities in the geographical markets in which it operates.

The internationalization of Abengoa is strengthening our commitment to offering innovative solutions for sustainability with a local perspective, integrated in a global outlook.

Abengoa is committed to internationalization as a key aspect of its strategic plan. With a presence on five continents, our strategy is based on the following points:

To become an international leader for promoting, constructing and operating innovative solutions for sustainable development.

To provide customized solutions for all the sectors in which we operate. To guarantee efficient and responsible distribution and sales of our

technologies and products around the world. To become a leader in technologies such as second-generation biofuels or

solar-thermal plants in order to supply a sustainable energy alternative to the planet.

Innovative technology solutions for sustainability

The new project of Abengoa with 110 MW will be located in the Atacama Desert. This area receives one the highest levels of solar radiation worldwide, offering solar power to generate electricity and store thermal energy at the same time.

Atacama-1 will generate electricity 24 hours a day, becoming the first nonconventional renewable energy serving as base load for the grid.

Atacama-1

Datos

Location: Comuna de María Elena, Region of Antofagasta, Chile. Capacity: 110 MW. Technology: molten salt tower with 18 hours of thermal storage. Solar field: 700 ha, 10.600 heliostats. Continuous production 24 hours per day, a key aspect in a region where

consumption is linked to the mining industry.

Tons of CO2 prevented from entering into the atmosphere: 643,000 t..

Molten Salt Tower Technology

Atacama-1 has a 700 hectares solar field with 10,600 heliostats (a set of mirrors on a flat structure), each of them with 140 sq. meters of reflective surface. Heliostats track the sun concentrating solar power at the receiver, placed at 220 meters in a tower of 250 meters height. The heat concentrated at this point is transferred to molten salt that will create steam, used to drive 110 MW turbine that generates electricity the 24 hours of the day.

Thermal Storage System

Offering continuous operation 24 hours a day has been possible by means of a pioneering thermal storage system developed by Abengoa. The storage system enables energy production for 18 hours at full capacity. This capacity gives the installation a high level of dispatchability, adapting production to the needs of the grid.

Benefits

The plant will prevent emission of 643,000 tons of CO2 annually. This project will be integrated in the Chilean national program for renewable energy development, whose goal is creating a clean energy future for Chile. This country aims to have 20 % of electricity generated from clean energies, boosting socioeconomic development and energy autonomy by means of an energy source such as the sun that offers a long-term fixed price.

Construction, operation and maintenance of the plant will trigger regional and national socioeconomic development. The construction of this plant will create an average of 700 direct jobs, peaking at 2,000 workers approximately. One the project is in commercial operation, some 50 long term job positions will be created.

Similarly, the development, implementation and operation of the plant will create a large number of indirect jobs as well as a network of services and new industrial investments for the development of the local market of key components for this technology, promoting the economic growth in the country.
