Every year, designers look forward to the release of color trends. These trends have huge influences on everything from paint colors to furniture fabrics to home décor

items like picture frames and vases. 2016 trends are mirroring what we saw in 2015. Teri Moger, designer at Hirshfields

in Rochester, Minn., notes 2015 was full of monochromatic color schemes, lots of whites and grays. Everything was very simple and flowing, she says. “There was not a lot of transition with color throughout the house…pretty simple colors, that was our 2015.”She foresees 2016 being very similar. “I think we’re still going to see the pretty basic color scheme with some bold accents,” she predicts. Paint companies have already released their 2016 color trend palettes, and it’s clear to see: light, simple colors reign supreme for another year.

Sherwin Williams 2016 color of the year is Alabaster, a white with an “oasis of calm simplicity.” Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin Williams, says Alabaster is “’neither stark nor overly warm but rather an understated and alluring white.”

Benjamin Moore has also released their color of the year for 2016. Simply White is a “crisp, clean, multipurpose white,” according to its description.

Why all the emphasis on white and light

neutrals again this year?Andrea Mango, manager of Benjamin Moore’s Color Design Studio, says “White is a perfect way to define a space in a really

beautiful and sophisticated way.” By keeping wall colors simple, you can define your own space in your own terms. If you’re wondering where all the bold colors are, don’t worry, they’re still around. Moger says that brightly painted walls aren’t mainstream, but there are ways to bring in colors that coordinate with your whites. Things such as lamps, mattings in picture frames, throw pillows and bedding are great ways to bring in other trending colors, such as Benjamin Moore’s Blue Echo or Royal Flush which also debuted on their 2016 Color Trends palette.

Overall, the trends maintain warm, earthy undertones.

Just because you like a color trend doesn’t mean you should immediately jump on the bandwagon. Moger cautions that “the most important thing when you’re doing your home is to make sure it flows with your style and what the style of your house is, not necessarily what the trends are.”

Thankfully, with trends as versatile as Alabaster and Simply White, you can feel good about the potential to fit them into your home if you choose.

WHITES AND GRAYS REMAIN HOT FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR

by ALLISON ROE

Pantone has released their well-respected Color of the Year for 2016 and, in a surprise move, has named not one, but two colors.

Rose Quartz and Serenity are the two Colors of the Year this year. Rose Quartz is a lovely soft pink tone, while Serenity is a powdery blue.

“Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute.

These two soft colors are a vast departure from the bold colors chosen over the past years. 2006 was the last time a softer color was chosen; choices since then have included Blue Iris, Turquoise, Tangerine Tango, Emerald and last year’s popular hit Marsala.

Minimalist Nordic design is taking over the home decor scene in 2016.

Scandinavian-inspired design principles feature white, simple color schemes and use natural materials, providing attractive options for creating a balanced, beautiful home.

The Nordic movement, which evokes the simple, minimalist homes of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland, is enjoying new popularity as Americans seek to balance work life with home life and create spaces where they can unplug, unwind and relax. Nearly 77 percent of homeowners reported neutral tones, such as those embraced by Nordic design, make a room feel more tranquil, according to a recent Sherwin-Williams National Home Design and Color survey.

Here are some tips to steer your space clear of clutter and embrace the minimalist beauty of Nordic decor for a balanced

and bright 2016.

Start with a clean slate Selecting the right hue of

white paint on your walls can create the foundation for Nordic design. Take a cue from colors inspired by natural, fine-textured stone. For example, Alabaster, Sherwin-Williams 2016 Color of the Year, is a natural, flattering white suited especially for a harmonious atmosphere in bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens.

Turn on the lightAs in Nordic countries, the

winter season’s long, dark months create a craving for daylight and its positive effect on mood. During these months, take advantage of the daylight you do have by letting window light shine in through a sheer curtain for an ethereal effect in your space.

When the sun goes down, create the effects of daylight in your home decor. Incorporate shiny and reflective elements, like a large beautiful mirror

hung on the wall, to reflect your interior lighting and give the illusion of a more spacious and brighter atmosphere.

use shiny metallic elements such as copper in a living room lamp or for pendant lighting in a white kitchen. Hang paper lanterns in a bedroom to add movement and lighten up the space in a fun and interesting way.

Embrace natural tones Nordic design is all about

using natural, live-well tones to create environments where we can feel serene. To achieve this look and feel, use earthy, natural materials, such as Carrera marble, to bring an element of sophistication to a countertop in a kitchen or bath.

Choose birch or maple wood grains for cabinets and furniture to add balance to lovely light stone grays and blush petal pinks, and create a refreshing, yet uncomplicated atmosphere.

10 AT HOME JANUARY 2016

So you’ve decided to move to a new home, a place you can call your own. Some first-time buyers take this decision literally: They want a newly constructed home, where they choose everything from the light fixtures down to the flooring.New construction is often more expensive than comparable existing homes, says Steve Melman, director of economic services at the National Association of Home Builders. That’s a key reason why first-time purchasers – who don’t have cash from the sale of their former home – made up just 13 percent of new-construction buyers between 2007 and 2009, the latest period the NAHB has tracked, Melman adds. But now, many homebuilders are targeting first-time buyers with features like the chance to customize parts of the home, says Tim Costello, president of Builder Homesite Inc., an Austin, Texas-based group. Here is a look at how builders are hoping to lure first-timers, as well as some ways the purchasing process for new homes differs from buying existing homes.

ECO- AND BUDGET-FRIENDLYBHI research shows that buyers choose new construction because they want energy-efficient homes.“In new homes, EnergyStar is standard,” says Patricia Hanchette, division president for homebuilder Lennar Corp.EnergyStar is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s label for home materials and systems. They are constantly improving standards so new homes can offer significantly lower utility bills than homes built even just ten years ago, explains Paul Foresman of Design Basics, a Nebraska-based firm that advises home builders.Ask about utility costs and put that figure into your comparisons between new and existing homes, he says.Indeed, a study from the NAHB found that operating costs as a fraction of a home’s value increase the older the home is. These costs – including utilities, maintenance, property taxes and insurance – account for 5 percent of a home’s value for structures built before 1960 to just under 3 percent for homes built after 2008. Another NAHB survey revealed

that EnergyStar certifications are a priority for homebuyers; 84 percent of millennials say they are willing to pay 2 to 3 percent more for an energy-efficient home as long as they can see a return on their power bills.FINANCING CHALLENGESince the financial crisis a few years ago, getting a mortgage on any home has become more difficult, with lenders scrutinizing a borrower’s credit worthiness and financial standing, in addition to the value of the home.“Work with a mortgage consultant before you sign a contract [with a builder],” says Ron Sozio, vice president, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. Buyers will want to ensure they get a loan before putting up a deposit and working with the builder, he explains.Lenders have unique concerns with new construction, adds Neil Caron, vice president of Freedom Mortgage Corp. in Connecticut. For instance, before a buyer can get a government-insured FHA mortgage on a condominium in a new complex, the whole project must meet government approval. In many cases, builders team up with mortgage companies and there can be advantages for both buyers and builders from

the partnership, Sozio says. The lender can ensure that a project receives FHA approval, for example, or a buyer could receive guidance to lock in an interest rate on a loan to be issued several months later when the home is expected to be completed to avoid borrowing at what the rate may be then, Sozio adds.Still, “buyers are under no obligation to use the partnering lender,” he says.PATIENCE AND PROFITSIn the boom years, buyers often rushed to be the first to purchase in a subdivision to lock in what they considered low prices; the last units in a subdivision typically sell for more. But when the housing bubble burst, property values depreciated and the last, newly constructed units in the subdivision often sold for low prices that competed with home-sellers in the subdivision who were trying to move out.Home prices have been up in 2015, with the median price increasing 8.2% in the second quarter to $229,400. Subdivision homeowners may be able to breathe a bit easier knowing they may eventually sell their units for a profit without having to compete with low-priced new construction in the same subdivision.

FOR SOME BUYERS, ONLY A BRAND-NEW HOME WILL SUFFICE. BUT PURCHASING A NEW-CONSTRUCTION HOME CAN BRING ITS OWN SET OF CHALLENGES.

When only new will do

Kitchen renovations are having their moment not only in terms of updating for functionality but also

for the pure pleasure of the homeowner.

If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, here are the key areas to consider, according to homeowners who responded to a survey done by home appliance manufacturer, LG Electronics.

Aesthetic appealMore Americans are drawing

inspiration from showcase kitchens featured in home design shows, websites and magazines. They’re no longer content just looking; they want to create that stunning visual effect in their own kitchens. Twenty-six percent of those planning to renovate their kitchen say aesthetic appeal is the primary factor.

In changing their overall style, homeowners may consider modernizing their kitchens with distinctive styling palettes that include sleek, clean lines, unique knobs and handles, beautiful yet functional task lighting and leading-edge technology.

Better appliancesHomeowners see premium

appliances as essential to their kitchen upgrade and are willing to pay more to get the best. Nearly half (49 percent) say they would be willing to spend more on a top-of-the-line refrigerator and 44 percent felt the same way about ranges. In fact, nearly nine out of 10 (89 percent) say

they would pay top dollar for a premium appliance.

From convection ovens that distribute heat more evenly through relocation of the heating element from the bottom of the oven to the back to an energy-efficient refrigerator that features pro-style details and cabinet-depth styling, new top-of-the-line appliances are available from leading premium brands, such as LG Electronics’ high end kitchen line, LG Studio.

Countertops and cabinetsFunctionality is still important

to homeowners, with 40 percent citing that they would like their kitchen to be more functional, whether they plan to renovate or not. Specifically, homeowners wish their kitchen had more counter space (44 percent) and additional cabinets (37 percent).

From eco-friendly composite countertops made of recycled paper and engineered stone with enhanced durability to classic materials like natural granite and butcher block, homeowners have many options for countertops that look great and function beautifully. Traditional woods like oak, maple and cherry, and modern choices, such as stainless steel and bamboo, give homeowners virtually endless options in cabinet design.

In today’s world, homeowners are not only remodeling their kitchens for resale value but for the personal satisfaction of loving their kitchen.

What exactly makes for a charming home? unlike real estate agents who use the term to describe

anything that’s small and outdated, interior designers are generally earnest in their attempts to define what gives a home charm.

According to experts, it’s easier to assemble a showcase of charming homes than to describe what makes them so.“I sort of define charm by what it is not. Charm is not about impressing,” says Susan Sully, author of “Past Present: Living with Heirlooms and Antiques.”

“Houses with charm don’t say, ‘Look at me!’ They say, ‘Live in me.’ They’re inviting.” When she began scouting houses to feature in her book, Sully found that all manner of architecture and styles might qualify because charm is defined not by appearances but by “an unaffected spirit that puts people at ease.”Charm finds expression in houses old and new, and in interiors that are traditional or modern. A Greek Revival mansion and a modest cottage can both charm occupants because “charm is more of an attitude than an aesthetic,” Sully explains. “When a person is charming, you feel like you can let your guard down. A charming house does that. It puts you at ease.”

How is this sense of ease accomplished?

“It mostly depends on how well elements of the environment address

matters of practicality and function,” says Jane Schwab, co-author of “The Welcoming House: The Art of Living Graciously.” “A gracious or charming home tends to have obvious places for people to sit comfortably, obvious places to put down a drink, obvious places to read.”

Finishes and materials are selected with approachability and sensory engagement in mind. Even in a grand home, Schwab and co-author Cindy Smith like the look and feel of sisal rugs and use silks and velvets sparingly.

Touchable objects are a must. Mix textures so eyes and fingertips can light on “something soft, something sleek, something with a distinctive weave, and maybe just a bit of leather,” they suggest.

Also incorporate nuances and details that do not call attention to them but create an element of surprise when people come upon them, such as curtains with a scalloped hem.

Perhaps the richest sources of charm in a home are “the things that separate the house from anyone else’s – the artwork, the way they arrange flowers,” Smith says.

If a space lacks charm, “it is probably missing something that expresses personality,” Sully says. “On my mantelpiece I have a nest I picked up on a walk. I have things here and there that I love because they are beautiful and spark a memory. These aren’t things from a catalog.”

On the other hand, there are elements that inviting homes should

avoid. Clutter chokes the charm right out of a room, Schwab says. “It’s important to create negative space so that the eye has an opportunity to rest and appreciate what it’s going to see next.” She adds that special objects take on greater significance and charm “when they are fewer and far between.”An overhead fixture as the single source of light is another “charm killer,” she says. Have three levels of lighting – table lamps, floor lamps or sconces and overhead fixtures.

Schwab, Sully and Smith live and work in the South, but their definition of charm – as indefinable as it is – is shared by designers in other regions.

“To me, charming represents a combination of items, such as memories, beautiful collections and more, that create our own personal visual patina,” says Warren Sheets of Warren Sheets Design in San Francisco. “A charming space is warm and inviting with plenty of personal style.”

Don’t be fooled, though. Charm in the real estate world is wholly different from the world of design, decorating or remodeling. The word “charming” in real estate listings usually is a red flag signaling that a property is small, cramped and perhaps outdated. Studying Chicago listings, the authors of the bestselling book “Freakonomics” found that the term correlates with less desirability and lower sales prices.

How charming is that?

It’s easy to get swept away in the romance of a new home – those tall ceilings, that spacious backyard, all the great amenities that are nearby. Eager young buyers are especially vulnerable. The mindful first-

time homebuyer will keep an eye on the little practicalities that many first-timers ignore. Here are nine points to keep in mind before buying your first home.1. The home is designed to attract

you Sellers spruce up a house before putting

it on the market, staging it with attractive furniture and accessories, baking cookies and lighting candles to scent the rooms with a pleasant aroma. What seems like a nice detail could be covering up a problem, such as stinky plumbing or musty odors.

“Go back to the house at another time and request that there be no olfactory or auditory enhancements,” says Suzanne Whang, former host of HGTv’s “House Hunters” and author of “Suzanne Whang’s Guide to Happy Home Buying.”

2. Empty rooms only seem biggerDuring a walkthrough, think about your

own possessions and how they will fill the space. Ignore the furnishings that are there – or not there.

“If the house is empty, remember that furniture will make each room feel smaller,” Whang says.

3. Track the appliancesMake sure the contract honors the

appliances that will come with the house. And make sure it’s specific.“Do not just say ‘washer and dryer’,” says

Diana Brodman Summers, an attorney and author of “How to Buy Your First Home.” “Say ‘Maytag Model 800 washer and dryer.’ That way the seller cannot substitute an old washer and dryer for the one in place when the deal was made.”Brodman Summers advises doing a walk-through of the home the night before closing to ensure that all items in the contract are still there and in the same condition.

4. Face it: you’ll have to fix stuffNew homes rarely arrive in pristine

condition. Be sure to allot some of your budget for repairs, big and small. A pre-purchase home inspection will offer insight into what projects might need to be done.

5. The house will look

different throughout the dayvisit the house and surrounding

area at different times during the day and at night.

“You’ll want to experience the levels of sunlight and shade in all of the rooms,” says Whang, who suggests walking around the neighborhood at different times to see how safe you feel.

6. Gauge the neighbors’

happiness The best way to know if a

neighborhood lives up to the asking price of a property is to get a feel from the folks who live nearby. Chat up neighbors to see if they’re comfortable with the area and have had good experiences. It’s a good idea to meet people in the area or in your building; you’ll want to be sure you’ll be comfortable living next door to them.

7. Good schools come with a

priceHave kids? Want kids? A strong school district might influence a

purchasing decision but be aware that a good school means a higher price tag. What makes a school district “good?”

“A person may want to research the school district online,” suggests Brodman Summers. “See if it has

made the news; look at the demographics of the families in that area; look at school board meeting minutes and the graduation rate.”

8. Your monthly expenses may go upAccording to Brodman Summers, the

monthly mortgage cost on a home is often is higher than a new homeowner expects, due to insurance and taxes, which have the potential to increase. She suggests making a detailed budget and staying conscious of the fact that certain expenses will fluctuate.9. A little courtesy goes a long way

“If you really love a house, write a personal letter to the owners,” Whang says. “It could make the difference between your offer and a comparable dollar amount from another buyer.”

Whang notes that some sellers don’t want to sell a family home to buyers who will tear it down or make major renovations, so if your plan is to keep the integrity of the structure, let them know. A little bit of home loving can go a long way to making the best decision.

Pinterest is bursting with photos of ways to repurpose old things. From doors to windows, hooks to leather, there is no shortage of inspiration online. The problem is that sometimes those inspirational pieces are beyond your capabilities.

We’ve tackled a few projects using one of the year’s hottest trends: old windows. Check out these four different window projects for some pieces easy to tackle for the first-timer but are also easy to customize for the more seasoned repurposer.

There are many places to find old windows. For starters, you can begin at the Rochester Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Not only are you saving old pieces from the landfill, your purchase goes toward helping those in need in our own community. Other places to find windows include online resources such as Craigslist and many of the local garage sale pages on Facebook. As always, use caution when making an online transaction of any kind.

Here are four ways we repurposed our windows.

to use

OLD WINDOWS

For a quick project, don’t do any repurposing. Clean up your window, hang some picture hangers on the back and use it as decoration as-is. We love how such a simple project can make such a great statement.

Create a chicken wire picture or note holder. Carefully remove the glass panes and staple pieces of chicken wire to the back. Use tiny clothespins to attach photos, cards and more.

To make your window a little more personal, you can turn it into a

picture frame. Choose a favorite photo and have it printed at an

office store, such as Staples, as an engineer print. Note that the image

will be black and white, so make sure you’re okay losing color. Cut

the print to fit in your window. Then pin it to your wall and place your

window pane over top.

It’s easy to jazz up a window and turn it into a coat or scarf rack. Find

some fun handles (we got ours at Home Depot) and add them to your

window. Then hang and use.

Mid-century modern has been a popular style for some time and although America’s love affair with clean lines and simple shapes continues, there’s

another player jockeying for position in the living room. Antiques are making a comeback.“I think people are finally realizing that antiques possess a charm and a depth of character that mid-century modern will never have,” says Jennifer Boles, founder of popular blog The Peak of Chic and author of “In With The Old: Classic Decor from A to Z.”

The trending pieces aren’t necessarily the fussy, oversized armoires and armchairs from your grandma’s house, although these can be updated with new upholstery (geometric prints) or finishes (shiny lacquers).

“Some of the traditional lines are back again but it’s a simple, elegant aesthetic and not claw feet,” says Mindy Miles Greenberg, owner of an interior design firm in New York City. Not convinced? Chances are you already own some furniture with a past and don’t know it. Read on for the history of a few styles that are perfectly placed in any modern home.

Windsor chairThe Windsor chair hails from the united

Kingdom, where it was originally used as a garden chair because they were so light and easy to carry around. Eventually, the chair’s comfortable inclined back and solid, durable seat convinced people to bring it indoors and the chair became common in the pubs, libraries and schools of England. In America, it’s said Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence sitting in one.

“The same reason that these chairs were popular in the 18th century – they are light and portable – makes them useful today,” says Amy Azzarito, author of “Past & Present: 24 Favorite Moments in Decorative Arts History.”

Chaise longueNote the spelling here. This is not any pedestrian lounge chair. Instead, the chaise longue – literally long chair in French – was the perch of choice for Cleopatra and has been in use ever since.

The Romans made theirs of wood covered in animal skins and pillows and the victorians and even Modernists were fans.

“It is still the perfect piece for nearly any room of the house, from the bedroom for a little spot for napping to the living room, where it’s perfect for stretching out and reading or watching TV,” Azzarito says.

Trestle tableTrestle tables date back to the Middle

Ages. “Medieval castles didn’t have a room devoted to dining,” Azzarito says. “Instead, eating happened in the great hall or in a formal bedchamber, so it was of the upmost importance that tables could be quickly set up and then taken back down again.”

While the modern trestle tables share design elements with their ancestors, they are much more permanent.

“Of course, you could always use a board and two sawhorses for the same medieval effect,” Azzarito says. Curule stool

This stool, with its X-shaped legs, is another piece that originated with the Egyptians – it dates back to at least 494 BC – and later was adopted by the Romans. Julius Caesar sat on one and other kings and dignitaries also used it on battlefields, while driving their chariots and as a camp stool.

It also popped up on the Chinese Silk Road. “Even after thousands of years of use,

the X-stool still looks pretty fantastic in the modern home. It’s perfect at a dressing table or use two at the foot of a bed or in the entryway,” Azzarito says.

Sometimes, bigger really is better – at least when it comes to beds. A king-sized bed may just be the key to getting the royally great sleep you’ve always dreamed of.

Approximately one-third of your lifetime is spent asleep, so why would you settle for a bed that keeps you up at night, tossing and turning and disturbing your partner for hours?

A king-sized bed can help by giving couples more room. A standard full size bed (54 in x 75 in) only gives each person a few inches of personal space each. A king sized bed (76 in x 80 in.), on the other hand, gives each person the equivalent of their own twin-sized bed.

Those extra inches can make a world of difference. Not only do you not have to worry about tumbling off the edge when your

partner turns, but there are countless health benefits for anyone recovering from an injury or suffering from chronic pain. Some of the other health benefits of a king-sized bed include:• relieves stress on pressure points• allows for proper neck alignment, reducing vertebrae pressure and nerve contusions• alleviates frozen shoulder syndrome and• doesn’t compress respiratory system, making breathing easier.

This extra room also makes a king sized bed the best choice for families with young kids or pets. In a bigger bed, everyone can snuggle together for a picture-perfect lazy breakfast in bed or movie night in mom and dad’s room.In addition to the numerous health benefits,

king-sized beds are also a great way to enhance your bedroom’s overall look. An upgrade in size doesn’t mean that you have to compromise style. The bed is the star of every bedroom, so it should be a showstopper.

King-sized beds come in a variety of designs from modern and sleek to romantic canopies to classically ornate. But they all have one thing in common – they make a bold statement of luxury, comfort and style.

Even if your room isn’t the size of a royal bed chamber, a king-sized bed can still be seamlessly worked into smaller rooms. In fact, they are the ideal size for under-bed storage and many models come with built-in drawers.

So if you’re lying awake tonight, cramped and uncomfortable next to your partner, perhaps it’s time to upgrade to a bed fit a king.

Create a base layer of rock in your container. Completely cover with charcoal.

Add soil.

If your succulent is large, make a small hole in the dirt. Place the succulent and add more dirt. If you succulent is smaller, you can place it on top of the dirt and fill in more soil to secure.

Top with moss. This will help hold in moisture.

Succulents have been in the limelight lately, and for good reason. They are such a varied species you can find more colors and shapes than you can imagine. Pair that with the ease of caring for them (water lightly once a month and keep in indirect sunlight), these plants are perfect for a bit of hands-off greenery.

After recently buying our first home, I was lucky enough to get a craft room! Organization and storage is vital for any room, but a multi-purpose craft room

takes the cake. Adding shelves instantly added space to store some of my commonly-used materials. The hardest part has been trying to get a proper ratio

of decoration to storage, and the shelves are usually more cluttered than I like, but a quick cleanup is all it takes to return to some semblance of order.

These deck lights were a pipe dream until I saw them on sale this summer. I snagged a few strands and promptly grabbed everything else I needed to make them a reality. A few trial and errors later and our deck went from basic to fabulous! We love having friends over all year long, and these lights make our deck a natural place to congregate, especially when the fire is lit.

Here are a few examples from our editor.
