At Diwali, it is the goddess Lakshmi who is worshipped. Lakshmi is the goddess of
wealth and prosperity. She is worshipped at Diwali because it is the start of the New Year and Lakshmi’s
birthday. Lakshmi likes cleanliness and it is for this reason that Hindus spend a lot of time making sure their houses are
spotlessly clean at Diwali. Lakshmi visits the cleanest houses first.

Before Diwali, Hindus make sure that their house is very clean. They
do all the laundry and clean in every room. They also buy new
clothes and jewels for everyone in the household.

When the house is clean, it is decorated so that it is ready to
welcome the gods. Rangoli patterns are created on the floor to welcome Lakshmi into their home. Also, flowers and other bright decorations are used to
