At Johns Hopkins Medicine, patient safety is more than an imperative; it’s a science. And after 127 years of cumulative medical knowledge, we are honored to share with the world our rigorous efforts in quality and safety. Today, clinicians anywhere can adopt Johns Hopkins-developed checklists to help eliminate preventable harm or collaborate with us via initiatives such as the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP), which offers caregivers tools to tackle hospital-acquired infections, medication administration errors and communication breakdowns.
CUSP by the Numbers
More than 170 CUSP teams have been activated at Johns Hopkins Medicine, and hundreds more have been organized in hospitals internationally. The results are striking. With CUSP teams and checklists in 1,100 ICUs in 44 U.S. states, bloodstream infections are down by 40 percent in those hospitals, saving 500 lives and $34 million.
We now have patient safety projects in 22 countries. Here are just a few examples of what we are doing to spread our knowledge globally.
